Welcome to National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day

National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, also referred to as Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day or Pearl Harbor Day, is observed annually in the United States on December 7, to remember and honor the 2,403 citizens of the United States who were killed in the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii on December 7, 1941.

"Yesterday, December 7, 1941—a date which will live in infamy—the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan"...

Patrick Ewing: The Syracuse-Georgetown rivalry and returning to the Carrier Dome (PS; Waters)

A familiar figure will return to the Carrier Dome on Saturday.

Patrick Ewing, the man at the heart of the Syracuse-Georgetown rivalry, will make his first appearance at the Carrier Dome in over 30 years as Georgetown (7-1) faces Syracuse (6-2) on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.

The greatest player in Georgetown history, Ewing is now in his second season as the head coach at his alma mater.

Earlier this week, Ewing talked about his memories of the Carrier Dome, the rivalry with Syracuse and many other topics in a wide-ranging interview.

Hoya Destroya

Ewing lifted Georgetown to incredible heights during his college career.

In his four years at Georgetown, the Hoyas won the 1984 NCAA championship, went to three Final Fours and had a won-loss record of 121-23.

No one fared well against Georgetown, including Syracuse.

Ewing's Georgetown teams went 8-3 against Syracuse. The Hoyas were 4-0 in D.C., 2-1 in the Big East tournament and 2-2 at the Carrier Dome.

Syracuse-Georgetown: A Rivalry Restored – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Singer)

Well, well, if it ain’t the Hoyas coming to town.

Syracuse sees a familiar foe this Saturday against Georgetown as the former Big East rivals meet at the Carrier Dome.

In 93 total meetings between the two sides, the Orange holds a 50-43 advantage. However, the series is completely split over the last 12 meetings, and even belongs to the Hoyas since Syracuse left for the ACC in 2013 (2-1).

Georgetown enters at 7-1 (1-0), having only lost to Loyola Marymount. The Lions posted the worst shooting performance the Hoyas have seen all year (34.5%), yet still walked out with a victory. That’s in large part because Georgetown answered with season-lows in field goal percentage (34.7%) and three-point percentage (15.8%).

Brent opens the show talking Syracuse-Georgetown and whether the series will continue after this year with the agreement coming to an end and the ACC moving to a 20-game conference schedule. Later, he goes around the sports world in H0T Takes, including the increasing number of spring football leagues.

Sleeping with the Enemy: The Orange of Syracuse (casualhoya; Idiot)

Georgetown. Syracuse. Sleeping with the Enemy.

We’re back.

Your Fighting Hoyas of Georgetown travel to the Carrier Dome to take on the evil Syracuse Orange on Saturday, and as usual we here at THE GLOBAL PHENOMENON are bringing you everything you need to know about Georgetown’s most hated opponent. Here with us to dish on all things Orange are the guys we love to hate the most over at Troy Nunes is An Absolute Magician. For Casual answers to Syracuse Qs, click this link RIGHT HERE.

Let’s do this thing!

We hate you. No real question here, but I just wanted to make that clear before we proceed.

Feeling’s mutual. Would love to see your program caught up in the Mueller investigation somehow.

Georgetown-Syracuse! On a scale of 1-10 how excited are you?

I say this as someone that proudly watched Syracuse go 4-0 at home against Georgetown while I was at SU, and I gladly bring that up unprompted in conversations: Five, at best? We really need to move this game to February, where it used to be on the schedule. Or you guys can get respectable again. Either/or.

Orange Will Renew Big East Rivalry Against Georgetown (waer.org; Lauck)

Syracuse Orange Men’s Basketball (6-2) will host the Georgetown Hoyas (7-1) as they look to continue their four-game winning streak after a slower than expected start to the season.

When the Orange left the Big East Conference back in 2013, Georgetown was their biggest rival. The two schools agreed to play four more games against each other, one each year, after their departure. However, the historical rivalry might be coming to an end since this is the final scheduled game between these two schools since that agreement.

Since moving into the ACC, Syracuse has taken on new rivals. However, facing a former rival is always a “big game,” according to Jim Boeheim during a press conference on Tuesday.

Last time out, the Orange defeated the Northeastern Huskies by a score of 72-49. Despite a significant victory, Coach Boeheim still sees a lot of improvement for this team offensively, a trend Boeheim has been focusing on consistently this season.

Be sure to tune in to WAER for Countdown to Tipoff at 3:00 on 88.3FM.

The two leaders from last year’s Sweet Sixteen team, Tyus Battle and Frank Howard, have not been playing to their full potential this year. Battles’ points per game are a full two points lower this season than last, a trend that most likely comes from his significantly worse numbers from the free throw line. Battle remained with the Orange this year to improve his draft stock, but in order to do so, he must hit the free throws.

HoyaSaxa.com: Georgetown Basketball (hoyasaxa.com)

The 94th meeting of Georgetown and Syracuse doesn't come with the national attention which once characterized this rivalry. Tickets to the Carrier Dome are readily available on the secondary market, it's not getting any pregame hype on ESPN, and for the third straight year, neither team is nationally ranked in the Associated Press Top 25.

