Welcome to National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day!

A day that will live in infamy...

On the morning of December 7, 1941, Japan launched a surprise attack on Naval Station Pearl Harbor, located in Honolulu, Hawaii, on the island of Oahu. National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day remembers and honors the 2,403 citizens of the United States who lost their lives there that day. Veterans and citizens have commemorated the anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor since it took place, but the day became an official observance when Congress designated the day with a joint resolution on October 3, 1984. The resolution authorized and requested the President to issue a proclamation calling upon the people of the United States "to observe this solemn occasion with appropriate ceremonies and activities" and "to pledge eternal vigilance and strong resolve to defend this Nation and its allies from all future aggression." Accordingly, President Ronald Reagan issued Proclamation 5286 on December 4, 1984. Subsequent Congresses and presidents have passed resolutions and issued proclamations for the day. On the day, flags are flown at half-staff until sunset to honor those who died from the attacks. Events, including a commemoration ceremony, are held at the Pearl Harbor National Memorial.

Rutgers will be SU's first ranked opponent this season; is the Orange ready? (PS; $; Waters)

While Syracuse University students enter final exams week, the Syracuse men’s basketball team is about to take its first big test of the season.

Syracuse has played three games thus far and, despite a huge scare from Bryant in the season-opener, has won all three.

But the Orange is about to take a huge step up in the level of competition.

After starting off the season with home games against Bryant, Niagara and Rider, the Orange will hit the road this coming week for games at No. 24 Rutgers and ACC rival Boston College.

None of Syracuse’s first three weeks are in the top 250 teams in noted statistician Ken Pomeroy’s ratings. Rutgers? The Scarlet Knights (3-0) are currently at No. 31 on KenPom.com.

Rutgers is off to a 3-0 start with wins over Sacred Heart, Fairleigh Dickinson and Hofstra. The

Scarlet Knights have three starters back from a team that went 20-11 last season and was in line for the school’s first NCAA tournament bid since 1991.

Buddy Boeheim, on Covid contact pause, should return to his Syracuse basketball team next week (PS; $; Ditota)

Buddy Boeheim watched his team dominate Rider 87-52 Saturday night from his family’s home in DeWitt.

There, he is serving a 14-day coronavirus quarantine mandated by New York State. Boeheim was deemed a close contact to the Orange walk-on who tested positive for Covid-19 last week. It was Boeheim’s second basketball pause of the season. The first time, the entire Syracuse team had to end all basketball activity and wait 14 days before restarting its season.

This time, Onondaga County and the state gave SU permission to use its wearable distance-measuring devices in contact tracing. Those devices determined Boeheim stood near the person who tested positive for more than 10 minutes but fewer than 15 minutes, Jim Boeheim said last week.

Thus, more basketball banishment for Buddy Boeheim.

Jim Boeheim said Saturday night that his son could return to the team by Thursday, after his quarantine concludes. The Orange plays at Rutgers on Tuesday in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, which means Buddy Boeheim won’t travel to New Jersey or play in that contest.

Jim Boeheim: 1 Syracuse backup stands out ahead of Rutgers game (247sports.com; Bailey)

Syracuse basketball's depth hasn't been tested in its first two contests without Buddy Boeheim and Bourama Sidibe. The Orange rolled to a 75-45 win against Niagara on Thursday before running away from Rider early on Saturday and cruising to an 82-57 victory. That's likely to change on Tuesday.

In what's expected to be SU's final game before Boeheim returns from quarantine, SU hits the road on Tuesday to face No. 24 Rutgers (3-0) in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge at 9:30 p.m. Head coach Jim Boeheim knows what that means: his inexperienced handful of reserves will be forced into extended meaningful minutes for the first time.

When asked about his confidence level in the group after the Rider game, Jim Boeheim pointed to freshman forward Woody Newton as the standout.

"I think Woody's really stepped up," Boeheim said. "I like what he's done. I really do. I think everybody else it's a little bit of work to do. I was actually encouraged with Frank (Anselem's) last five minutes. He was good. He was active. He moved. I think (John) Bol (Ajak) moved well.

"But we've got a lot of work to do there and obviously playing a top-20 team, Rutgers on the road, they're a really good team. They would've been a tournament team last year and they look like a tournament team this year so it's a different ballgame. But we've got a couple of games under our belt and that's helped us."

