Welcome to Loomis Day!
Mahlon Loomis thought of what seemed impossible and gave people an idea to see things as they not yet were. His idea: wireless communication. This is something we take for granted now—whether talking or texting on a cell phone, using a laptop to surf the web, watching television, or listening to the radio, we use wireless communication on a daily basis. Loomis's application of wireless communication was to make a telegraph that didn't need wires. Instead of wires, he wished to harness the electrical currents of the earth's upper atmosphere.
When experimenting, he flew two kites fourteen miles apart, tied them each to a copper string, and tied each string to a galvanometer. During his experiment, he was able to move one kite's meter with the other kite and thought he had created a closed circuit using the atmosphere. However, this was not the case. Instead, it is likely that he created a radio signal, where the wire on one kite acted as a receiver of the signal. Nonetheless, he had been able to discover some form of wireless communication.

Syracuse Basketball: Leo Rautins’ Legacy on the Court, and in the Booth (itlh; Weisleder)
Most Americans know Leo Rautins for his early 80s exploits with Syracuse Basketball. Most Canadian’s eulogize him for his broadcasting exploits in Toronto.
The NBA Finals tip off on Thursday night, and the Golden State Warriors are in all but too familiar territory. However, their counterpart Toronto is playing for the Larry O’Brien Trophy for the first time in its’ 24-year history.
Syracuse basketball legend Leo Rautins, a member of Toronto’s broadcasting team since its’ 1995 inception, will continue to glorify Canada basketball and represent his alma mater Syracuse while calling games starting May 30th in Scotiabank Arena.
Rautins’ Canadian roots and basketball experience across the border compliments on-air color commentator Matt Devlin, who has been working alongside him since 2008. Devlin, a Syracuse native, has been covering the Raptors night in and night out for the last 11 years alongside Rautins and Jack Armstrong.
Rautins’ Rise to Basketball Relevancy in America:
At the tender age of 16, Rautins was the face of Toronto’s high school basketball scene after being named the youngest Canadian ever to join their senior national team, a position he would end up playing on for 15 years.
After garnering serious international attention, Rautins committed to Minnesota, where his eight points, four rebounds, and four assists a night landed him on the Big Ten’s All-Rookie Team in 1979.
Following the strong freshman season, Rautins left Minnesota for Syracuse and then already 10-year head coach Jim Boeheim.

Syracuse basketball needs a big win on the recruiting trail - The Juice Online (the juice; Irvine)
On Tuesday the Syracuse men’s basketball team received its first commitment of the 2020 class from Lanham, Md., forward Woody Newton.
Ranked the 79th best player in his class by 247Sports, Newton is a nice addition. But to call this recruiting cycle a success and break out of a 5-year recruiting decline, Syracuse will need to land top priority Andre Jackson.
Jackson, a local recruit from Albany, is the 38th ranked recruit, according to 247Sports, but his importance goes beyond his ranking and unparalleled athleticism.
Syracuse has not had a consensus top-40 recruit since Tyus Battle committed in the 2016 class. That three-year drought is the longest that SU has experienced since recruiting services started publishing rankings online in 1998.
In fact, the three-year running average of SU’s top recruit, based on the consensus RSCI rankings, has declined from 20th in 2014 to 77th in 2019.
Yes, that is partially caused by some recruiting services not ranking Canadian recruits like Oshae Brissett and incoming freshman Quincy Guerrier. But the decline in recruiting can be seen across the depth of SU’s classes recently.
I examined this by ordering the recruits in each SU class by their high school composite ranking. I then calculated the three-year running average of the ranking for each position in each class. For example, the top position in recent years would include Tyus Battle, Oshae Brissett, and Jalen Carey, while the number two slot would go Matt Moyer, Marek Dolezaj and Robert Braswell.
As shown in the chart below, the average ranking of SU’s first, second, third and forth recruits have all declined in each year since 2016.

Watch- Ryan Blackwell live in studio talking Boeheim's Army, who will join next? (cnycentral.com; Tamurian)
Boeheim's Army Basketball is joining The Basketball Tournament again in 2019, ready to get back to the Final Four.
It features a team full of former Syracuse Orange stars taking part in the massive summer tournament with $2 million on the line.
Already, the team led by General Manager Kevin Belbey and Head Coach Ryan Blackwell is adding new firepower in former Syracuse players Chris McCullough and Michael Gbinije, with Blackwell teasing more players.
"Maybe Andrew White?" "Maybe Carmelo?" Blackwell said live in CBS 5 Studios on Wednesday night.
That's just it with "TBT", you never know which exciting player will join next.
Shout out to @boeheimsarmy can’t wait till play with y’all this summer
A post shared by Michael Gbinije (@mikegbinije) on May 29, 2019 at 11:58am PDT
The newcomers join a fantastic core group of players featuring Eric Devendorf, John Gillon III and Brandon Triche with a special twist this year:
They're hosting the first weekend.
The Basketball Tournament tips off July 26-28 at SRC Arena on the campus of Onondaga Community College with Boeheim's Army playing as the host, hoping to make the quarterfinals in Chicago the first week of August.
Syracuse Basketball: Boeheim’s Army adds 3 stalwarts to the 2019 roster (itlh; Esden Jr)
Boeheim’s Army has added three former Syracuse basketball stars to their 2019 roster. Here are all the details on some familiar faces joining the fray.
After adding a first timer in Chris McCullough on Tuesday afternoon, Boeheim’s Army decided to go back to some tried and true members for their TBT roster.
On Wednesday the team revealed that three former Syracuse basketball members are rejoining the efforts to chase the 2019 TBT crown:
Eric Devendorf
Eric is the only player that has been on every version of the Boeheim’s Army squad since its’ inception back in 2015.
Eric was an assistant strength and conditioning coach at his alma mater prior to leaving the University last year to pursue a coaching gig with the Detroit Mercy.
Brandon Triche
After having a career renaissance in Italy this past year, Brandon isn’t forgetting about the little people back in the states that jump-started his Orange career. He’s been on the roster for four out of the five years.
Triche revealed that a big reason he’s coming back to Boeheim’s Army this season is to play in front of the Syracuse faithful. For the first time in TBT history, Syracuse will be one of the hosting cities for the regional in late July.
Ryan Blackwell
Not only is Ryan a Syracuse alum, but he has stayed locally long after his playing days. He’s the Liverpool high school men’s basketball coach and he will continue in his role leading Boeheim’s Army as their coach.

