Welcome to National Corn Fritter Day!

Corn fritters, a popular fried food, are celebrated today. There is some debate on exactly what fritters consist of, but one thing is certain, they are fried, either in a pan or in a deep fryer. In fact, their name is derived from the Latin word "frictura," which means "a fry." That word was derived from "frigere," which means "to fry". In general, a fritter has a batter or breading, and usually has fillings such as meat, seafood, vegetables, or fruit, although fillings are not absolutely necessary for it to be considered a fritter. Today we specifically celebrate corn fritters.

Corn fritters are sweet and savory, and are made with corn kernels (often whole canned corn), flour, milk, eggs, and melted butter. They are often served with fruit, jam, cream, or honey. Sometimes they are also made with creamed corn, and then baked and served with maple syrup. They were likely invented in the Southern United States, where they are popular like other fried foods, such as fried chicken. Their roots are in Native American cuisine: Native Americans ate many types of corn products in the Pre-Columbian era, although they didn't do any deep frying. Corn fritters were likely invented sometime after the Europeans arrived.

A breakdown of Syracuse’s non-conference schedule for 2019-20 season (PS; Waters)

Syracuse’s non-conference schedule for the upcoming 2019-20 basketball season compares favorably to last year’s schedule.

And that could be a good thing for the Orange.

In recent years, Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim has put together a non-conference schedule that both prepares the Orange for ACC play and also impresses the NCAA’s Selection Committee.

It’s an intricate balancing act, walking the line between scheduling too many tough games prior to conference play when the Orange will be challenged by the ACC’s elite teams and scheduling enough quality opponents to warrant an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament.

Syracuse has relied on a scheduling blend of games against Power 5 teams, strong mid-majors and a sprinkling of teams ranked outside the RPI’s Top 200.

Syracuse’s non-conference schedule for the 2019-20 was completed last week with the announcement of the last two non-league games.

So how does the Orange’s schedule look? It helps to compare the schedule to last year’s non-conference games.
Last season, Syracuse had a non-conference strength of schedule of 156. That was not nearly as high as Duke (7) or North Carolina (8), but it was much better than Virginia (255) or Michigan (309).

The respectable non-conference schedule set up Syracuse to have an overall strength of schedule ranking of 38 when the ACC schedule was added in.

ESPN.com’s Rachel Marcus joins The Juice on the Cuse podcast to discuss Syracuse’s top 5 performance in producing NBA Draft picks in the past decade. Editor in chief Brad Bierman then calls in to chat about the upcoming ACC Football Media Day.

Here are the highlights from the show:

Wesley Cheng: You wrote an article on ESPN.com titled “Ranking colleges that produce the most potentially impactful NBA players.” That’s a lot of loaded words in that title, so what exactly were you going for in your rankings?

Rachel Marcus: The important thing to keep in mind is that none of it was opinion based. It was all about the numbers. We created this system where we looked at NBA Draft over the past 10 years and assigned a score to each player. So if you were the first pick in the draft, we awarded a school 60 points and it decreased all the way to the last pick, which got one point. So the order of all of the teams was just based off how it fell after we created that. The words “potentially impactful” means we’re not rating how they did in the NBA. We’re just talking about having the chance to get there and do well.
