Welcome to National Hot Dog Day!

National Hot Dog Day was started by the North American Meat Institute in 1991 and began being promoted and organized by the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council after they were created by the institute in 1994. The day coincides with the Annual Hot Dog Lunch at Capitol Hill in Washington D.C., which is also sponsored by the North American Meat Institute. The lunch, which has taken place for decades, is a large hot dog picnic attended by lawmakers, administration officials, and Capitol Hill staff. The goal of the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council is for similar smaller events to be held around the country. Many national and local retailers have sponsored deals on the day. This holiday also takes place during National Hot Dog Month, which started in the 1950s.

Hot dogs gained in popularity in the United States in the early twentieth century, and are similar to frankfurters and wieners, which take their names from Frankfurt, Germany, and Vienna, Austria. In the United States, hot dogs were traditionally sold at hot dog stands and carts and were prominent in New York City, as well as Chicago. They have become a prominent part of American culture, and have been closely associated with baseball. Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest and the Oscar Meyer Wienermobile have also become cultural icons.

Iowa basketball has certainly been a competitive program under Fran McCaffery, but the Hawkeyes aren’t always in contention with elite recruits. The program is making an effort to change that.

One major target comes from near McCaffery’s last coaching stop, Siena. Albany’s Andre Jackson is a composite four-star player and one of the top wings in the nation.

247Sports ranks Jackson No. 67 overall and No. 2 in New York. He’s the No. 16 small forward in the class of 2020.

Currently, Syracuse is viewed as a solid favorite, which makes sense for the Upstate New York prospect. All six 247 crystal ball predictions have him donning Orange.

Another fairly local historic power, UConn, is involved, as is UCLA out West. Iowa looks like the outlier, but thanks to McCaffery’s Albany connections, the Hawkeyes seem to have a shot here.

The Albany roots, and Iowa’s style of play both appeal to Andre Jackson.
His AAU coach Jim Hart says Iowa’s more wide-open style fits Jackson’s abilities well. From Hawk Central:

“He really liked Iowa — liked the system. I mean, Fran (McCaffery) lets them play. It has a lot of freedom,” Hart said. “So, really, the other three are going to be pretty rigid on (Andre), and Fran’s going to let him go. So, maybe, that might be an advantage for them, if they’re selling it.”
It helps that Jackson has known McCaffery from when he was still in elementary school.

“They play fast. Coach McCaffery has been around my high school coach forever. They’re long-time friends,” Jackson said. “Coach McCaffery used to coach at Siena, which is 10 minutes from my house. It’s real cool. We have a good bond, and he was one of the first people to really hop on me in the recruiting process. He’s definitely been there the whole way, and he definitely believes in me. He’s a very loyal guy. I know his sons and stuff like that, so I’m real close with him and I definitely appreciate him.”

pasta-type-with-name-poster-of-italian-vector-clip-art_csp57470015.jpg

https://sujuiceonline.com/2019/07/17/syracuse-preps-for-italy-what-type-of-pasta-is-every-player/ (the juice; Irvine)

The Syracuse men’s basketball team held its first practice in preparation for a 10-game exhibition trip to Italy in August. The last time the Orange took a preseason foreign trip prior to the 2013-2014, the team won its first 25 games of the regular season.

With five incoming freshmen and only two returning upperclassmen who averaged more than 10 minutes per game in conference play, SU will undergo its biggest roster overhaul in several years.
The Italy trip offers the players a unique chance to develop on-court chemistry, as well bond off-court while dining on some of the finest cuisine in the world. To give fans an advanced look at what to expect of the new roster, here is the type of pasta that best represents each member of the Orange.
Joe Girard – Bavette. Did you know there is a Pasta World Championship? Neither did I. But apparently Barilla has put one on every year since 2016. The dish made by the first ever winner featured bavette pasta. And that’s why this pasta is perfect for Joe Girard. Not only is he New York State’s all time leading scorer with more than 4,000 points, he also scored the winning basket while leading his team to a New York state Class B championship. He’s a winner, and that’s all there is to it.
John Bol Ajak – Angel hair. The 6-foot-11 center is the prototypical Syracuse big: long and skinny, just like angel hair pasta. That doesn’t mean he can’t mix it up down low. Expect Ajak to assert himself as a rim protector on the defensive end of the floor.
Quincy Guerrier – Campanelle. This cone-like pasta with ruffled edges literally means “bellflower” in Italian. It’s great for soaking up thick, hearty sauces. With Tyus Battle and Oshae Brissett gone, Syracuse is going to need Guerrier to soak up the missing scoring. A versatile three-level scorer, Guerrier will do just that.

Boeheim’s Army adds player, who might or might not be team’s final roster move (PS; Ditota)

Add Michael Gbinije to the Boeheim’s Army roster.

The former Syracuse guard formally joined The Basketball Tournament squad Monday. The timing, he said, fit nicely with how his summer is shaping up. He recently signed a contract to play basketball in Germany for MBC. It will be his first foray overseas and opened up his summer to the possibilities of Boeheim’s Army.

