A Syracuse alumni wishlist for Boeheim's Army - The Juice Online (the juice; Cheng)

Boeheim’s Army suffered a disappointing loss in the quarterfinals on Saturday, bowing out to Sideline Cancer 65-48. The Army will be back next year, and perhaps General Manager Kevin Belbey can check off a few of these wish list players:

Andy Rautins: Rautins was one of the best shooters in Syracuse history, shooting 40.7 percent (98 of 241) his senior season. In 14 international games in the 2019-20 season for Panathinaikos, he shot a torrid 51.4 percent according to RealGM. In two games, Boeheim’s Army finished 8 for 48 from downtown. Certainly, having Rautins, who also has the ability to play the point, would’ve been able to help with that.

Dion Waiters: ‘Waiters Island’ may not be the style of play desired in the NBA, but Waiters ability to create his own shot is exactly the kind of player that the TBT embraces. Waiters averaged 9.3 points in 14 minutes per game in his three game cameo with the Miami Heat prior to the NBA shutdown. And just for good measure, Waiters averaged nearly two steals a game in his sophomore season at the top of the zone.

Fizz Four: Rivalries #1 – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Unsworth)

After a long wait, Syracuse basketball’s biggest rival is here. And it’s probably what everyone expected. Duke did have a chance, but there were too many games the Blue Devils won by 10-plus points. So here we go.

Syracuse and Georgetown have a storied history. They are the two titans of the original Big East, both with long-tenured head coaches, All-Americans, and many memorable matchups. No longtime SU fan can forget John Thompson saying “Manley Field house is officially closed” after the Hoyas beat the Orange in Syracuse’s last game at the old venue. Or Thompson picking up three technical fouls in succession in 1990. Thompson (and then his son John Thompson III) going at it with Jim Boeheim year after year made that rivalry as intense as it was.

During the years of those heated Big East battles, both programs have also had superstar after superstar. Patrick Ewing was the face of the Hoyas in the 80s, followed up by Dikembe Mutumbo and Alonzo Mourning. SU had Pearl Washington, Rony Seikaly, and Sherman Douglas, then later Derrick Coleman and Billy Owens. Allen Iverson electrified the Big East from 1994-96, and Carmelo Anthony did the same in 2003. However, since the end of the conference, both teams have fallen off in terms of producing NBA players. Syracuse only has six players in the Association, and Jeff Green and Otto Porter are the only two Hoyas with NBA teams.

Speaking of Otto Porter, anyone remember this?

My Two Cents: Abell, Creek Exact Touch of Revenge on Syracuse for 2013 Beatdown (SI; Brew)

It was 2,662 days ago, a late weeknight in March of 2013, at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C. Syracuse had just upset No. 1-seeded Indiana 61-50 in the regional semifinals, and it's not a stretch to say that it changed the basketball world as we know it for many, many people.

I've written thousands and thousands of words through the years on what that loss meant to Tom Crean and the Indiana basketball program. That defeat, quite simply, changed the dialogue and the perception of Crean. He never really recovered from that missed opportunity with a loaded Hoosiers team and — as we all know far too well — the Indiana basketball program still hasn't recovered from it either, more than seven years later.

For Remy Abell and Maurice Creek, the loss to Syracuse that night was much more personal. For both of them, it was the very last time that they wore an Indiana jersey. Their IU careers ended that night, with both of them transferring soon thereafter, Abell to Xavier and Creek to George Washington.

The pained faces that night still hurt.

There is no way to balance out the pain of that 2013 loss, but Abell and Creek exacted a touch of revenge on Saturday in The Basketball Tournament (TBT).

They have been the low-seed darlings of this tournament so far with a team called Sideline Cancer. They've pulled off three upsets in a row, and that includes a big-time beatdown in the quarterfinals against Boeheim's Army, a Syracuse-based team. Creek scored 22 points and Abell had 12 in the 65-48 win.

Syracuse Hoopsters Boogied Down With Boogie Down Boys & Handsome Ty At Hip-Hop Concerts In 90s - The Gangster Report (gangsterreport.com; Burnstein)

The NCAA and DEA contacted the Syracuse University basketball program back in the early 1990s because of players attending social events hosted by local drug kingpin Tyrone (Handsome Ty) Hines and his Boogie Down Boys crew, according to federal records. Hines often commandeered The Gardenia nightclub near campus on the weekends transforming it into his own personal playground and bringing in hip-hop acts like L.L. Cool J, Public Enemy, KRS-One, Heavy D and Eric B & Rakim to perform to wall-to-wall crowds. Syracuse hoopsters and other university athletes, would get VIP treatment at the concerts, per documents related to Operation Boogie Down.

The 54-year old Hines did more than two and a half decades behind bars on a narcotics conspiracy conviction. He was originally sentenced to life in prison in 1995, but President Trump’s First Step Act – offering sentencing relief to non-violent offenders – got him out after 26 years last November. Hines did an interview with Syracuse.com last week for a feature story on his rise, fall and redemption.

Prosecutors made note of the Boogie Down Boys’ reputation for non-violence in a memo to U.S. District Judge Frederick Sullivan in Hines’ case requesting that he not be hit with a sentence of natural life. The plea for mercy fell on deaf ears.

While locked up, Hines used his time productively, penning four books, organizing social-activism endeavors from his cell and helping other inmates with their cases and causes. Today, Hines humbly works maintenance at a hotel.

No State Fair? No worries! How to make smoked turkey legs at home (PS; Miller)

Heart Attack Corner has become one of the most popular spots at the New York State Fair. It’s that unhealthy hangout at the front of the air-conditioned Eatery Building where you can find gold- and-chocolate-covered bacon, the piggy frito pie and a double bacon cheeseburger with hot mac & cheese.

It’s also home to the smoked turkey legs at the Country Corner stand. This 18-20 ounces of meat on a bone spends hours in a cooker before it becomes your portable meal. At $10, it’s a large portion for a reasonable price. It’s a great option for those following a keto diet or a heavy-salt diet. I scraped clean at least five of these at last year’s Fair.

Leah Reeves, of Liverpool, has been running Country Corner with her family for 41 years. The turkey leg is among their most popular items. It’s similar to the giant drumsticks you’ll find at Disney World. The Reeves family arrives at the Fairgrounds before sunrise to start cooking everything fresh for that day.

“The quality of food on the first day should be the same quality of food on the last day,” Leah said. “It’s all about getting good ingredients and cooking it right.”

That Indiana article was pretty humorous to read because it shows how sad that program has gotten. I guess that’s not unexpected from a program that gives out rings for making the Sweet 16.
