Who will lead Syracuse basketball in scoring in 2020-21? - The Juice Online (the juice; Cheng)

Syracuse will return four of its five starters in the 2020-21 season, but the one starter who has left, Elijah Hughes, was SU’s leading scorer at 19.0 ppg. Now that Hughes is gone, who is set to take over as Syracuse’s top gun?

Alan Griffin: Griffin would be the most logical choice to take over as Syracuse’s leading scorer. He possesses a similar skill set to the now departed Elijah Hughes, and per minute, was as effective. In just 18.4 minutes per game with Illinois, Griffin scored 8.9 points on 48.5 percent shooting from the field and 41.9 percent from downtown, and added 4.5 rebounds.

He was expected to have immediate eligibility after the NCAA was considering waiving the one year redshirt requirement for transfers, but in May, the NCAA decided to punt until the 2021 season. Griffin put in for a hardship waiver, which given COVID-19, would make geographical sense since he’s from nearby Ossining. But there’s no guarantee that the waiver will be granted. If not, that puts Syracuse’s scoring situation in more flux.

Buddy Boeheim: Boeheim took a big leap forward in his sophomore season, raising his scoring average from 6.8 points as a freshman to 15.3 points in his second year. He also shot 37.0 percent from downtown, establishing himself as one of the ACC’s top marksmen. Boeheim was the team’s second leading scorer, and with Hughes gone and Griffin’s status in limbo, he might step into the leading role. Of note, Boeheim diversified his scoring skill set. As a freshman, he took 70.3 percent of his shots from beyond the arc, but as a sophomore, that was down to 60.4 percent.

Joseph Girard III: New York State’s all-time leading scorer in high school was trust into the starting point guard role early in the season, and responded with a solid freshman campaign, finishing third on the team in scoring at 12.4 ppg. With a full season of experience under his belt, Girard is poised to take a similar step forward that Boeheim did from his first to second years. He’ll need to improve on the 35.0 percent he shot in the field to do so. If Griffin is required to sit out a year, Girard could challenge Boeheim as the team’s top scorer.

Syracuse basketball begins workouts with coaches (cnyhomepage.com; video; Infanti)

Per NCAA rules, Monday July 20th marked the first time college basketball teams could begin workouts as a full team. Prior to that date, it was all voluntary workouts.

NewsChannel 9 spoke Syracuse Assistant Coach Allen Griffin about the first day of workouts. Teams can either workout or do weight training during this time.

Notes from the conversation:

  • Jess Edwards is still in the Netherlands but the team expects him back in a week or so
  • Quincy Guerrier is still working back from his offseason groin surgery. He is not participating in live drills yet
  • For now workouts are contained to positions – sophomore Joe Girard III, junior Buddy Boeheim and Illinois transfer junior Alan Griffin began working with the guards; senior Marek Dolezaj, redshirt sophomore Robert Braswell, freshman Woody Newton, freshman Kadary Richmond and sophomore Quincy Guerrier(when healthy) are with the forwards; senior Bourama Sidibe, redshirt freshman John Bol Ajak, freshman Frank Anselem and sophomore Jesse Edwards(when he arrives) are with the centers
  • Coach Griffin feels Sidibe has added about 15 pounds of muscle
  • Coach Griffin felt Girard III and Boeheim were in great shape, almost looked game ready
  • Coach Griffin categorized Alan Griffin as a “relentless worker”

Listen to Locked On Syracuse - Daily Podcast On Syracuse Orange Football & Basketball on TuneIn (tunein.com; podcast; Locked on Syracuse)

Tim Leonard and Tyler Aki discuss the Orange getting out ahead on their 2023 basketball recruiting class after offering elite 2023 Canadian wing Elijah Fisher. What is this longterm recruiting battle going to look like and why there are new external factors to keep in mind with his recruitment. Plus, Justin Lamson's season has been pushed to 2021. Could the pandemic lead to a lot more parity in college football because of an unorthodox recruiting cycle?

SU Top 100: #74 Jim Boeheim – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Gross)

If this were a list of the most important human beings in Syracuse Athletics history, he would be No. 1. Instead, this is a top-100 athletes list, and Jim Boeheim comes in at #74.

As a staff, we were torn on Boeheim’s placement.

ICYMI: @TylerAki_ reveals who he chose as in the SU Top-100 Athletes list. It's not who comes to mind.

He came to SU’s campus in 1962, with freshman roommate Dave Bing, and successfully walked on to the basketball team. Syracuse was coming off a 2-22 season. Boeheim still turned down a partial scholarship from Colgate. Even back then, Jim was wearing glasses.

Of course this is impacted by seeding (if you win your first round you can't be less than .500), but it's still impressive that the ACC duo of Duke and UNC are the top two...

By the way (in case you're interested), the next highest ACC teams in terms of all-time NCAA Tournament win percentages are:

Louisville Cardinals: 76-44 (.633)
Syracuse Orange: 68-40 (.630)
Virginia Cavaliers: 35-22 (.614)

Spectrum seeks permission to impose data caps, breaking merger promise (PS; Weiner)

Spectrum has asked federal regulators to lift some conditions of its 2016 merger deal with Timer Warner Cable, allowing the company to impose data caps and raise prices next year on some broadband customers.

Spectrum’s parent company, Charter Communications, said it should no longer be prohibited from limiting the amount of data consumers can use, or charging internet customers based on their data usage.

Spectrum and Charter – New York’s biggest cable company – also asked the Federal Communications Commission to lift a merger condition that prevents the company from charging streaming video providers such as Netflix to access its system.

In a petition to the FCC, Spectrum Charter last month asked for regulators to lift those merger conditions two years early, on May 18, 2021.

A lot of hype about Kadary being a major contributor at PG but I'm confused about him practicing with the forwards. Does the staff not see him as a PG prospect? Griffin practicing with the guards says to me that he will be in the guard rotation not Kadary...

I added the ranks of all ACC teams with winning records in March Madness, so I figure I should post it here as well:

17. Louisville Cardinals: 76-44 (.633)
19. Syracuse Orange: 68-40 (.630)
23. Virginia Cavaliers: 35-22 (.614)
31. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets: 23-16 (.590)
34. N.C. State Wolfpack: 37-26 (.587)
45. Florida State Seminoles: 21-17 (.553)
49. Wake Forest Demon Deacons: 28-23 (.549)
51. Boston College Eagles: 22-19 (.537)

Three in the top 25 - not bad!
