Welcome to World UFO Day!

World UFO Day is dedicated to the existence of unidentified flying objects. First celebrated in 2001, it was created by the World UFO Day Organization. The day is often celebrated on June 24 and July 2, although The World UFO Day Organization declared July 2 to be the official day. June 24 marks the anniversary of one of the first UFO sightings in the United States, when Kenneth Arnold reported seeing nine high-speed crescent-shaped objects near Mt. Rainier in Washington, in 1947. July 2 marks the anniversary of the Roswell UFO incident, which also happened in 1947.
The creators of the day claim the day exists to "raise awareness about the undoubted existence of UFO's and with that intelligent beings from outer space" and that the day exists to "encourage governments to unclassify their knowledge about sightings throughout the history"—as they believe that the US government has exclusive information about UFOs. The creators also said, "the most important thing is that people collectively open their minds to the subject for one day and send out the message mentally that UFOs are welcome on this earth." On a less serious note, the day is for talking with friends about UFOs, watching movies about UFOs, attending conferences about UFOs, having parties with UFO themes, and gazing up into the sky and looking for UFOs.

Malachi Richardson doesn’t play in Golden State’s first NBA Summer League game (PS; Carlson)

Malachi Richardson probably needs to show the NBA something in order to earn a fourth season in the league. He didn’t get much a chance on Monday night, when he suited up for his first 2019 NBA Summer League game with the Golden State Warriors.

Richardson, who is a free agent, did not play as Golden State lost 81-77 to Sacramento, his old team. Richardson found himself behind a number of Golden State guards in the opener. The Warriors drafted Michigan shooting guard Jordan Poole in the 2019 draft and Cincinnati guard Jacob Evans in the 2018 draft and, as you’d expect, gave substantial playing time to both.

Other guards that saw time ahead of Richardson on Monday night for Golden State included Jimmer Fredette (BYU), Ky Bowman (Boston College), Davon Reed (Miami) and Brandon Sampson (LSU). Evans (18 points) and Fredette (14 points) led Golden State.

The night’s most impressive player was Sacramento’s Wenyen Gabriel who went undrafted out of Kentucky in 2018 before signing a two-way contract with the Kings. He finished with 22 points and 12 rebounds.
Receiving no playing time in the opener certainly isn’t an inspiring start for Richardson but the Warriors do have a busy Summer League schedule ahead, which increase the chances he will receive an NBA audition at some point. Golden State is competing in NBA Summer League sessions in both Sacramento and Las Vegas. Golden State will play against the L.A. Lakers on Tuesday at 9 p.m.

Richardson, 23, left Syracuse after his freshman year in 2016 after helping the Orange reach the Final Four. He averaged 15.6 points, elevating his profile with exceptional play during the NCAA Tournament. He was picked in the first round by Sacramento but has struggled to find consistent playing time in three NBA seasons, first with bad Sacramento teams and then with the NBA champion Toronto Raptors. He has made 4.5 million in salary in those three NBA seasons.

A handful of former Syracuse basketball stars will begin competing this week in the NBA’s Summer League. Let’s take a look.

The Syracuse basketball squad won’t commence its 2019-20 term for a few months, although it will suit up for several games in Italy next month. Boeheim’s Army is back in The Basketball Tournament, which kicks off in late July.
For now, though, if you’re looking for some hoops action with ties to the ‘Cuse basketball unit, the NBA’s Summer League started on Monday evening, per Syracuse.com’s Donna Ditota, and continues on throughout this Fourth of July holiday week.

According to Ditota’s article, among those scheduled for contests is Malachi Richardson, who helped lead the Orange on a magical run to the Final Four, as a No. 10 seed, in 2016. Richardson is on the Golden State Warriors’ Summer League crew. Tyus Battle, who recently departed the Hill after his junior campaign, is with the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Oshae Brissett, who somewhat surprisingly elected to leave SU after his sophomore year, will seek to impress NBA brass as a member of the Los Angeles Clippers’ Summer League outfit.
Separately, Syracuse native Tyler Cavanaugh is with the New York Knicks, a struggling pro team that has struck out so far in NBA free agency. Matt Morgan, a scoring machine during his career at Central New York neighbor Cornell, is with the Toronto Raptors. You may recall that Toronto claimed the NBA championship a few weeks ago, upsetting the injury-depleted Warriors in six duels.

Former Syracuse basketball player Michael Carter-Williams turned a small opportunity into a total career revival. Here are all the details.

