5 things to watch as Syracuse basketball begins practice (PS; Waters)

The Syracuse Orange men’s basketball team will open the season on Nov. 6 against Virginia at the Carrier Dome.
On Wednesday, Syracuse will hold its first official preseason practice; the first of 30 practices leading up to the much-anticipated match-up with the defending national champs.

For Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim, who is entering his 44th campaign as the head coach at his alma mater, the next month and a half will be a crucial period as he looks to replace four departed starters off a team that went 20-14 and bowed to Baylor in the first round of the NCAA tournament last season.

Boeheim took his young squad, which features no seniors and five freshmen, on a four-game tour of Italy in August. That junket gave the Orange a head-start on its preseason preparations with 10 additional practices prior to the team’s departure to Italy.

But since the team returned from Italy, Boeheim and his assistants have been limited to just four hours per week to conduct on-court workouts with the players. Those sessions have consisted mainly of small group instruction with an assistant.

The four-hour per week limit does not include the time spent with strength and conditioning coach Ryan Cabiles. Nor does it account for any five-on-five scrimmages that the players have held outside the purview of the coaches.
All that changes on Wednesday when Boeheim will walk onto the court at the Carmelo K. Anthony Basketball Center, blow his whistle to bring the players into a huddle and begin the 2019-20 season.

Here are 5 key things Boeheim and his staff will hope to answer before the Nov. 6 date with Virginia.

1. Find a starting point guard
Syracuse must replace Frank Howard, a two-year starter at the point. Jalen Carey, a sophomore who appeared in 25 games as a freshman figures to get first shot at the job.

Syracuse Basketball: New ratings for 2021 class feature several Orange targets (itlh; Adler)

Recruiting service 247Sports has released its latest rankings for the 2021 class, and a handful of Syracuse basketball prospects are in the top 100.

The Syracuse basketball squad, due to its 13 scholarship players in the 2019-20 campaign, no seniors on its current roster, and a previous commitment from 2020 four-star power forward Woody Newton, is expected to have a relatively small 2020 recruiting class.

As such, the Orange’s near-term classes in 2021 and 2022 become extremely important, and the ‘Cuse coaching staff has remained quite active in doling out scholarship offers to numerous talented guys in both of these classes.

One of the primary recruiting Web sites, 247Sports, has unveiled the most recent version of its 2021 class ratings, and a bunch of Syracuse targets is featured in these national rankings. Let’s have a look at these studs in a bit more detail.

Kennedy Chandler is a five-star point guard who attends the Briarcrest Christian School in Eads, Tenn. The 6-foot-1 Chandler, slotted at No. 19 by 247Sports, holds a slew of offers from high-quality entities, such as Arizona, Florida State, Kansas, Memphis, Michigan, Oregon, Seton Hall, Tennessee and Texas Tech, which advanced to the 2019 NCAA Tournament title tilt, where it lost in overtime to Virginia.

Quincy Allen is a four-star small forward from the Maret School in Washington, D.C. The 6-foot-6 Allen, No. 22 via 247Sports, counts offers from groups including Boston College, Clemson, Florida, Georgetown, Marquette, Miami, N.C. State, Pittsburgh, Seton Hall, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest.

Franck Kepnang is a four-star center out of the Westtown School in West Chester, Pa. The 6-foot-10 Kepnang, placed at No. 25 by 247Sports, has received scholarship offers from crews like Connecticut, Pittsburgh, UCLA and Washington, which is led by former Orange assistant Mike Hopkins.

Boston College Basketball: Derryck Thornton’s scoring needed for 2019-20 (bustingbrackets.com; Freeman)

With a key injury before the season even starts, Boston College Basketball will be relying on Derryck Thornton for a ton of production. Otherwise, the Eagles could be in big trouble.

Out of the nearly 1,000 transfers this offseason, few are likely to have as big an impact this upcoming season as Derryck Thornton for Boston College Basketball. After two seasons at USC (and one prior with Duke), the former five-star recruit decided to come back to the ACC for his final season of college basketball.

