ACC Basketball: Rating the ACC-Big Ten Challenge, 1-14 - College Hoops Watch (collegehoopswatch.com; Cross)

As the 21st ACC-Big Ten Challenge matchups and times were released last week, the anticipation of the 2019-20 season started to mount with the event set to run from Monday, Dec. 2 – Wednesday, Dec. 4. The following is a quick take on each of the games and a not-so-scientific rating of the 14 matchups.

  1. Duke at Michigan State – Dec. 3, 9 pm – It’s a Top 10 matchup for now as the Spartans have checked in as a preseason No. 1 in a plethora of polls. It’s an experienced Sparty team led by Cassius Winston against the usual talented Duke freshmen class, led by Vernon Carey, Jr., Matthew Hurt, and Cassius Stanley.
  2. Michigan at Louisville – Dec. 3, 7 or 7:30 pm – The Cardinals snared a Top 10 recruiting class to go around the talents of potential preseason ACC Player of the Year Jordan Nwora. Louisville looks like the preseason pick in the rugged ACC. Michigan is in year one of the Juwan Howard era as the Wolverines talents will be built around point guard Zavier Simpson.
  3. Ohio State at North Carolina – Dec. 4, 9:30 pm – Kaleb Wesson will impose himself physically on most teams the Buckeyes face as his inside presence is the focal point of most game plans. North Carolina has one of Roy Williams’ best recruiting classes in recent memory with a pair of 5-stars in Cole Anthony and Armando Bacot.
  4. Florida State at Indiana – Dec. 3, 9 pm – All Leonard Hamilton does is win and his Seminoles are at a point where they just reload. Losses of Mfiondu Kabengele and Terance Mann will be felt early, but Trent Forrest will lead another deep team back into the NCAA Tournament. Indiana is looking to return to NCAA play behind a backcourt of Rob Phenisee and Devonte Green.
  5. Virginia at Purdue – Dec. 4, 7:15/7:30 – What will the Cavaliers do for an encore after losing their Big Three of De’Andre Hunter, Kyle Guy and Ty Jerome? Virginia had offensive options aplenty last season; now, it may be an even slower pace accentuating the Pack Line defense. The Boilermakers can make a run at the Big Ten, even without Carsen Edwards who is off to the NBA.
  6. Notre Dame at Maryland – Dec. 4, 7:15/7:30 – The Terps can challenge the Spartans for the Big Ten title with Anthony Cowan, Jr., and Jalen Smith operating as a solid inside-outside tandem. The Fighting Irish have been decimated with injuries for the past two seasons and in some cases have only had 7 scholarship players in practice for a myriad of days in both seasons. Look for Rex Pfluger, who missed all of last season due to injury, to show in a huge way.
  7. Iowa at Syracuse – Dec. 3, 7/7:30 – A stellar matchup of styles with the 3-ball shooting Hawkeyes against Jim Boeheim’s heralded 2-3 zone. The playmaking of Iowa guard Jordan Bohannon will be a must as Syracuse will be led by Elijah Hughes and Marek Dolezaj with the losses of Tyus Battle, Frank Howard and Oshae Brissett to the NBA.

Disney, AT&T Appear To Be Close To Terms (DBR; King)

The latest bit of television brinkmanship seems to be all but over as signs point to a deal between Disney and AT&T which owns both AT&T U-Verse and DirecTV.

Disney seems to have backed off in its public posturing which people who follow such things closely suggest means that the end of the dispute is near.

We’re sure that for the ACC and SEC regions, that’s a big deal as people want their football (yes, even in the ACC, Mr. Finebaum).

It’s not a particular concern for Duke since it’s a bye week for the Blue Devils and they won’t play anyway.

It’s also bound to be a big relief around ACC headquarters. The ACC Network is still getting its sea legs if you will and the last thing it needs is a major disruption.

So assuming that this is correct, it’s all good news for the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Public hearing set for 1,000-job distribution center proposed in Clay (PS; Moriarty)

A public hearing has been set in Clay for a gigantic distribution center that would employ 1,000 people.

The Clay Town Board voted Monday night to hold a joint hearing with the town’s planning board at 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 30, in the auditorium of Liverpool High School on Wetzel Road. Parking will be available in the north lot.

Trammell Crow Inc. has proposed building a $280 million, 3.7-million-square-foot distribution center on land currently occupied by the Liverpool Public Golf and Country Club at the northwest corner of Morgan Road and the Liverpool Bypass, a half-mile north of the village of Liverpool.

Dallas-based Trammell Crow has said only that the tenant would be an e-commerce company or retailer that would employ 1,000 people. Logistics experts say the tenant likely would be e-commerce giant Amazon.

Trammell has asked for quick approval of its plans. It has applied to the town for a zone change from recreational to industrial, as well as for site plan approval.
