Welcome to Bugs Bunny Day!

On April 30, 1938, a cartoon character known as "Happy Rabbit" made his debut in a short Warner Bros. cartoon titled "Porky's Hare Hunt." He was the prototype for Bugs Bunny, having a similar personality, but looking a bit different. It is on the anniversary of the release of this short film that we celebrate Bugs Bunny Day.

Bugs Bunny is an anthropomorphic gray hare with a relaxed and passive personality—but he is also a trickster. He became a cultural icon and is best known for starring in Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies, short films that were made by Warner Bros. from the 1930s through the 1960s.

Syracuse Basketball: Joseph Girard III wins MVP honors at Capital Classic (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball commit Joseph Girard III put forth a terrific showing at the Capital Classic all-star affair this past weekend.

Two of Syracuse basketball’s 2019 class members, Joseph Girard III, and Brycen Goodine, participated in the 46th-annual Capital Classic high-school game on Saturday afternoon at Woodrow Wilson High School in Washington, D.C.

Girard and Goodine, a pair of combo guards who will suit up for SU beginning this fall, competed for the U.S. all-stars, who got crushed by the Capital all-stars, 122-83, according to various media reports, as the event didn’t get televised, at least as far as I can tell.

Girard, who tallied 17 points on 5-of-11 shooting from beyond the arc, as well as four assists and three rebounds, captured the MVP for the U.S. all-stars, per a tweet from Capitol Hoops, which provides prep-basketball news and highlights throughout the D.C. metropolitan region. Goodine, meanwhile, collected five points on 2-of-8 from the field, along with one dime and one board.

Comings And Goings In The ACC (DBR; King)

Players keep moving in and out of the conference so here are a few updates:

Here is a piece on Virginia’s recently signed Justin McKoy of Cary. Also still possible for the ‘Hoos: a reclassified Johnny Juzang and the Hauser brothers, who recently bailed on Steve Wojciechowski’s Marquette.

UNC got a transfer in when Charleston Southern’s Christian Keeling committed to the Heels this weekend.A 6-4 guard he’s solid offensively and is immediately eligible as a grad transfer. William and Mary grad transfer Justin Pierce was also in on an official visit Sunday.

Tennessee has now entered the race for Virginia Tech’s Kerry Blackshear and is considered a possible dark horse.
This is a bit older news but Florida’s Keith Stone has transferred home to Miami for his final year. He’ll be immediately eligible.

Syracuse-bound Joe Girard won the Capital Classic MVP.

Get to know a player: What UNC adds with grad transfer Christian Keeling - ACCSports.com (accsports, com; Geisinger)

Late on Friday night, North Carolina capped a busy recruiting week with the commitment of Charleston Southern graduate transfer Christian Keeling. Days after landing 5-star guard Cole Anthony and 4-star wing Anthony Harris, Keeling pledged to the Heels, too, above a trio of ACC rivals.

With the departures of Coby White, Kenny Williams and Seventh Woods, UNC has a good bit of turnover in its backcourt. Over the course of seven days, though, Roy Williams and North Carolina landed several key additions.

Anthony, who projects as a top-10 NBA Draft pick, will be the primary ball handler in North Carolina’s go-go offense. Harris is a top-70 prospect in the 2019 class; previously a Virginia Tech commit, one can usually expect solid two-way production out of wings that Buzz Williams targets.

However, it will also be helpful to add a guard that’s logged nearly 100 games of college basketball experience to his credit. With over 3,000 minutes at the collegiate level to his name, this is exactly what Christian Keeling brings to the table in Chapel Hill.

Before we hit the offseason, let’s learn a little bit more about the newest addition to North Carolina’s roster.

Quick Stats: Scoring First
During his three-year career in the Big South Conference, Keeling emerged as a prolific scorer. In 93 career games, Keeling scored over 1,600 points; as a junior in the 2018-19 season, the 6-foot-4 combo guard scored 18.7 points per game (56.2 eFG%) with a 26.6 percent usage rate.

Darien Lake’s new ride, the tallest in New York State, is almost finished (video) (PS; TNS)

Construction on Six Flags Darien Lake’s newest ride, the SkySkreamer, is almost finished. It should be open by the middle of next month, soon after the park opens for the season May 4.

The SkySkreamer is basically the spinning chair-swing ride you've seen at every carnival -- but dramatically bigger and taller. At 24 stories high, it will be the tallest ride in New York State.

The ride will fit 32 riders at a time in open-air swings, each sitting two to a swing. At the widest rotation, riders will spin in a 98-foot circle at 35 miles per hour. Riders are strapped in with a seat belt.

Compared to Darien Lake’s latest ride, the 52-mile-per-hour Tantrum roller coaster that has a 97-degree vertical drop, the SkySkreamer is a throwback to some of the earliest amusement park rides in the country. The first swing ride, the Flying Swing, appeared at a theme park in Oakland, Calif., in 1908.

Marineland Canada in Niagara Falls, Ont., has something called a Sky Skreamer, but it's a different ride altogether. It has towers that shoot riders vertically up and down at high rates of speed.

There are SkySkreamers like the one at Darien Lake at other Six Flags parks in Georgia, California, New Jersey, Missouri and Texas.

In June, a SkySkreamer at Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey stranded riders in the air for 15 minutes. Safety sensors on the ride detected an error, triggering the ride's emergency stop system. The ride, which was full at the time, eventually returned to the ground, allowing everyone to exit safely.