Through 93 total college games (48 starts), the 6’3 guard has averaged 6.4 ppg and 2.8 apg in 23.4 mpg on 38% shooting from the field. He’s not the offensive threat many thought he would become out of high school but Thornton is a quality defender and has the experience to offer. The Eagles were happy to land him, knowing that he would be a nice stopgap for Ky Bowman, who led the team in all major categories last year. He was supposed to be a solid ACC facilitator for the team while providing leadership, defense and experience while the team brings in a

But Thornton’s plate got a lot bigger this month after the sad news of sophomore guard Wynston Tabbs expected to miss all of the 2019-20 season after undergoing knee surgery. The 6’2 off-guard averaged 13.9 ppg, 3.9 rpg and 2.7 apg in just 15 games played after dealing with injuries last season as well. Like all freshmen, Tabbs had his share of struggles when it came to efficiency but he was an outstanding scorer when healthy and available.

And with both Bowman and sharpshooter Jordan Chatman gone, he was supposed to have a big sophomore campaign for possible All-ACC honors this year. He was recently listed No. 12 overall for the top ACC returning players for this season according to Mychal Hunter of ACC Basketball Report.

Unfortunately, Tabbs season-long absence now leaves Boston College without three of their top four scorers, with just big man Nik Popovic (14.5 ppg and 7.2 rpg) the only returning player who scored more than 5.6 pg for the team. That leaves a ton of production to be replaced, with just Jared Hamilton and Chris Herren Jr. the only returning rotation perimeter players. There’s now a ton of pressure on a trio of incoming shooting guards (Jay Heath, Julian Rishwain and Kamari Williams) to have a big impact right out the gate to provide the needed scoring production.

Williams Will Miss 6-8 Weeks with Broken Foot - University of Louisville Athletics (gocards.com)

University of Louisville forward Malik Williams will be sidelined for 6-8 weeks after suffering a broken bone in his right foot in practice on Friday.

Elected as one of three captains for the Cardinals this year, Williams had a screw inserted into his fifth metatarsal Monday by Dr. John Ellis at Norton's Hospital in Louisville. The recovery time is expected to be 6-8 weeks for Williams, a 6-11, 245-pound junior forward from Ft. Wayne, Ind.

Williams started the last 20 games last season while producing four double-doubles. He was third on the team in rebounding and 19th in the ACC, averaging 6.1 rebounds and 7.7 points. Williams blocked a shot in 26 of 34 games as a sophomore and ranked 11th in the ACC in blocked shots (41 total, 1.2 average). He grabbed a career-best 13 boards against both North Carolina and Notre Dame. Williams averaged 9.8 points and 8.4 rebounds over the last five games of last season.

Montreal Construction transforming another decrepit Syracuse building (photos) (PS; Moriarty)

The Montreal Construction Co. is at it again, transforming yet another dilapidated building in Syracuse’s lakefront area into modern office space.

The company is rebuilding an old trucking terminal at 1004-1014 N. Geddes St., adding a second floor and completely renovating the rest of the structure.

Company President Len Montreal said the building shell will be completed by December. The interior will be completed after an office tenant is signed up for the 10,000-square-foot building, he said.

The project is costing a little more than $1 million, according to Montreal.

Built in 1959, the terminal sat vacant for approximately 15 years before Montreal began its transformation. The building is a block from the Syracuse Inner Harbor and a stone’s throw from an old trucking terminal that the construction company turned into office space in 2018 (and is now leasing to the Syracuse Teachers Association).
The construction company has transformed more than 20 old and badly deteriorated industrial and commercial buildings in the lakefront area -- mostly on and around Spencer Street -- into offices, apartments, retail space and restaurants. Montreal said all he company’s buildings are fully leased.

“Recycling, re-using, re-purposing,” he said. “We’re changing the face of the area one building at a time.”
