Welcome to "The Stars and Stripes Forever" Day!

Today's holiday takes place on the anniversary of the first public performance of "The Stars and Stripes Forever," and is thus dedicated to the march. The march was first performed on May 14, 1897, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on the occasion of the unveiling of a statue of George Washington. President William McKinley was even in attendance.

John Philip Sousa had been the director of the United States Marine Band from 1880 to 1892. The most popular musical star of his era, Sousa was known as the "March King" by the 1890s, and started his own band and toured the country after leaving the Marine band. But at this time, he had yet to write what would become his most well-known piece.

Syracuse Basketball Recruiting Final 2019 Rankings – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Leonard)

Rankings are now essentially final for the Syracuse basketball 2019 recruiting class. The latest list has the Orange falling from 27 to the 30th best recruiting class in the nation, according to 247sports.com. That puts SU sixth among ACC teams.

This deep class of five players has plenty of unknown about them. The biggest mover in the latest 247sports rankings was the latest addition, center Jesse Edwards, he skyrocketed to the third highest rated player in the class.

Everyone looks good in their highlight tapes (never show the misses), but each time I see Jesse Edwards I become more intrigued. https://t.co/fkE9LXuScs

— Mike Waters (@MikeWatersSYR) May 7, 2019

Final Player Rankings *247 Sports*

Brycen Goodine SG – #91 Grade: 96.12
Quincy Guerrier SF – #115 Grade: 93.68
Jesse Edwards C – #170 Grade: 90.33
Joe Girard G – #188 Grade: 89.52
John Bol Ajak C – #452 Grade: 85.35

That climb from Edwards is very positive. As of his commitment back in early April, he wasn’t ranked on 247sports (mostly because he just came on the scene late and was unknown). Now that he’s known though, he’s jumped all the way into the 90’s grade wise. Obviously, the Netherlands center is still a bit of a project at this point. Not saying 170 is anything remarkable, but you’d think it would warrant minutes next year and given development (a big if with SU centers of late) potentially some starter minutes as an upperclassmen.

Syracuse Basketball: Tyus Battle makes an impact at G-League Elite Camp (itlh; Esden Jr)

Former Syracuse basketball star Tyus Battle made an immediate impact at the G-League Elite Camp. Here are all the details and what’s next.

The former Syracuse basketball star Tyus Battle sure knows how to make an impact. He did it throughout his entire SU career and he continued that at the NBA G-League Elite Camp.

While he wasn’t invited to the NBA Combine in 2019, he didn’t let that deter his positive attitude. Battle signed with Roc Nation Sports (a company owned and operated by Jay Z).

The camp runs from May 12th through the 14th at Quest Multisport in Chicago.

Here’s Tyus Battle showing off his vertical, explosiveness, and athleticism in the Windy City (video courtesy of the official NBA G-League account):

Syracuse Basketball: Oshae Brissett impressing at G-League Elite Camp (itlh; Esden Jr)

Former Syracuse basketball standout Oshae Brissett has really impressed at the G-League Elite Camp. Here is what the experts are saying.

We still don’t know if Oshae Brissett is going to return to the Syracuse basketball squad next season.

Although if we were doing updated educated guesses right now, it doesn’t look good.

Currently, Brissett is participating in the G-League Elite Camp. It’s the first year the camp is allowing collegiate athletes to participate and strut their stuff in front of all 30 NBA teams.

ACC Daily Digest, May 13: Manning adds assistant to staff at Wake, Derryck Thornton to visit BC - ACCSports.com (accsports.com; Geisinger)

Danny Manning adds Rex Walters to coach staff at Wake Forest

Wake Forest Basketball has announced the hiring of Rex Walters, who will join Danny Manning’s staff as an associate head coach. Most recently, Walters spent the 2018-19 season as Special Assistant to the Head Coach at Nevada: Eric Musselman.

Prior to that, though, Walters spent two seasons in professional basketball: Grand Rapids Drive (G League, 2016-17) and the Detroit Pistons (2017-18) as an assistant for Stan Van Gundy. Walters also has 10 seasons of head coaching experience on the collegiate level, too: Florida Atlantic (2006-08) and San Francisco (2008-16).