Michael Carter-Williams received a 10-day contract from the Orlando Magic last season with no promises.
The former Syracuse basketball star turned that small opportunity into a complete career renaissance.

Being a first-round draft pick buys you time. If an NBA team is willing to invest that kind of capital into you, they believe you can become a key cog on their team.
MCW rewarded the Philadelphia 76ers with a Rookie of the Year campaign. Little did he know at that moment it would all go downhill from a statistical perspective.

Michael Carter-Williams never got close to that 16.7 points per game he averaged in the city of brotherly love. With the drop off in play and the mounting injuries, MCW would become a journeyman of sorts playing for seven different NBA teams over the next seven years.
When it appeared that his car was running out of gas, he got one last opportunity with the Orlando Magic on a 10-day contract.

NCAA Basketball Recruiting: 6 ACC teams pursuing 2020 F Lance Ware (bustingbrackets.com; Benjamin)

Top-55 NCAA Basketball class of 2020 recruit Lance Ware had a strong showing at Philly Live II this weekend.

Four-star power forward Lance Ware showed his new coach at Camden (NJ) High School, former NBA point guard Rick Brunson what to exactly expect from him this upcoming season as he produced a double-double (16 points and 17 caroms) in a loss to Archbishop Wood at Philly Live II hosted by Jefferson University on June 28. Several NCAA Basketball coaches including DePaul’s Dave Leitao, Miami’s Jim Larranaga, North Carolina’s Roy Williams, and Villanova’s Jay Wright were in attendance to watch Ware perform.
The consensus top-55 2020 prospect was a dominant presence last year for Camden, averaging 11.1 points along with 10 rebounds, 2.3 blocks, and 1.9 steals. But Brunson, who was hired on June 5, expects more from him, the 6-9 Burlington (NJ) native told Rich Flanigan of ZAGSBLOG recently.

“He expects a lot out of me. I want to give him what he wants and what he expects of me, which is to play hard, rebound and block shots so that’s what I’m trying to do.”
Ware is ranked as the 43rd best prospect by 247Sports Composite and 41st best prospect in the nation. He is ranked 48th nationally by ESPN and 52nd by Rivals.

“Lance has turned himself into an energized player,” Brunson said. “He’s a rim-runner as well as a shot-blocker and rim protector. The best thing he does is be a high character player and a leader.”
Ware is expected to whittle his list down soon. He currently holds 15 offers with six of them coming from ACC programs — Pitt, Clemson, Miami, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, and Wake Forest. Rivals’ Eric Bossi reported that he is also a target of UNC and while the Tar Heels have yet to offer him a scholarship, one is expected to come.

What’s Eating Paul Finebaum? (DBR; King)

For some reason, SEC propagandist Paul Finebaum is really getting bent out of shape about ACC football.

It’s kind of hard to understand honestly. Whatever else you can say about the Situational Ethics Conference, it has great football. Almost anyone would agree that it is, year in and year out, better than the ACC.

They get that and we get the sport of the 21st Century. It’s all good.

But Finebaum seems to be on a real jihad lately, ripping the ACC twice just this week, basically over what he perceives as competitive weakness.

Here’s the question though: assuming he believes the SEC is vastly superior, as he seems to, then why is he so worked up about this?

We have a theory.

He’s a bit freaked out about the ACC Network.

The ACC’s footprint overlaps with the SEC’s of course, but the ACC’s is much bigger and the networks are going to compete to an extent, particularly in South Carolina, Georgia and Florida.

That said, SEC football is better for now and for the foreseeable future.

The other thing that is clearly getting to Finebaum?

Clemson’s success.

Kevin Keatts reflects on 2019 tournament snub, looks ahead to 2020 on Aaron Torres’ podcast (backingthepack.com; Muma)

Kevin Keatts recorded a podcast with Fox Sports Radio’s Aaron Torres last week and they hit on some familiar topics, including, of course, NC State’s snubbing at the hands of the NCAA tournament selection committee. Keatts’ interview begins at the 27:15 mark at this here link.

If you don’t feel like re-hashing that discussion from March, I don’t blame you, but Keatts is pretty candid about the circumstances of last season. Among other things, he said he thought NC State not have received proper credit for beating Auburn because the committee may already have had the brackets set by the time the Tigers won the SEC tournament. Which is, ehhhh, I don’t know about that one.

Keatts also spent some time talking about the year ahead, and his shoe game, and what he thought about Jalen Lecque’s decision to stay in the NBA Draft.