Louisville basketball: Jordan Nwora will return for Junior season (bigerdlouie; Meyer)
After a long-awaited decision, Louisville basketball’s Jordan Nwora will return for his Junior year.
Let the hype begin. Jordan Nwora is coming back for Louisville basketball.
After two months filled with storylines and media speculating his every move, Jordan Nwora has opted to remove his name from the NBA draft and return to college for one more year as a Louisville Cardinal.
On March 28th, it came as a surprise to no one when Nwora declared for the NBA draft. In April, he was invited as one of the few to be invited to the NBA combine. Two weeks later, he hired an agent. At that point, many on the fence about whether he would stay or leave speculated that this move indicated that Nwora was inclined to remain in the draft and turn pro.
However, as the draft proceedings wore on, Nwora’s chances of becoming a first-round pick dwindled. To start, Nwora had some tough competition. Players like Cam Johnson from North Carolina, Iggy Brazdeikis of Michigan, and Tennessee’s Grant Wiliams were in similar positions to Nwora. Then came news that Nwora wasn’t going to participate in many of the combine drills and activities. It was later announced that Nwora was sitting out of the 5-on-5 portion of the combine workouts due to a leg injury.

Kerry Blackshear withdraws from NBA Draft, still considering Virginia Tech (roanoke.com; Berman)
Virginia Tech standout Kerry Blackshear Jr. announced on Instagram on Wednesday night that he has decided to withdraw from the NBA Draft but is still mulling where to play college basketball next season.
Is Virginia Tech still an option for him?
"Yes sir," he said Wednesday night in a text message to The Roanoke Times.
He made the announcement about withdrawing from the draft less than three hours before the midnight deadline for players to decide whether to stay in the June 20 draft or withdraw and return to college basketball next season.
The star post player had announced on April 16 that he had both entered the transfer portal and entered his name for the NBA draft.
Blackshear, who made the All-ACC second team as a fourth-year junior, has graduated from Tech. So he could join a new school as a graduate transfer and play in the 2019-20 season without having to sit out the year.

UNC Basketball: Tar Heels target named a standout at EYBL Dallas (keepingitheel.com; Pearson)
The UNC Basketball program is in the mix for one of the top players in the 2020 recruiting class and he’s really taking his game to a whole new level
Five-star small forward Cade Cunningham has become a big target for the North Carolina Tar Heels in the 2020 class. But they aren’t the only ones.
Cunningham is ranked as the No. 7 overall prospect in the 247 Sports recruiting rankings and has really elevated his game of late. The Montverde Academy product has a total of 9 offers so far with the Tar Heels reportedly being one of the teams that has recently put out an offer per Evan Daniels of 247 Sports.
That could change soon especially after how well Cunningham has been playing of late.
His most recent performance is being recognized by recruiting analysts and he’s been called a standout on the most recent stop for the EYBL AAU circuit in Dallas. Cunningham participated in the event over the weekend and did enough to impress Daniels.
In his Top & Breakout Performers article for the Dallas EYBL session, Daniels listed Cunningham as one of the standouts, praising his game and calling him the most impressive prospect at the event:

With Javin DeLaurier back, a look at Duke's depth in 2019-20 - ACCSports.com (accsports.com; Geisinger)
Jack White was already set to be back at Duke for his senior season; however, both of Duke’s captains from the 2018-19 season will return for the Blue Devils. It was announced that Javin DeLaurier, after going through the NBA Draft process, has decided to come back for his senior year.
DeLaurier also participated in the pre-draft G League Elite Camp.
Javin DeLaurier WILL RETURN to Duke next season. No surprise, but will be great to have back to provide front court experience.
(via @GoodmanHoops)
— #DukeNation (@TheDukeNation) May 28, 2019
As a junior, DeLaurier played in all 38 games for Duke — making 16 starts, while sharing the center position with Marques Bolden. DeLaurier averaged 3.8 points (74.7 eFG%), 4.4 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game this season.
On offense, he plays a simple but effective role: screen hard, dive to the rim and hit the glass (11.2 percent offensive rebound rate). He finished the season with 28 dunks, having shot 79 percent at the rim.
With Bolden’s decision to head pro, this means Duke brings back one half of its center platoon from the 2018-19 season. DeLaurier has a real chance to have an impact defensively for a unit that should be headlined by Tre Jones.

Two ACC 2020 Pickups (DBR; King)
Two 2020 ACC additions on Tuesday as Syracuse picks up Woody Newton, a 6-8 4-star forward out of Maryland. He’s a Top 100 recruit but closer to the bottom than the top.
And Virginia got a commitment from former Marquette star Sam Hauser. A 6-8 forward, Hauser is an outstanding shooter who will add range to Tony Bennett’s squad.
He’ll have just one year left but could be a real key for the ‘Hoos.
