Welcome to Great Lakes Awareness Day!

Great Lakes Awareness Day celebrates the Great Lakes and highlights the issues they face, and how the lakes can be preserved. Events for the day have involved organizations such as schools, aquariums, and museums. There is not much information available online about how the day is celebrated or how it came to be.

There are five Great Lakes: Superior, Huron, Michigan, Ontario, and Erie. Together they make up the largest body of freshwater on Earth and stretch 750 miles from east to west. They are located on the border of the United States and Canada and touch the states of Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, Ohio, Indiana, New York, and Pennsylvania. It is believed that at one time the Great Lakes were covered by a glacier—it receded towards Canada and left depressions filled with water.

Lake Huron is named after the Wyandot Indians, also known as the Huron Indians, and its surface area is the second largest of the lakes. Manitoulin Island is located in it—the largest island in a freshwater lake in the world. Lake Huron connects to Lake Michigan by the Straits of Mackinac. Lake Michigan takes its name from the Ojibwa word for "large lake." It is the third largest Great Lake in surface area, and the second largest in volume. It is the only Great Lake completely in the United States.

How much do Syracuse basketball players benefit from redshirting? - The Juice Online (the juice; Cheng)

Recently, my colleague Chris McGlynn wrote two stories about how Syracuse basketball has used the transfer portal to their advantage, nailing nearly every one of their incoming transfers.

That got me thinking about whether Syracuse has used another common college tactic well: The redshirt.

There are a couple of caveats to my analysis. For one, I am not including incoming transfers among this list who are mandated to sit out one year per NCAA rules (this requirement is set to change in the 2021-22 season). Most of these players (like Wes Johnson, Elijah Hughes and Alan Griffin) are ready to play right away, and are only sitting out because the (arbitrary) rule dictates they must.

I also didn’t include Anthony Harris who redshirted in his sophomore year because of academic reasons. Harris did go on to average 22.4 points at Hawaii, but doesn’t really count for this list because his redshirt reason wasn’t solely to improve his game.

Another category of redshirt I’m not including in here is the medical redshirt. Players like Andy Rautins and Eric Devendorf aren’t included because from a skills perspective, they were ready to contribute. They were only redshirted because they were physically incapable of playing.

Hey NCAA, let Syracuse basketball recruit Alan Griffin play right away (itlh; Adler)

The NCAA needs to do the right thing and grant immediate eligibility to traditional transfers, including Syracuse basketball recruit Alan Griffin.

Whether Alan Griffin, a transfer from Illinois, will have the ability to suit up for Syracuse basketball in the 2020-21 campaign remains a mystery.

That’s because the NCAA, an often-criticized group which in all fairness has a lot on its plate right now, can’t quite seem to sort everything out.

On the one hand, a few days ago, the NCAA took an important step toward allowing student-athletes to profit from their own name, image and likeness in the future – even if many questions remain over the NCAA’s proposal on this topic.

Another big-time issue that affects the status of Griffin, and countless others, is whether the NCAA will modify its transfer rules so that student-athletes in all collegiate sports, including basketball and football, can transfer once with immediate eligibility.

Syracuse basketball commit Dior Johnson delivers gems on social media (itlh; Adler)

If you want a sense of what Syracuse basketball commit Dior Johnson is all about, have a look at his Twitter page. It’s inspiring and hilarious.

One of the biggest subjects that will surround Syracuse basketball over the next two years is whether elite commit Dior Johnson will ever actually step foot on the Orange campus.

The 6-foot-3 Johnson, who hails from Saugerties, N.Y., and clearly has an admiration for the ‘Cuse, is a five-star point guard in the 2022 class. He’s universally regarded by the main recruiting services as a top-15 guy across the country in his class.

Sports Illustrated recently broke the news that Johnson will spend his final two stanzas of prep ball at the powerhouse Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Va., which has produced multiple other Syracuse stars, including Eric Devendorf and some dude by the name of Carmelo Anthony.

Johnson has made it clear that, as far as college goes, the Orange is it for him, and the rising high-school junior committed to the ‘Cuse back in February.

How warm did it get Sunday, and did it set a record? (PS; O'Toole)

There’s no question it was a beautiful, sunny Sunday in Central New York. But just how warm did it get, and did it set a record?

The high temperature in Syracuse was 78 degrees, set at 3 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. That tied for the ninth-warmest May 3 on record in Syracuse, the weather service said.

The record high temperature for May 3 is 88 degrees, set in 1944 and again in 2001.

On May 3, 1965, Syracuse nearly set a record when temperatures reached 86.

In 1913, a record was set when temperatures reached 85.

In 1942, Syracuse saw temperatures reach 83 degrees.

Then, in 2018, the high temperature hit 82 degrees in Syracuse.

In 1980, Syracuse’s high temperature reached 79 degrees.

And now four times in Syracuse’s weather history books — in 1937, 1993, 2015 and today — temperatures reached 78 degrees. That was good enough to tie the ninth-warmest temperatures on record.