His 2013-14 team at San Francisco won 21 games and ranked 51st nationally in adjusted offensive efficiency, per KenPom.

After his college playing days were over, Walters played in the NBA for most of the 1990s: 1,547 career points in 335 games.

Insider Report - The Clemson Insider Forums (theclemsoninsider.com; Vandervort)

for gbo

It is time for this week’s edition of The Insider Report.

We hope everyone had a great weekend and a great Mother's Day.

ACC Network is all the talk at spring meetings

The Clemson Insider is in Amelia Island, Florida this week covering the ACC Spring Meetings from the Ritz-Carlton.

Of course, the big talk this week centers around the launch of the ACC Network which is set to begin in August. ESPN has a big presence here this week as they have flown in all of the big wigs at the network as well as some of the television personalities you will see on the ACC Network this coming fall.

We spoke with former Clemson offensive lineman Eric Mac Lain on Monday. He is excited to start his new job as in-studio analyst for the network. The network will fly Mac Lain up to Bristol from Charlotte every Thursday for his studio work and then back home on Sundays.

Clemson women’s basketball coach Amanda Butler says the women’s head coaches are excited about the new network because it gives them even more exposure than they ever had. She says its going to help with recruiting and will give her sport and conference even more exposure.

As for Clemson’s participation in the network, the athletic department has put in a lot of money and time to make sure Clemson is a full partner and can do all the broadcast needs that are associated with the ACC Network.

A number of sports and their broadcasts will come right out of the Jervey Athletic Center.

“We are in a great position from an equipment perspective and from a technical perspective,” Clemson athletic director Dan Radakovich said. “We are ready to go and just feed that into the ACC Network.”

ACC is still trying to sell the network

ESPN’s ACC Network has already landed with DirecTV, Hulu and PlayStation Vue as cable and media stream servers to watch its network, but the network still has not landed with some of the big cable providers such as Charter, Comcast and Spectrum.

The league is hoping to be on those cable providers’ programming by August, but right now they are not. The ACC Network is scheduled to launch on Aug. 19. The Georgia Tech at Clemson game will be the first live event on the network on Aug. 29 to kick off the season.

For the record Comcast is the cable provider for the city of Clemson.

Which ACC School Is Pursuing A Former Hokie? (DBR; King)

Remember Khadim Sy? He was at Virginia Tech and left twice (he came back after the first departure).

Now he’s apparently much improved and has become a significant JUCO target.

Among his pursuers?

Pitt’s Jeff Capel. The former Duke assistant needs front court help. That would be an interesting and unique path for anyone.

Also in pursuit: Ole Miss and ECU. Pitt seems like a much more desirable location.

Meteorologist Molly Matott leaving TV to ‘chase a new dream’ (PS; Coin)

Meteorologist Molly Matott, a Liverpool High School and SUNY Oswego grad who joined CNY Central four years ago, announced today she’s leaving not just the station, but the television business.

“I’ve been living out my dream giving out forecasts in my hometown for the past four years, but now it’s time for me to chase a new dream,” Matott said this morning on air. “I won’t just be leaving our station, but I’ll be leaving the TV business in general to pursue something I have always loved: teaching.”

She said she’ll leave the station at the end of May.

Matott said she’s been attending graduate school for a year, and plans to become a math teacher once she receives her certification.

“It’s something I’ve always wanted to do,” she said. "I love educating young people about STEM fields, and igniting passion for math and science."

Matott graduated from Liverpool High in 2011. She earned her meteorology degree in 2015 at Oswego, where she was the chief meteorologist for the college’s TV station. She was hired by CNY Central a month before graduation, and commuted from Oswego to Syracuse on weekends, according to CNY Central’s website.

Stars and Stripes Forever ... as played by the Boston Pops.
1.) The piccolo solo is the best part of the composition
2.) Many years ago, 60 Minutes did a profile on the great Vladimir Horowitz, during which he confirmed that he thoroughly disliked the song and refused to play it even when called upon to do so at one of his pops concerts. Why? He said that the tempo at which it was written to be performed was much too rapid for what it was--a march. He then turned to his piano, and demonstrated, in about 4 bars, the right way and the wrong way to play the piece.
