Welcome to National Nachos Day!

Nachos are celebrated today! They trace their roots to the border of Mexico and Texas. One day in 1943, the wives of ten U.S. soldiers stationed at Fort Duncan in Eagle Pass, Texas, crossed the border into Piedras Negras, Mexico. When they stopped in to eat at Club Victoria, chef Ignacio "Nacho" Anaya threw together a snack to give them and called it "Nachos Especiales". In 1954 his recipe was published in St. Anne's Cookbook, by the Church of the Redeemer in Eagle Pass.

There are many variations of nachos. "Ballpark nachos"—covered with jalapenos and melted cheese—were invented by Sal and Margarita Manriquez, and are now popular at sports stadiums. Sal Manriquez started selling them as "Margarita's State Fair Nachos" at the State Fair in Dallas in 1964, and in 1975 asked to sell them at Arlington Stadium, where the Texas Rangers then played. Manriquez was turned down and later found out that the stadium was selling a version of his nachos anyway.

Syracuse basketball vs. Virginia: What to Watch For (PS; Waters)

If the Carrier Dome still featured the huge blue curtain behind the movable bleachers, this would be occasion to actually pull back the curtain for an opening night.

The Syracuse Orange will make its 2019-20 debut with a season-opening home game against the defending national champion Virginia Cavaliers at the Carrier Dome. (Game time is 9 p.m. on the ACC Network).

Virginia was ranked No. 11 in the Associated Press’ preseason poll, while Syracuse was unranked.

Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim will begin his 44th season at the helm of the Orange basketball program with a team that features no seniors, one returning starter and five incoming freshmen.

Virginia, which defeated Texas Tech 85-77 in overtime in the NCAA title game to cap off a 35-3 season, enters the season with high hopes and a lot of holes to fill with the departures of three players to the NBA.

Syracuse basketball: Here’s to a new season and a return to routines (PS; Axe)

The 2019-20 Syracuse University men’s basketball season starts with an unfamiliar bang.

The Orange tips off against No. 11 Virginia, the defending national champions of college basketball, at 9 p.m. Wednesday night at the Carrier Dome.

An ACC and ranked opponent on the slate less than a week after Halloween to appease the ACC Network overlords. It certainly beats a visit from Eastern Washington to start the season.

New blood is welcome, but there is something comforting about the familiar routine a college basketball season brings in Syracuse, N.Y.

So raise your Dome foam to the moments you can set your watch by over the next four months.

Here’s to the 44th season of SU basketball led by James Arthur Boeheim and the snippy responses to a reporter’s inquiry, snorts, stares, nose picks, pick-and-rolls, coat tosses, 2-3 zone references, cries of “we need to get better” and referee rants that define the Hall of Famer’s tenure on the hill.

Here’s to the guy in your section grumbling that Boeheim should play more man-to-man. You know, just to "see how it goes.”

Syracuse Basketball: Game time, TV, Radio and more vs Virginia (itlh; Peelman)

The Syracuse basketball team plays their first game of the season against Virginia on Wednesday night. Inside The Loud House gets you ready with what you need to know to be able to watch and listen to the game.

Syracuse basketball is back and it’s about time too! Syracuse football has been atrocious this year and has fallen short of so many expectations, making people crave basketball season again.

The good news is this team is super talented, but the bad news is that it lacks experience. Which will win out? Who knows? One thing is for sure though: the opener against Virginia is on Wednesday night which should give us a lot of answers to our burning questions.

As mentioned, this Syracuse basketball team is young, and that means lots of freshmen. In fact, the 2019 class has five incoming freshmen this year:

  • Quincy Guerrier, a 6-foot-7 Canadian basketball forward who has NBA level skills already. Can post up on offense or shoot from long range.
  • Joe Girard III: a combo guard who is New York State’s All-Time Leading scorer. He was a bit underrated coming out of high school but is a talented scorer both off the dribble as well as from outside.
  • John Bol Ajak: a 6-foot-10 center who can block shots and has decent skills offensively around the rim. He is raw but could develop to be a force in the middle of the 2-3 zone given time.
  • Brycen Goodine: a shooting guard who can shoot really well. He has great length and is the highest-rated player in this year’s class, according to ESPN.com. (Guerrier isn’t ranked)
  • Jesse Edwards: a 6-foot-11 forward/center who is good offensively in the post, but is still raw on defense. He can block and alter shots with his length but is still foul prone. He is a developmental player but could be really good over time.
These five will be joined by point guard Jalen Carey, shooting guard Buddy Boeheim, small forward Elijah Hughes, forward/center Marek Dolezej, forward/center Bourama Sidibe, small/power forward Robert Braswell, and point guard Howard Washington.

Syracuse vs. Virginia: Prediction, pick, odds, point spread, betting line, basketball game, time, preview (cbssports.com; Norlander)

Some intrigue on the second night of college basketball's 2019-20 season: the reigning national champions will open their campaign on the road. That rarely happens, and in fact hasn't happened in more than 40 years. But due to the birth of the ACC Network coinciding with that conference growing from 18 to 20 league games, there are intra-league contests peppered throughout the first week of the season.

So Virginia will play at Syracuse in the most intriguing game Wednesday night has to offer. The Orange will debut on the heels of a 20-14 season that ended in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to Baylor. It's a nice twist, if not a little weird, to have intra-conference games immediately. If anything, it provides a little more eclecticism to the first week of the season than we'd otherwise get.

Storylines

Virginia: Easy: UVA is coming off its first national title in school history and as a result lost more players to one NBA Draft than ever before (three: DeAndre Hunter, Ty Jerome, Kyle Guy). Two starters from last season are back: Mamadi Diakite and Kihei Clark. But Tony Bennett told me this offseason this challenge will be unlike any he's ever had, not just because of the title "defense," if you will, but having to make up for so much offense. Having UVA go against the 2-3 zone immediately is a tasty subplot, for sure. Look for Braxton Key to attempt to exploit it. He can shoot from the midrange and might become the Hoos' most important player int his one.

Syracuse: The Orange have never finished below .500 under Jim Boeheim (40-plus years!) and won't again this season, but how good will SU be? No one's really sure. Mega minutes-getters Tyus Battle and Oshae Brissett, as is point guard Frank Howard. Elijah Hughes is now the alpha, but will Buddy Boeheim pop in his sophomore season? Look for Boeheim or sophomore Jalen Carey to be sources of offense on Wednesday, or at least try to. This sets up as one of the more mysterious Cuse teams of the past decade, at least.