“It’s the perfect fit for me. The timing, the games being in Syracuse,” he said, “I’m excited. I can’t wait. I haven’t been back to Syracuse since I graduated.”

Gbinije had posted on social media a few weeks ago that he was playing for the team, but did not complete the registration process back then. He said he had no idea a “selfie” video was required to make him an official team member. “As silly as that sounds, that’s what took the longest,” he said.

This time, he submitted his official confirmation video and was welcomed aboard the top-seeded team in the Syracuse region.

Boeheim’s Army has added a versatile piece in former Syracuse basketball star Michael Gbinije. Here’s why that could be the missing ingredient to a title.

Boeheim’s Army has finally revealed the latest addition to their TBT roster: former Syracuse basketball standout Michael Gbinije.

Over a month ago, Gbinije revealed on Instagram, “that he couldn’t wait to play with Boeheim’s Army this summer.”

Although according to general manager Kevin Belbey that maneuver was never made official.

We spoke with Belbey earlier this week breaking down the behind the scenes details of putting the Boeheim’s Army roster together (you can read the full piece here). During that conversation, Kevin explained how a player officially becomes a member of the squad.

https://insidetheloudhouse.com/2019/07/17/syracuse-basketball-orange-offers-schollies-pair-2022-guards/ (itlh; Adler)

The Syracuse basketball squad is hot on the recruiting trail, with SU recently extending offers to a duo of guards in the class of 2022.

Even as the Syracuse basketball team inches closer to the start of the 2019-20 campaign, the ‘Cuse coaching staff remains extremely active in its search for future roster additions. To that end, SU has offered scholarships to two guards in the class of 2022.

One of those prospects to receive an offer is Dior Johnson, who revealed this news via his Twitter page.

The second schollie offer got doled out to Chance Westry, according to multiple media reports, including a tweet from Adam Zagoria of Zagsblog.

The 6-foot-1 Johnson, a point guard who hails from Saugerties, N.Y. (about a three-hour drive to the Hill), is deemed one of the top talents in the 2022 class.

He currently attends Fairfax Senior High School in Los Angeles. ESPN.com slots Johnson at No. 19 across the country in the class of 2022. He is also rated five stars by ESPN.com.

https://ramblinwreck.com/b-j-elder-joins-georgia-tech-basketball-staff/ (ramblinwreck.com)

Former Georgia Tech player B.J. Elder, a standout member of the Yellow Jackets’ 2004 NCAA runner-up team, has joined the men’s basketball staff as associate director of player personnel, head coach Josh Pastner announced.

A veteran of 10 years in European professional basketball following his stellar Tech career, Elder, 36, joins the staff following three seasons as assistant boys’ basketball coach at Clarkston High School. He will serve as the basketball staff’s liaison with academic services, campus housing and dining, media and marketing, as well as spearhead outreach to former Tech players. He replaces Mario West, who left the program after three seasons to pursue coaching opportunities.

“We are excited to have B.J. Elder rejoin the Georgia Tech program,” said Pastner, entering his fourth season at the helm of the Yellow Jackets. “I have always said this program is about all the former players that have elevated it to a high level. B.J. is a guy that fits that bill, and he will do an outstanding job here.”

One of the most prolific 3-point shooters in school history, the 6-foot-4 Elder made his mark on the 2004 Georgia Tech team that reached the NCAA Championship game. He was named a Wooden Award finalist that season, in which he placed seventh among ACC scorers at 14.9 points per game and shot 78 percent from the foul line. Elder was an honorable mention All-America selection by the Associated Press that season, and was also named All-District 4 by the USBWA, All-District 5 by the NABC and was one of the final 20 candidates for the Wooden Award All-America team.

https://247sports.com/college/north-carolina/LongFormArticle/Longform-ACC-Network-UNC-Tar-Heels-Sports-TV-New-Broadcast-Era-133707833/ (247sports.com; Hayes)

Tommy Kearns was surprised when the phone rang. He and teammate Roy Searcy, his roommate, were in their hotel room after North Carolina defeated Kansas 54-53 in triple overtime to win the 1957 NCAA title in Kansas, Missouri.

The newly minted national champions were changing into blazers and ties before heading to Coach Frank McGuire’s suite to hear congratulatory words from Gov. Luther H. Hodges, a UNC graduate, but they paused to answer the call.

Sounds of a raucous party greeted them. Although neither player knew who was speaking to them, it was obvious that the callers were excited about UNC’s victory.

“It was people from Blowing Rock who found out what hotel we were in, and they were just beside themselves,” said Kearns, the team’s starting point guard. “That was a real, real treat for me.”

The mysterious congratulatory phone call remains a pleasant memory for Kearns more than 62 years later, and it shows how much the 1956-57 Tar Heels captivated their fans.

