First football game, McGill vs Harvard, May 14th 1874

Welcome to American Football Day!

Celebrate the day by watching professional, college, or high school football, by either going to a game or watching one on television. You could also listen to a game on the radio. Spend the day playing a game of football with friends, or just toss around a football. This may also be a good day to dig out your old football cards or other football memorabilia.

Did an escape room excursion prepare Virginia for Syracuse’s Carrier Dome? (PS; Waters)

Tony Bennett likes to engage his players in team-bonding activities.

In recent years, the Virginia coach has used a softball game, white-water rafting and putt-putt golf as ways for his players to have some fun and build camaraderie.

After winning the NCAA championship last April and losing three stars to the NBA, Bennett got even more inventive prior to this season.

He took the Virginia players and coaches to an escape room. They divided up into foursomes.

Bennett’s group struggled, but the others refused to use the big, Styrofoam question mark that would prompt a helper to come into the room and provide a clue.

“We were in there for a while,’’ Bennett said. “I kept asking if we should ask for a clue and they were like ‘No! No! We can figure this out’.’’

Bennett then figured out a way to get help without his teammates knowing.

“Whenever they were trying to figure it out, I’d grab that Styrofoam question mark and hold it up to the camera so they would come in and give us a clue,’’ Bennett said. “I did that a couple times or we would’ve been in there forever.’’

On Wednesday night, Bennett might be looking for another way to escape when the Virginia Cavaliers begin their defense of the 2019 NCAA title with an ACC road game against Syracuse at the Carrier Dome.

Virginia is the first national champion to open the following season with a true road game since UCLA in 1968.

“We talked about it in our coaches’ meetings in the spring,’’ Bennett said. “It sounded like a better idea at the time than it does right now.’’

D.O. Sportscast: The men's basketball beat writers previews the season (DO; podcast; Staff)

Syracuse opens its season against Atlantic Coast Conference foe Virginia in the Carrier Dome. Before that, Josh Schafer, Nick Alvarez and Michael McCleary discuss the best-case scenario for Syracuse this season, preview the Orange’s game against the reigning champion Cavaliers and talk about potential rotations that head coach Jim Boeheim will run.

Roster analysis — 2019 Syracuse Basketball preview - The Juice Online (the juice; Stechschulte)

There is plenty of turnover from the 2018-19 Syracuse basketball team to this year, including the loss of four starters. With that in mind, here is a look at the 2019-20 roster:

The lone returning starter, redshirt junior Elijah Hughes (6’6”, 215 pounds) will be the lead offensive threat for the Orange this season. In his first season for SU after sitting out following his transfer from East Carolina, the small forward started every game and led the team in three-point field goals made with 87 and three-point percentage at 36.9 percent. Hughes’ 13.7 points per game average was second on the team and he saved his best for last, tying a season high with six three-pointers while pouring in a personal-best 25 points in the NCAA Tournament loss to Baylor. The stiffest tests for Hughes this season will be how he handles being the focus of opposing defenses on a nightly basis and developing as a playmaker, an additional role the coaching staff has asked of him.

Freshman Quincy Guerrier (6’7”, 220 pounds), a new addition to the Orange roster, will start at the other forward position. The native of Montreal is slotted to start at the other forward spot after doing so during the summer trip to Italy. Guerrier provided an instant impact on that tour, posting a pair of double-doubles and averaging 11.8 points and 9.3 rebounds over the four games on the trip. Guerrier averaged 24.7 points and 6.2 rebounds in his final season at Thetford Academy.

Marek Dolezaj (6’10”, 185 pounds), the junior from Slovakia, returns to his reserve forward role. Dolezaj averaged just shy of 22 minutes per game last season and posted modest averages of 4.1 points and 3.5 rebounds per outing. While his imprint on the scoresheet is not abundant, Dolezaj is a key contributor through his understanding of the game and ability to do a little bit of everything. Dolezaj led the team in assist-to-turnover ratio and steals last campaign while spending a significant amount of time filling in at center despite his lack of bulk.

