Welcome to National Cheeseburger Day!

Hamburgers are pretty satisfying, but they are just a little bit better when they are topped with cheese and turned into cheeseburgers. Celebrated today, cheeseburgers can be made with many types of cheese—as long as it has good meltability. Fast food restaurants often use processed cheese, such as American, but cheddar, pepper jack, Swiss, mozzarella, and blue cheese are often used to make cheeseburgers as well. Cheese slices are usually placed on top of burgers right before they are done cooking so that the cheese begins to melt over them. Multiple patties and multiple pieces of cheese may be used in each cheeseburger. Some cheeseburgers even have the cheese inside of the burger, often being called a Juicy Lucy. Just as with hamburgers, many other toppings are often added to cheeseburgers as well, such as ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, pickles, onions, lettuce, tomato, sauteed mushrooms, avocado, and bacon.

Adding cheese to burgers gained popularity late-1920s to mid-1930s. There are various stories to as how the cheeseburger came to be, and multiple people have claimed to have invented it. The most common story says that Lionel Sternberger invented the cheeseburger sometime between 1924 and 1926 while working at his father's restaurant, The Rite Spot, in Pasadena, California. One version of the story says he came up with the idea to drop cheese on a burger by himself, while another says a homeless person suggested to Sternberger to do so. Eventually, his burger was added to the menu as a "cheese hamburger." One reason some do not give Sternberger credit for inventing the cheeseburger is because his burger was not technically called a cheeseburger.

Orange Watch: Breaking down the 2019-2020 Syracuse basketball schedule - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)

Item: The ACC turned its annual release of the men’s conference basketball schedule, previously announced the last week of August or first week of September, into a prime time special program airing exclusively on the fledgling ACC Network. The show which ran on Sept. 12 was about 25 minutes late due to the women’s soccer match preceding it going to overtime. That slightly delayed the revealing of a new dynamic when it comes to a 20 game ACC schedule and the programming needs of the new TV network – a tough early season slate for the Orange.

We have known for months that Syracuse and Virginia would meet in a heavily-weighted season opening game at the Dome, beginning league play with only exhibition games against Daemen College (Amherst, N.Y.-based) and Canadian college power Carlton under Syracuse’s belt.
The league-created exclusive ACC Network broadcast of the SU-UVA game is a built-in inducement to any remaining distributor (we’re looking at you Comcast/Xfinity) to carry the new sports programming, and attract more TV households in the conference footprint for more ad/sponsor revenue.
It’s the other ‘Cuse ACC game at Georgia Tech shoe-horned in (December 8) just before fall semester final exams and the holiday break that now makes the 13 games between Nov. 6 (UVA) and Dec. 28 (Niagara) its own mini season of tough challenges home and away.
» Related: For Syracuse basketball, 2-point shooting will make the season
Here are some items that stand out to us about the entire 31 game regular season schedule and postseason NCAA sites:

  • The aforementioned Virginia opener is the toughest on paper since Charlotte upset SU in the Dome to begin the 2003-04 season, just over seven months after winning the ’03 national title.
  • In six of its first ten games, SU faces Virginia, Oklahoma State, either Mississippi or Penn State, Iowa, Georgia Tech, and Georgetown. This team will certainly be tested before the rest of the 18 ACC games begin with the Jan. 4 date at home versus Notre Dame.
  • The ‘Cuse does not play on a (Big) Monday night. That’s a slap in the face for a program that as recently as last season won at Duke on a Monday night. SU also does not play on a Thursday, but does have at least one game on every other day of the week.

Syracuse Basketball: 2020 5-star prospect Isaiah Jackson plans visit (itlh; Adler)

An encouraging development for the Syracuse basketball squad, as 2020 power forward Isaiah Jackson has lined up his trip to the Hill.

In late August 2020 five-star power forward Isaiah Jackson said that he wanted to take an official visit with the Syracuse basketball program. Now, it seems that Jackson’s wish has gotten granted.

Adam Zagoria of Zagsblog is reporting that the 6-foot-9 Jackson, from Waterford Mott High School in Waterford, Mich., will travel to Central New York and have an official visit with the Orange on Sept. 27-29.

Zagoria also wrote in his article that Jackson will visit Alabama, an SEC crew led by former Buffalo head coach Nate Oats, sometime in October. Jackson’s first official campus trip, to SEC and national powerhouse Kentucky, occurred around the end of August, and Zagoria notes that the Wildcats’ boss, John Calipari, expects to have a home visit with Jackson’s parents this week.
One of the premier players in the class of 2020, Jackson is widely regarded as a top-25 prospect across the country in that class.

Even with the ‘Cuse having a dozen guys and no seniors on its present roster, as well as a previous commitment from 2020 four-star power forward Woody Newton, Syracuse coaches continue to remain quite interested in Jackson and 2020 four-star wing Andre Jackson, at least as far as I can tell.

Isaiah Jackson received a scholarship offer from Syracuse more than a year ago, and he’s also visited the Orange campus, unofficially, in the past. The majority of primary recruiting services view Jackson as either the third- or fourth-best player at his position in the 2020 class, as well as the No. 1 guy in the state of Michigan.
He holds offers from roughly two-dozen groups, and recent stories from various recruiting analysts indicate that Jackson may still have under consideration, beyond of course Alabama, Kentucky, and the ‘Cuse, schools like Indiana, Louisville, Memphis, Michigan State, Missouri and Oregon.

Louisville basketball: 3 goals for Jordan Nwora entering 2019-2020 season (bigredloue.com; Thomas)

Louisville basketball junior Jordan Nwora already has an elite skill set, but here are a few intangibles he’d probably love to sharpen as he embarks on his final college season.

We already know he Louisville basketball rising junior Jordan Nwora is pro-ready. At this point, just about everyone does. The 6’8” Buffalo, New York product spurned the NBA draft in favor of returning to be a Cardinal this past summer and is looking to take the next step into his potential by leading Louisville on a deep run into the post-season.

As a fanbase, we have seen Nwora emerge as a top talent not only on the Louisville team and throughout the ACC, but heading into this season he is regarded as one of the best players in the country. Multiple experts have predicted Nwora to be the ACC Player of the Year come the end of 2019-2020, and for the Louisville Cardinals to be a serious contender for not only the ACC Championship but for the National Championship.
Jordan has been a busy bee lately. He’s been making noise on the international stage with the Nigerian Basketball team in the college offseason, helping his team qualify for the Olympics next summer. He finished the FIFA World Cup with averages of 21.7 ppg and 8 rpg.

Freight Yard, Onondaga County’s 22nd brewery, opens in Clay (PS; Cazentre)

Onondaga County’s newest brewery taproom is open, but there’s one thing the site is missing: There’s no brewhouse (brewing equipment) at that location. At least not yet.

Yet Freight Yard Brewing Co., owned by Bryan and Lou Sotherden, is a brewery and makes its own beer. It’s Onondaga County’s 22nd brewery, and the 12th in the suburbs outside of Syracuse.

For now, Lou Sotherden, the head brewer, travels to Old Chatham, south of Albany, to brew her beers in the brewhouse at Chatham Brewing Co. That’s where she learned how to brew several years ago.

The taproom, at 4975 Route 31 (between Morgan and Caughdenoy roads) has had soft openings.the past two weekends and will be open again Friday, Saturday and Sunday this week. The place was packed last Friday night.

“Having a sign up for an extended time saying there’s a brewery coming really helped generate interest,” Bryan Sotherden said. They’ve also used social media and word of mouth to let people know they’e open.