Television was a key factor in the love affair. Thanks in part to the heroics of that team, a mutually beneficial relationship developed between UNC and TV. Live sports on TV, still in its early years in North Carolina, grew in popularity in the state after the Tar Heels pulled off drama-filled, triple-overtime victories on back-to-back days in the Final Four. And UNC attracted positive attention from the exposure of those broadcasts.

TV technology has advanced significantly since then, with UNC and other schools now producing their own broadcasts of sporting events. As the ACC Network prepares to launch on Aug. 22, let’s reflect on the history of UNC sports on TV and take a glimpse into the future.

https://www.dukebasketballreport.com/2019/7/16/20694165/the-acc-network-is-just-37-days-away-duke-football-basketball-disney-plus (DBR; King)

Today is July 16th which means by our count the ACC Network debuts in 37 days (caveat: math here is always suspect).

There’s a certain amount of anxiety about carriage deals but anyone who has paid attention to arguments between carriers and local TV stations knows that negotiations come down to the wire quite often and sometimes a few days late.

Eventually they work it out and we suspect they will in this case too.

Even at this point the ACC has blown past the PAC-12’s inept network (the PAC-12 opted to do everything independently and not surprisingly has little leverage and has never reached an agreement with DirecTV, for example).

However some agreements have not yet been reached, notably: Comcast, Dish and Charter.

As usual though it’s hardball negotiations and many will come down to the end. It’s a terrible time for Florida State to be bad in football because not as many people are going to care. If the ‘Noles were Top Ten, fans would be going nuts and calling all three of those services. They still might but not that many have so far (many of them wouldn’t get the ACC Network if it started today).

We’d like to mention a couple of things to keep in mind here. Obviously everyone involved is (or should) be thinking about cord cutting and so forth. The market is changing rapidly.

https://virginiasports.com/news/2019/7/16/athletics-acc-network.aspx (virginiasports.com; White)

For the University of Virginia football team, its much-anticipated fourth season under head coach Bronco Mendenhall begins Aug. 31 against Coastal Division rival Pitt at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh.

ACC Network, a new 24/7 national platform comprising linear and digital, will air the Cavaliers' opener, as well as their next two games: Sept. 6 against William & Mary and Sept. 14 against Florida State, both at Scott Stadium.

UVA fans who don't attend those games, however, might not be able to view them at home.

ACC Network, a partnership between ESPN and the Atlantic Coast Conference, will launch on Aug. 22. Its current roster of carriers includes DIRECTV, Verizon, Hulu, Google Fiber and PlayStation Vue, but agreements have not been reached with such major providers as Comcast, Charter Spectrum, Cox and Dish Network.

"ESPN is responsible for the entire Walt Disney company portfolio of cable networks, which creates a marketplace advantage when entering into discussions with providers," said Stacie McCollum, senior director of programming and acquisitions for ESPN. "This marketplace position will benefit ACC Network."

Todd Goodale, UVA's senior associate athletics director for external affairs, said fans who want access to ACC Network should contact their carriers as soon as possible if those providers have not yet signed on.

"We need your help," Goodale said. "The cable companies and satellite providers who have not yet signed on to carry ACC Network need to understand the demand from Virginia fans. Send emails, post on social media and call your provider to let them know you want ACC Network and if you can't get it, you'll make a switch."

Also, Goodale noted, the Raycom Sports Network has televised ACC football and basketball games for years, but that will no longer be the case with the launch of ACC Network. In Virginia, those affiliates last season included WVIR-TV in Charlottesville, WTVR-TV in Richmond, WGNT-TV in Hampton Roads, and WWCW-TV in Lynchburg and Roanoke.

https://balldurham.com/2019/07/16/duke-basketball-roy-williams-copycat-k/ (balldurham.com; Giles)

What is an appropriate name for someone who seems to imitate the same Duke basketball recruiting methods he publicly condemns?

North Carolina coach Roy Williams has every right to sneak a peek at Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski’s answers to the annual recruiting test.

Such an act is not punishable.

Of course, even if a rule was in place, the NCAA would surely claim — in UNC’s case, anyway — that since non-coaches on the Chapel Hill campus have copied off peers’ exams in the past, the issue is not exclusive to the athletic department and is therefore not a violation.

Punishable or not, though, Duke fans have every right to investigate.

Let’s start back in January:

“UNC is starting to talk to me more since I got the Duke offer,” five-star 2020 center Walker Kessler told Rivals.

So at least one teenager has called out the suspect timing (by the end of January, to no surprise, Kessler had landed a UNC offer).

Another five-star, Paolo Banchero, may have questioned a similar “coincidence” on Monday: two days after Krzyzewski extended an offer to the 2021 power forward, Williams followed suit.

Congratulations to Noah Eagle (Ian Eagle's son and a '19 grad of the Newhouse School). In addition to being an excellent broadcaster, he is also a very nice young man. I randomly spent time with him during commencement weekend, and really enjoyed getting to know him.
Congrats Noah. He is the next great one out of Syracuse,
