Welcome to Dome Deflation Day!

This morning at 7 AM, an icon of Syracuse architecture will start the process of being decommissioned. By the end of the day, the fabric of the old roof should be gone forever. It was a good run. Thanks Birdair, Inc!

Syracuse will lower the Carrier Dome’s air-inflated roof for the final time this morning (PS; Carlson)

The Carrier Dome’s air-inflated roof will be deflated for the final time this morning, bringing an end to an era both in Central New York and across the country.

The deflation process is set to start at 7 a.m. The roof is expected to take between 45 minutes to an hour to be lowered inside the building, where it will hang about 30 feet off the ground until it is removed by workers.

The time was set early Monday morning, after a final check of the weather forecast.

Axe: Will Boeheim change with several SU players reportedly transferring? (PS; Axe)

The only constant in life is change and several Syracuse basketball players have announced or will reportedly see if the grass is indeed greener on the other side.

The question now is if Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim has to change as a result.

Brycen Goodine has announced he is transferring. Jalen Carey and Howard Washington are reportedly joining Goodine on the transfer train out of Central New York.

Add in Elijah Hughes’ likely departure to the NBA Draft and a reported possible transfer for forward Robert Braswell and that makes five players that will be playing basketball elsewhere next season.

I would like to thank the Syracuse staff and fans for having me at the University this year, however it is time for me to seek out a new beginning. Thank you, Syracuse!
— Brycen Goodine (@BrycenGoodine) March 13, 2020
It’s not exactly breaking news but worth noting that Syracuse has ranked outside the Top 300 teams in the country in terms of minutes played by bench players for each of the last eight seasons, according to basketball statistician Ken Pomeroy.

Players on Boeheim’s bench that don’t crack his preferred seven-or-eight man rotation are used to social distancing.

Does the reported mass exodus from his roster expose Boeheim’s short-bench philosophy as outdated or simply highlight new opportunities for impatient young players to explore the NCAA transfer portal for a school that appreciates their talents?

The good news is Syracuse has relief in sight with a commitment from Dior Johnson, the top point guard in the Class of 2022. Chance Westry, a five-star guard in the Class of 2022, has visited Syracuse and the Orange is considered the favorites to land him, according to some recruiting experts.

The bad news in Goodine’s exit, along with Carey and Washington’s reported departure, leaves Syracuse with just two scholarship guards returning next year in Joe Girard III and Buddy Boeheim. They will be joined by freshman Kadary Richmond, a combination guard who is ranked the No. 96 prospect in the Class of 2020 by 247 Sports.

“I just want to get the opportunity to play," Goodine told syracuse.com colleague Mike Waters "I don’t think it was going to happen at Syracuse.’’

Washington worked his tail off and was an inspiring figure off the court, collecting the ACC’s Bob Bradley Courage Award, but would face an uphill battle to play significant minutes over Boeheim or Girard at guard.

Braswell, a 6-foot-7 forward, played in 19 games across a season-plus before redshirting. He seemingly would have an opportunity to bolster a weakened Syracuse front court next year, but reportedly has seen enough.

The Orange is slated to bring in 6-foot-9 freshman Woody Newton next season, a forward wh

Monday Musings: Coronavirus impacts recruiting calendar (247sports.com; McAllister)

1. It is a strange time in the sports world right now with seemingly everything cancelled. That includes face to face recruiting visits. That means no unofficial visits, no official visits, coaches cannot go visit a high school, no live evaluation, etc. Everything has to be done virtually through social media communications, FaceTime, text message and/or phone calls. While there are certainly a bevy of communication channels available, it still makes things more difficult without any face to face interaction. That will have a significant impact on the recruiting calendar.