Syracuse basketball season preview (247sports.com; McAllister)

Syracuse basketball is about to embark on yet another season in Central New York. The Orange, led by head coach Jim Boeheim, do not have the same level of expectations as they did at this time last year. Last year, Syracuse was coming off of a Sweet-16 run and had everyone back including superstar Tyus Battle and emerging star Oshae Brissett. Much was expected of Syracuse, who were ranked in the preseason polls and were supposed to compete for the ACC title.

Instead, Syracuse struggled all season with many of the same issues that made them a bubble team the year prior. Syracuse finished the regular season and ACC Tournament with a 20-13 record. They made the NCAA Tournament as an eight seed and faced nine seeded Baylor. The Bears hit 16 three pointers on their way to a nine point win.

Syracuse was without starting point guard Frank Howard, who was suspended due to a violation of team policy. This after he missed the first several games of the season with an injury and Tyus Battle missed ACC Tournament games with a medical issue of his own. Syracuse overcame the loss of Battle to win one game in the ACC Tournament and challenge national championship favorite Duke. They were not able to deal with the loss of Howard in the NCAA Tournament, however.

Now, Frank Howard, Tyus Battle and Oshae Brissett are all gone. There is new blood in Central New York, which has created a level of excitement amongst the fan base. How will the Orange fare this season? Let's preview the season as only CuseNation.com can.

POSITION PREVIEW: POINT GUARD
By: Robert Bruin
Projected Starter: Jalen Carey
Key Reserves: Joseph Girard and Brycen Goodine
Growth by Carey
Harlem standout, Jalen Carey contributed to the Orange's 20-14 winning season, but this year he looks to take full control of the team. Carey has the tools run a fluent, effective offense and hopefully sharing playing time with two new guards Goodine and Girard will not effect him. The breakout game against Uconn last year, allowed Orange nation to see the special side of Carey's game. This year consistency is a goal of Carey, using his speed and high IQ level to make sure his teammates individual games elevate. After exhibition game last Saturday Carey showed strong improvement in every area of his game except turnovers.

Syracuse basketball players ready to cash in their golden ticket vs Virginia (itlh; Esden Jr)

Syracuse basketball has a stiff challenge to open the 2019-20 season. Here’s why the players are embracing the ACC clash vs Virginia.

Sorry, there won’t be any cupcakes to start the Syracuse basketball season, instead, they’ll face the best of the best vs the Virginia Cavaliers.

While that could certainly strike fear into any young player, the Orange are looking forward to the litmus test this will provide right off the get-go, here’s what Buddy Boeheim had to say:

“We’re ready to go, man, we’ve competed every day in practice. In Italy, we got to experience some ups and downs. I love this game vs Virginia, it’s the best competition right from the start. We don’t want an easy opponent to start off the game, it’s the perfect way to start the season vs the Cavaliers. This is going to set the tone, and we’ll know from this game what we need to work on and what ways we can improve.”

On top of playing a super team to start the season, Syracuse’s schedule just got that much more difficult with the ACC expanding the conference schedule from 18 to 20 games. Despite the fact it’s now harder to make the NCAA tournament, Buddy Boeheim doesn’t look at it that way:

“I look at it from a different viewpoint, there are now more opportunities for us to get good wins, go to tough places, and to grow as a team. The ACC is the best league in the country and we’re excited to kick things off on Wednesday.”

Frank Malfitano sends open letter to community: We need to save Syracuse Jazz Fest (PS; Malfitano)

Every day for the past two years we’ve been asked the same question….is Syracuse Jazz Fest over, or is it coming back? The answer to that question is ultimately going to be up to you, the members of the Syracuse community, and to the decision-makers and movers and shakers in the community who have the power and ability to make it happen. But first, the backstory.

In the spring of 2018, Syracuse Jazz Fest Productions held a press conference at the Genesee Grande Hotel to announce that a 2018 festival would probably not happen unless a new title sponsor was found to replace the recently departed M&T Bank, which informed festival officials that it would not be renewing its contract with the Jazz Fest corporation at the conclusion of its then current multi-year pact that expired in 2017, in conjunction with the festival’s historic 35th Anniversary edition.