But it doesn't mean it's not important for both teams.

Patrick Ewing's continued use of soft scheduling positions Saturday's game as the only significant test for the 7-1 Hoyas until conference play, where six of its prior seven wins have been by 10 points or less. It's also the last significant non-conference test for the Orangemen (6-2), who have been inconsistent all season and whose home schedule to date has been unremarkable.

Just three Georgetown players were on the Carrier Dome floor when these two teams last met in Syracuse: Jessie Govan, Kaleb Johnson, and Trey Mourning. Just two (Frank Howard and Tyus Battle) were there for Syracuse. And for Patrick Ewing, it's his first appearance in the building since Jan. 29, 1985. It's a chance for a few new names to join the story.

More on the Orangemen follow at the Pre-Game Report page. A full recap follows Saturday evening.

Marcquise Reed (knee sprain) questionable for Miss St. game - ACCSports.com (accsports.com; Geisinger)

Earlier this week, in Clemson’s 65-60 win over St. Peter’s, star guard Marcquise Reed injured his knee. The injured occurred late in the game for Reed, who led Clemson with 21 points. On Wednesday, an MRI revealed that the injury is a sprain — as opposed to something far worse. According to Grace Raynor of the Post and Courier, Reed is questionable for Saturday’s matchup with Mississippi State.

Grace Raynor@gmraynor

Marcquise Reed has a sprained knee. Clemson's leading scorer is questionable for Saturday.

So far this season, Reed has been the main driver of Clemson’s offense, which ranks 45th in KenPom’s adjusted efficiency rating. With a massive usage rate of 30.8 percent (second in the ACC), Reed averages 19.4 points and 5.3 free throw attempts per game (83.3 FT%). He’s also handed out 3.4 assists per game — or 5.8 per 100 possessions.

This weekend’s matchup between Clemson and Mississippi State will take place in Newark, New Jersey; tip-off is set for 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Down Under Jack White of Duke

The ACC’s Thunder From Down Under (DBR; Jacobs)

The best ACC performer ever from Australia played basketball at Duke. Of course Kyrie Irving, the top pick in the 2011 draft, was listed as a product of West Orange, N.J., where he spent most of his youth, rather than Melbourne, Australia.

Similarly, Brooklyn-born Michael Jordan will forever be known as coming from Wilmington, N.C.

It’s doubtful Irving will be overshadowed by any of his countrymen currently in the ACC. Only a few of them start; they are not exactly stars. One, Jack White, plays for Duke.

The conference also has several players from New Zealand, an island nation across the Tasman Sea from the island continent of Australia. New Zealand is about the size of Oregon, twice as big as North Carolina, and 1/29th the size of Australia.

Combined, Australia and New Zealand are exceeded only by Canada in supplying ACC men’s players this season. That more or less minimizes problems with a language barrier.

North Carolina basketball: Tar Heels still have much to fix before showdown with No. 1 Gonzaga | NCAA.com (ncaa.com; Alexander)

As North Carolina's Kenny Williams was interviewed by reporters late Wednesday night, a flat screen television a few feet to the right of him showed No. 1 Gonzaga live in its game against Washington.

The game, which was being shown on the big screen, signified what's looming.

On Dec. 15, No. 14 UNC will play Gonzaga (9-0) for the first time since it beat the Bulldogs in the 2017 NCAA Division I national championship game, 71-65.

When the two teams played then, the Tar Heels were the favorite. But this season, the Tar Heels (7-2) will likely enter as underdogs.

Why is county rushing to build Onondaga Lake trail on toxic land, critics ask (PS; Coin)

Onondaga County plans to build a 1-mile bike trail next summer on contaminated land near Destiny USA, even though the state and critics say construction shouldn't start until a final cleanup plan is in place.

The county's environment director says the trail on the west shore of Onondaga Lake was also built before the site's cleanup plan was done, and he doesn't anticipate any problems with building the new trail on Murphy's Island.

Critics of the Murphy's Island plan say the county should wait until the state Department of Environmental Conservation selects the final cleanup, or remediation, plan. The DEC is waiting for a feasibility study from Honeywell before deciding on the cleanup. That study is expected to be done next year.

"We don't understand the rush when the remediation plan is being developed," said Alma Lowry, the environmental attorney for the Onondaga Nation, which opposes construction of the trail. "The nation believes there is no reason to go forward with the trail that will lead nowhere but the middle of a vacant site."

Are Andy Katz and Joe Giglio related?

He has Buffalo a 5 seed in Hartford. Pretty sweet treatment for a team not in the top 16. I hope we get similar treatment if we end up around #20 in the country at the end of the year.

The Georgetown and Buffalo games are going to be really important ones. It is good to have meaningful games to play in December in the Dome.

I read on this board that we didn't have any meaningful OOC games other than Ohio State. Must be some games that someone snuck into the schedule.
