Welcome to Eat a Hoagie Day!

National Eat a Hoagie Day on September 14th promotes a sandwich which is also known as a grinder, sub or hero. You can also order a po’boy, torpedo or an Italian sandwich to celebrate!

The hoagie consists of meats, cheeses, vegetables, sauces and seasonings on a long roll of Italian or French bread.

However, the origin of this giant sandwich is a bit of mystery. The epicenter of the controversy seems to be eastern Pennsylvania between the DiCostanzas and DePalmas. Both lay claim to being the first to make the hoagie. One family claims to have been making the sandwich since 1923 and the other since 1925. But who has the proof?

Another story from the Philadelphia area takes place during World War I. It describes shipyard workers bringing large Italian sandwiches to work wrapped in newspaper. The large sandwiches helped the workers through their long, grueling workdays. In fact, the workers nicknamed the massive sandwiches “hoggies” because anyone eating them at one sitting would have to be a hog. The Philadelphia accent explains the transformation of the word. The dialect often exaggerate the vowel sounds changing “hoggies” to “hoagies” quite easily.

Peel It Back Podcast: Episode 1 (SI; video; Davis)

Hello and welcome to the first episode of the Peel it Back podcast! This podcast was created to bring insight into Syracuse Orange basketball as well as other sports around campus. My name is Tawny Davis and my co-host is Maya Lockett and we are both broadcast and digital journalism grad students with a sports media emphasis. In today’s show we dove into some much talked about topics for you to enjoy.

Our first topic follows Syracuse football’s loss to UNC on Saturday 31-6. We talked about how the Orangemen have to bounce back after this and how Covid-19 effects both this game as well as the rest of this season.

The next topic is about the void that is being left behind by last years star Elijah Hughes who has declared for the NBA Draft. We discuss how the returning players need to step up this year as well as is there any player that can fill that void.

Our final topic is based around Olympic sports and the impact they could face because of the pandemic. We go even further and talk about how the teams could possibly lose funding because of lack of fans at football games this year.

Syracuse Basketball: Dior Johnson will let you know about a reclassify (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball 2022 commit Dior Johnson continues to deliver gems on social media, this one about his potential reclassify to the 2021 class.

Syracuse basketball 2022 commit Dior Johnson, a five-star point guard who is rated as the No. 3 player nationally in his class according to 247Sports, is a lot of fun to follow on Twitter, as we’ve documented in the past.

He’s candid, he’s humble, he’s confident, and he doesn’t put up with non-sense. When word broke in early July that the 6-foot-3 Johnson was seriously considering a potential reclassification to 2021, that definitely got social-media channels buzzing, without question.

For the Orange, there are pluses and minuses to him staying in the 2022 class versus moving up to the 2021 recruiting cycle. But for now, people need to chill out and stop trying to get an answer out of Johnson about a possible reclassify.

Hopefully, Syracuse basketball stays contender for 4-star Roddy Gayle Jr. (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball looks to remain a suitor for 2022 four-star guard Roddy Gayle Jr. as he plans to come out with a list soon.

Syracuse basketball offered a scholarship to 2022 four-star guard Roddy Gayle Jr. last November, and the top-30 prospect in his recruiting cycle according to 247Sports has continued on as a high-priority target for the Orange in this class.

The 6-foot-5 Gayle, a junior at Lewiston-Porter High School in Youngstown, N.Y., which is about a three-hour drive from the ‘Cuse campus, is reportedly coming out with a list of contenders “pretty soon,” per a 247Sports report.

He holds more than 20 offers, according to a review of the primary recruiting services, and hopefully when Gayle reveals a list, Syracuse basketball will make the cut. My gut tells me that the Orange will.

Within Gayle’s bio on the 247Sports Web site, the ‘Cuse is the only school listed as “warm,” which is an encouraging sign, although it guarantees nothing as his recruiting presses forward.

This tweet from mid-August read, “2022 four-star Roddy Gayle Jr. tells me he’s being prioritized by Syracuse, Ohio State, Marquette, & Pittsburgh. Top-30 Prospect.”

Syracuse basketball secured an engagement from five-star playmaker Dior Johnson in 2022 last February, and Orange has made Chance Westry, a four-star guard in this recruiting cycle, a high priority target for some time. now.

Could Johnson and Westry go head to head in the next high school season? 6-foot-3 Johnson, who is nationally No. 3 in the 2022 class according to 247Sports, recently had fun with the topic on social media, Tweeter “Oak Hill Vs Sierra Canyon… people need it.”

Now, for background, Johnson is a junior at Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Virginia. The same goes for Zion Cruz, a 2022 five-star guard who is also a prime target for Syracuse basketball in this recruiting round. .
