Welcome to the Start of Rosh Hashanah!

Rosh Hashanah takes place on the first day of Tishri, the seventh month in the Hebrew religious calendar. The name means "beginning of the year" in Hebrew, and it is also celebrated as the Jewish New Year, as it is the start of the new year on the Jewish civil calendar. It takes place 163 days after the start of Passover, and is the first day of a ten day period of self-examination and repentance called Yamim Noraim, which ends with Yom Kippur. It is observed by Jews throughout the world and is a public holiday in Israel.

Some celebrate Rosh Hashanah for just a day, but for many, it lasts for two days. It is a day of rest and prayer, where only a limited amount of work can be done. Many people of the Jewish faith take the day off from their jobs, and much time is spent in the synagogue. It is also a day of judgment, where God judges people on their deeds from the past year, and people ask for forgiveness from others for their past deeds as well. A shofar, made from the horn of a ram or another animal, is blown to symbolically wake up people of the Jewish faith and to alert them to and prepare them for God's judgment. In addition, the day is a time of remembrance when the creation of the world is commemorated.

Syracuse Basketball: Hey, the Orange is pretty good at this recruiting thing (itlh; Adler)

Some Syracuse basketball fans will complain about the team’s recruiting achievements or lack thereof, but this mindset is maybe a bit off.

The Syracuse basketball squad is frequently – and often unfairly – criticized for not recruiting as well as the sport’s blue bloods, but in actuality, the ‘Cuse isn’t so shabby in this department. In fact, from my perspective, the Orange is among the best in the country.
Sure, Syracuse typically loses out on top-flight targets to a handful of college-basketball powerhouses, such as Duke, Kansas, Kentucky or North Carolina, for example.

In all fairness, though, the vast majority of schools, many of which excel in collegiate hoops like the ‘Cuse, swing and miss when pursuing the cream of the crop. That’s the way the cruel and unforgiving world of recruiting works.
I get that a contingent of Orange fanatics are frustrated when a five-star prospect puts Syracuse in his small group of finalists, only to select the Blue Devils, the Jayhawks, the Wildcats, the Tar Heels, another high-level program across the country or a fellow Atlantic Coast Conference member.

I also recognize that some ‘Cuse fans feel disappointed if an elite high-school player from the state of New York – or, worse yet, from Central or Upstate New York – chooses to head to a destination besides the Hill.

It happens. Always has, and always will.

Still, for all those folks who view the Orange in a negative light as it pertains to recruiting, this article by Ben Burrows of Syracuse.com is worth a read.

Burrows, relying on rankings from the 247Sports Composite, listed every four- and five-star recruit that the ‘Cuse has secured dating back to 2003. By my count, during that span, the Orange has landed about 40 guys who got rated as either four or five stars, according to Burrows’ story.

I think that’s excellent, when you also factor in that Syracuse had scholarships taken away due to sanctions from a few years ago, ‘Cuse coaches recruit Canadian players who don’t get rated by all of the primary recruiting services, and head coach Jim Boeheim, as well as his assistants, tend to focus not necessarily on these somewhat arbitrary rankings, but rather on finding prospects who fit well into their system.

Whether it’s 2020 commit Woody Newton, current freshman Quincy Guerrier, all-time wins leader Brandon Triche, Tyus Battle, C.J. Fair, Rakeem Christmas, Dion Waiters, Donte Greene, Jonny Flynn or roughly 30 other Orange guys, Syracuse in recent memory has performed admirably in the recruiting arena.

Five star Isaiah Jackson down to three after Syracuse official (247sports.com; McAllister)

One of the top forwards in the 2020 class is Waterford (Mich.) Mott High power forward Isaiah Jackson. Jackson is rated a five-star prospect by the 247Sports Composite Ranking, and ranked as the 25th best player in the class as well as the third best power forward. Jackson's offer list is extremely impressive, holding scholarship opportunities from Alabama, Connecticut, Florida State, Georgetown, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisville, Maryland, Memphis, Michigan State, Oregon and Xavier among many others.

Jackson spent the weekend on the Syracuse campus for an official visit. His father, Wes, says the visit went very well. They went to the football game on Saturday, which was part of the tour of the elite facilities Syracuse basketball possesses.

"Yeah we went to the football game on Saturday and were able to see the facilities," Wes Jackson said. "We didn't get a chance to go up to the locker room or those types of things. But the guys were real good about showing us everything, the facilities, the practices. I had a chance to work out Saturday morning using their facility at the Melo Center.

Good Samaritans help stop knife-wielding robber at Syracuse gas station: Police (PS; House)

Two good Samaritans helped stop a knife-wielding robber who was trying to use a stolen ATM card at a Syracuse gas station, police said.

Sayvion Blount, 25, of Syracuse, was arrested shortly after midnight Saturday by the Syracuse Police Department and charged with robbery. He was arrested after he threatened several people with knife inside a downtown gas station, said Officer Joseph Commisso, a police department spokesman.

The robbery was reported at 12:03 a.m.

Blount forcibly stole $600 and bank cards from a woman in the 100 block of Almond Street, Commisso said. After the robbery, the victim -- a 22-year-old woman -- followed Blount to Speedway in the 400 block of Erie Boulevard East and called police, he said.
Blount went inside the gas station and tried to use the woman’s card to withdraw money from an ATM, Commisso said. When two good Samaritans intervened, Blount pulled out a knife and threatened several people, he said.

Officer Alvin Herrington, a K-9 handler, arrived at the gas station and detained Blount.