The 6-foot-8 Newton arrived in Central New York this summer as a four-star recruit, slotted as the No. 141 overall prospects in the Class of 2020 by the 247Sports Composite. Over the last two games, Boeheim said Newton has outperformed his practice play, racking up 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting to go with 13 rebounds and a pair of steals. Newton came out against Rider and made three consecutive three-pointers, helping the Orange tie its program record for makes in a game with 15.

Five Takeaways from Syracuse's Win Over Rider (SI; McAllister)

1. Richmond Continues to do Everything

Kadary Richmond was spectacular in his first start against Niagara. He did not have the same type of performance against Rider, but still had a significant impact on the game by doing a little bit of everything. Richmond scored just seven points, but also had seven rebounds, six assists, three steals and a block. Richmond looks to set up his teammates for good looks, can get into the lane, and is really good already at the top of the zone. If Syracuse is going to pull the upset at Rutgers, they will need Richmond to have a similar performance on both ends.

2. Newton is a Better Shooter Than I Thought

The last two wins for Syracuse have come in blowout fashion. They have allowed Woody Newton to see extended minutes, and he has taken full advantage. Newton has scored nine points in each of the last two games, and made four of his six three point attempts overall. That includes a three for four performance against Rider. Coming to Syracuse, Newton was known as more of a combo forward who could slash and make plays in the lane. However, in his first two games at Syracuse, he has shown he can really shoot it as well. He also led Syracuse in rebounding against Rider, and had two steals and two blocks against Niagara. Newton is making a case for Boeheim to play him for the rest of the season, and may have passed Braswell in the rotation.

Syracuse basketball prioritizing four-star Kamari Lands, who likes the zone (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball is one of three teams prioritizing 2022 four-star wing Kamari Lands.

The 2022 recruiting cycle is absolutely loaded, and one of the top players in the class, Kamari Lands, is getting prioritized by Syracuse basketball, along with former Big East Conference rivals Georgetown and Marquette, according to a 247Sports report.

The Hoyas? Really? All kidding aside, Lands is a talented wing with tremendous potential. He is a four-star prospect and top-60 player nationally in the 2022 class who is ranked as high as No. 22 overall in this cycle by ESPN.

We penned a recent column on Lands in which he had said in an interview with Zach Schumaker that while his recruitment remains quite open, the big-guard mentality within the Orange system is appealing to him.

Lands, a junior at Prolific Prep in Napa Valley, Calif., cited in that interview that he grew up a fan of Syracuse basketball and former Orange stars such as Michael Carter-Williams, a point guard with great length who helped guide the ‘Cuse to the 2013 Final Four.

Recruiting services indicate that Lands presently holds scholarship offers from Syracuse basketball, Georgetown, Marquette, Texas Tech, Xavier, DePaul and Miami (Ohio). He has also received interest from other high-majors such as Louisville, Indiana and Wisconsin.

Syracuse basketball seems in solid shape with 2022 four-star wing Kamari Lands.

The 6-foot-8 Lands has said that he wants to attend a college where he can play his game and serve as a lead guard, and that could possibly entail point guard or shooting guard. Some of the recruiting services, though, also list him as a small forward.

1950: The time a Syracuse movie theater gave away a real-life lion cub (PS; $; Croyle)

History is full of bad ideas.

This story, from Syracuse in 1950, is one of them.

On Oct. 25, 1950, the RKO Keith’s theater had its premiere of the film “Mad Wednesday,” starring comic legend Harold Lloyd.

In the movie, Lloyd plays Harold Diddlebock, hero of his classic silent film “The Freshman.” In this sequel, Diddlebock is a middle-aged bookkeeper whose “glory days” are behind him. After a drunken spree, the character goes on a “very strange and funny rampage” with a lion in tow.

RKO Lion

Harold Lloyd as Harold Diddlebock in 1950's "Mad Wednesday." The re-release needed some creative publicity in Syracuse like the raffling of a lion cub at the theater.

(Jackie the Lion is listed as one of the characters in IMDB.)

The film was first released in 1947 as “The Sin of Harold Diddlebock,” and was a dud at the box office and was quickly pulled from theaters.

Film producer Howard Hughes had some of the scenes reshot and re-released it as “Mad Wednesday” in 1950.

(The changes did not work, and the film again struggled to find an audience.)

Possibly sensing that they needed something to boost enthusiasm for the movie, the studio’s publicity pulled out all the stops to turn its premiere in Syracuse into a major event.