2. Let's start with basketball. Over the weekend, reports surfaced that Brycen Goodine, Howard Washington and Jalen Carey would all transfer. That takes three guards off of the roster, and leaves the Orange with only three for next year as of now. Clearly Syracuse will want to bring in a fourth guard at a minimum. In order to do that, generally there are in person evaluations, official visits, etc. in order for both sides to see if it is the right fit. None of those things are happening anytime soon. That significantly impacts Syracuse's ability to add another guard. Think of it this way. If Syracuse wanted to try to get involved with a high school prospect who had already been talking to other schools and/or visited other schools, Syracuse will have a hard time getting involved this late in the cycle. It is difficult anyway, but the prospect cannot visit Syracuse anytime soon. It is unlikely that such a prospect would delay his decision until after the coronavirus pandemic dissipates in order to visit. It is also unlikely that such a prospect would pick Syracuse without visiting, depending on the circumstances. That makes it much more challenging for coaches to fill that guard spot.

3. Now let's look at football. The spring is usually a time of heavy recruiting information. There are a bunch of on campus visits, including for spring practices and weekend trips of priority targets. However, none of that will happen now. That also means, assuming the cancellations are not lifted, there will not be a spring evaluation period. That is usually a time when a lot of new offers are extended, prospects move up and down the recruiting board, etc. That cannot happen now. Usually during the spring is when the first commitment of a recruiting cycle usually happens. While that still may occur, it does become less likely without new prospects emerging or new priorities developing. In fact, we do not even know if the normal summer on campus recruiting camps will still be allowed to happen at this point. Those are significant recruiting tools and evaluation tools that may take place. The good news is that it impacts every school in essentially the same way. It will push the recruiting calendar back significantly and make the fall much more active assuming the pandemic is under control by then.

Syracuse Transfer Brycen Goodine One to Watch - Friar Basketball (friarbasketball.com; Farrafar)

We did not expect today’s focus to be recruiting, but with the cancellation of the NCAA tournament, word is starting to trickle out about student-athletes who have decided to enter the transfer portal.

One of those is Syracuse guard Brycen Goodine, and he is certainly a name for Friar fans to keep an eye on over the coming weeks. Goodine is one of three guards to announce their decision to transfer from Syracuse this month. The New Bedford, MA native starred at Rhode Island powerhouse St. Andrew’s in high school, after winning a Division III Massachusetts state title at Bishop Stang.

Goodine did not receive the press of most top local recruits, likely because he decided to commit to Syracuse at the beginning of his junior year at St. Andrew’s (which was very similar to how another St. Andrew’s star, Michael Carter-Williams, pledged to the Cuse his junior year a decade earlier).

Goodine’s was one of the best players in NEPSAC’s Class AA during his time at St. Andrew’s — the league that was headlined by AJ Reeves (Brimmer and May), David Duke (Cushing), Marcus Zegarowski (Tilton), and Cole Swider (St. Andrew’s).

Syracuse Basketball: What’s former Orange star Brandon Triche up to? (itlh; Queripel)

Former Syracuse basketball star, Brandon Triche is still playing as many leagues shut down. Let’s take a look at what he’s been up to.

We take a look at another former Syracuse basketball star and where they are now. As of the current moment, virtually every professional league is on pause. But not the Basketball Super League in Turkey.

Brandon Triche currently plays for Pinar Karsiyaka after leaving ‘Cuse. While the novel coronavirus has stopped many sport leagues, Triche commented on his league’s decision:

“I think we are all anxious and nervous. When you see people in our profession test positive, the conversation becomes more real. It’s a worldwide virus and no one wants to get it or spread it,” Triche said. “When you play basketball, one of the reasons you play is to make money. Safety is more important than money. I guess the only thing you can do is go with the league decision. I would not say I’m glad I am playing. But I feel okay playing if they believe it is safe.”

With Triche still in action, let’s take a look at his current stats and his career on the Hill. For Syracuse, Triche stayed all four seasons and played in 147 games and started in every contest except one.

Every year at Syracuse, Triche and the Orange made it to the NCAA tournament. The team made it all the way Final Four in his senior season.

Let’s take a look at his stats in his senior year with the Orange; 2012-13 Syracuse stats, per basketball-reference:

  • 13.6 points per game
  • 3.6 assists per game
  • 3.4 rebounds per game
  • 1.3 steals per game
