Welcome Free Slurpee Day!

July 11 (7/11) is the unofficial birthday of the 7-Eleven store and is known as Free Slurpee Day or 7-Eleven Day. Customers who stop in a store from 7 am to 11 pm can receive a free small Slurpee. Free Slurpee Day was started in 2002, and a new flavor is featured each year on the day, although customers can choose from whatever other flavors are available at the store as well. Other food items have recently been given away on Free Slurpee Day as well, such as Big Gulps, Twinkies, and cookies.

Oh thank heaven once again for July 11. 7-Eleven is giving free Slurpees to all. However, you can actually get two free ones this year.

To claim your first free Slurpee, just walk into any 7-Eleven store, grab a small Slurpee cup, fill it up and enjoy while supplies last from 11:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 11, 2019.

To get a second free Slurpee, other than driving to another location on the same day, simply scan your 7-Eleven loyalty app or card or enter your phone number when you get your free small Slurpee and you’ll receive a coupon in your account for a free any-size Slurpee which you can redeem anytime between July 12 and August 12, 2019.

SU News

https://www.syracuse.com/orangebasketball/2019/07/is-syracuse-first-school-to-open-at-home-against-defending-champs-in-football-and-basketball.html (PS; Waters)

The question seemed obvious. The answer wasn’t.

Syracuse University’s football team will start the 2019 season with road games at Liberty and Maryland before playing its first home game on Sept. 14 against defending national champion Clemson.

Meanwhile, the SU men’s basketball team opens the 2019-20 season at home against defending national champion Virginia. The Orange will host its ACC rival on Nov. 6 at the Carrier Dome.

Two home openers. Two national champions.

Which elicited the obvious question: Had that ever happened before? Had a school opened its regular season against the defending national champions in both football and basketball in the same year?

Or was Syracuse about to experience a first?

Syracuse’s twin home openers against the defending national champs had only come about because of the ACC’s change to a 20-game basketball schedule. The addition of two more conference games forced ACC schools to schedule league games early in the season, including seven season-opening match-ups.

Syracuse drew the defending national champion Virginia Cavaliers for its 2019-20 season-opener.

A message to the NCAA’s offices in Indianapolis yielded the email equivalent of a shrug. Officials there didn’t know. Records aren’t kept for that sort of oddity and nothing immediately came to mind.

The NCAA on Tuesday officially put North Carolina State University on notice about alleged recruiting violations committed within the men's basketball program during the tenure of Mark Gottfried. It also suggested that both Gottfried and his then-assistant Orlando Early could be punished with a "show-cause" penalty, which could impact their current and future employability.

Gottfried, who left NC State in 2017 after five seasons with a 123-86 record, was hired at Cal State Northridge in 2018.

The university made the Notice of Allegations public Wednesday afternoon. “NC State is committed to the highest levels of compliance, honesty and integrity,” said Chancellor Randy Woodson.

Gottfried and then-assistant coach Orlando Early figured prominently in a criminal case against former Adidas executive James Gatto, business manager Christian Dawkins and Merl Code, a former Adidas consultant. The three men were convicted in October of conspiracy to commit wire fraud for funneling illegal payments to families of six student-athletes, including Dennis Smith Jr., who played a single season at NC State (2016-17) before being selected in the first round of the NBA Draft by the Dallas Mavericks.

Smith, a Fayetteville native, came to NC State as one of the most highly touted players in his high school class. Court papers say Gatto helped facilitate payments to Smith's family in the fall of 2015 to make sure the top prospect remained committed to play for the Wolfpack. It also alleges that a coach at NC State helped get money from Gatto's company to Smith's family.

Notre Dame releases non-conference men's basketball schedule (wsbt.com; Byrne)

The Notre Dame men’s basketball team released its 2019-20 non-conference schedule Wednesday, a slate that features meetings with 15 teams that advanced to postseason play in 2018-19.

The season-opener for the Irish, an Atlantic Coast Conference road trip to North Carolina, has already been announced and Notre Dame is expected to host an ACC opponent on Saturday, December 7, to push the total to 10 home games before the calendar shifts to 2020.

"I actually like it a lot," senior John Mooney said of opening against the Tar Heels.

"Playing at Carolina is always fun. Its packed all the time. It's gonna be jumping. Those are the games you want to play in. Those are the games you work out for, Those are the games you live for."

Mo’s BBQ & Ballroom: Smoky pork and chicken on the edge of Camillus (PS; Paventi)

The fragrant smoke from the outdoor pits at Mo’s BBQ and Ballroom caught our attention as we exited the highway onto Newport Road in Camillus. No billboard or advertising is more effective at drawing in a hungry customer than the scents of smoldering wood and seasoned meat.

Mo’s smokes the standard lineup of chicken, pork ribs, pork shoulder for pulled pork and beef brisket on its outdoor pits. The St. Louis-style pork ribs were smoked until fall-off-the-bone tender. The exterior had a solid bark and very little exposed fat. Crispy on the outside, the jumbo-sized ribs had the right amount of spice and smoke to enhance the meat.

A pink smoke ring appeared on the white meat chicken breast when we cut into it. The dry-rubbed half-chicken was tender and juicy in both the white and dark meat sections, not drying out at all while smoking. Overall, it was as good as the ribs.

The pulled pork was just as tender and juicy. It absorbed quite a bit of smoke, breaking down the fat and rendering the meat flavorful and stringy. Not quite on par with the other meats was the brisket. Though tender and moist, it the smoke overpowered the flavor of the meat and the texture was quite gummy.

Smoked meat is available on sandwiches, as individual dinners or in combination platters. We opted for the Sweetheart Combo for two ($37.99), which included a half-rack of ribs, a half chicken, and 4 oz. each of brisket and pulled pork, plus three sides and corn muffins, a Mo’s specialty. The miniature corn muffins were sweet and chewy, bursting with fresh corn flavor.

Mo’s is not new to the local dining scene. It relocated to its new home in 2018, occupying the spot formerly known as Stein’s Pub and Wise Guys Comedy Club and, prior to that, McNamara’s Pub. It’s a prime location with easy on-and-off access to the Route 5 Camillus bypass on the edge of the village. The new spot has two things its former location on Bennett Road in Camillus did not: a 5,000-square-foot event space capable of seating more than 250 people and a bar. Kevin Morrissey, Mo’s owner and namesake, opened that restaurant near Township 5 in 2010 and the menu remains largely the same: burgers, sandwiches and an assortment of meats from the smoker.
