Welcome to Nobel Prize Day!

The Nobel Prizes, considered by many to be the most prestigious awards in the world, are conferred today at the Nobel Prize Award Ceremonies, on what is known as Nobel Prize Day or The Nobel Day. Nobel Prizes are given out in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature, economics, and peace. All but the prize in economics were stipulated in Alfred Nobel's will and began being awarded in 1901. The economics prize, known officially as the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel, began being awarded in 1969. It technically is not a Nobel Prize but is associated with them. All of the prizes must be awarded to individuals, except for the Nobel Peace Prize, which can be awarded to an institution or an individual. Nobel Prizes can be awarded to one person or can be shared by two or three people.

College basketball: Buddy Boeheim expected to be back in SU lineup for ACC opener (nny460.com; St Croix)

The Syracuse University men’s basketball team is expected to have junior Buddy Boeheim back in the lineup for its Atlantic Coast Conference opener at 1 p.m. Saturday at Boston College.

Orange coach Jim Boeheim stated late Tuesday night during a zoom conference following SU’s 79-69 nonconference setback at Rutgers that he anticipated his son and starting shooting guard back on the floor for SU’s next practice.

Buddy Boeheim missed the last three games for Syracuse (3-1 overall) after being determined as a close contact to the one positive COVID-19 test in the program announced last Thursday. Five program members total have been out due to the positive case and subsequent contact tracing protocol.

“Buddy will be back by Saturday,” Jim Boeheim said. “He’s worked out every day, he’s lifted and run and done all the things. He’ll have two full days of practice with us Thursday and Friday, and he’ll be back. He’ll be ready but the time off hurts, no question about it.”

Buddy Boeheim has been quarantined in the Boeheim family home, according to Jim Boeheim, during his required isolation period.

Jim Boeheim: Defense was Syracuse's biggest issue at Rutgers (247sports.com; Bailey)

Syracuse basketball scrapped and clawed its way back from a 10-point halftime deficit only to watch No. 21 Rutgers seize the lead again with an 11-0 run down the stretch on Tuesday night. The Orange allowed the Scarlet Knights to shoot 57.7 percent from the field after the break, ultimately losing 79-69 in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge game at The RAC.

Speaking after the contest, SU head coach Jim Boeheim pointed to those defensive woes as the primary reason why his program dropped to 3-1 on the year. Rutgers got into the heart of Syracuse's 2-3 zone with dribble penetration and, down the stretch, attacked the rim before the Orange's back line could recover.

"I think our biggest problem is, defensively, we get screened or we're just not doing a good enough job at the front of the zone," Boeheim said. "And when they get in, the forwards are not doing a good job of helping Marek (Dolezaj) in the lane. Guys shouldn't be able to get layups and again that's on the forwards not being able to get in and help."

Kadary Richmond’s role expands versus Rutgers as Joe Girard III struggles (DO; Crane)

Jacob Young and Myles Johnson started to converge on Kadary Richmond as soon as Syracuse’s screen peeled away. It was almost the six-minute mark in the first half when the pair of Rutgers defenders thrust their arms in the air, pushing the Orange’s freshman point guard back near mid-court and forcing Richmond to pick up his dribble.

On the bench sat Joe Girard III, SU’s regular point guard, his hands clasped in his lap next to assistant coach Gerry McNamara. Richmond commanded SU’s offense for the fifth time against the Scarlet Knights, navigating the trap and threading a pass to John Bol Ajak underneath the basket. The pass led to a Woody Newton dunk, closing Syracuse’s early deficit to five.

For most of Syracuse’s first three games, it was Girard who dribbled the ball up the court, ran the offense in blowout wins and was whom head coach Jim Boeheim turned to late in games over Richmond. But as Tuesday night progressed — even after Girard peeled off his orange mask and jogged back toward the scorer’s table following his short rest — Richmond continued to bring the ball up, and Girard floated in an off-ball role.

No. 21 Rutgers turns up defense late for first win over SU in 17 years | Pickin' Splinters (pickinsplinters.com; Cifonelli)

Rutgers went on a 17-4 run over the final five and a half minutes to take down Syracuse, 79-69. It was Rutgers’ first win over the Orange since 2003. The Scarlet Knights’ run was led by Jacob Young and Myles Johnson, who finished with a double-double.

Rutgers’ defense forced the Orange into some bad shots late in the game, but Syracuse also forced up some tough looks early in the shot clock. When those shots went up and didn’t go in, a Scarlet Knight was there to grab the rebound and go the other way.

The start of the second half was all offense, as both teams were shooting over 70 percent for nearly the first six minutes of the half. It was Syracuse that settled in first in the half, as it went from down four to up three once the scoring pace settled down. Alan Griffin paced Syracuse in the second half with 15 points in the last 20 minutes.

Ron Harper Jr. stole the show in the first half for Rutgers, scoring the nets for 15 points in the frame on three makes from behind the arc. Rutgers led by 10 on two separate occasions, but Joe Girard III buried a three pointer with eight seconds left in the half to cut the Syracuse deficit to four heading into the break.

Syracuse Basketball: Orange needs to clean up these three things ASAP (itlh; Adler)

Head coach Jim Boeheim, though, did see some positives in the Syracuse basketball loss at Rutgers.

For the majority of its road contest versus No. 21 Rutgers on Tuesday night, Syracuse basketball found itself down, but not out. Sure, the Scarlet Knights managed to drum up a double-digit lead over the Orange here and there, but credit the ‘Cuse for hanging around.

Then, with about seven minutes to go in the second half of this ACC-Big Ten Challenge battle, Syracuse basketball squeaked ahead of Rutgers (4-0). This shocked and delighted me, along with numerous other Orange fans.

With about five minutes to go and the ‘Cuse clinging to a three-point edge, sophomore point guard Joe Girard III took a contested, slightly off-balance 3-pointer that didn’t go in, the Scarlet Knights would then go on a big-time run in the waning minutes, and Rutgers would send the Orange to a 79-69 defeat, the first setback of the 2020-21 campaign for Syracuse basketball.

Honestly, heading into this bout, the ‘Cuse faced an uphill climb due to the team missing two starters in senior center Bourama Sidibe and junior shooting guard Buddy Boeheim.

Dabbundo: SU crumbled against Rutgers, but late lead shows progress from 2019 (DO; Dabbundo)

When Rutgers opened up a 10-point lead in the opening 10 minutes against Syracuse, the flashbacks to last season’s nonconference SU blowouts seemed all too similar. The Orange struggled to handle ball pressure from Rutgers’ guards. They couldn’t match them on the glass.

But as the Orange rallied back and took a late second-half lead, they proved that they’ve already grown, despite the 79-69 loss.

Make no mistake: Syracuse threw away its only chance to impress the NCAA Tournament selection committee in nonconference play by melting down in the final five minutes at Rutgers on Tuesday night. The Scarlet Knights outexecuted the Orange, and Syracuse capitulated as the Knights ended the game on a 17-4 run. But five bad minutes don’t make a season.

“The last five minutes, it was a war,” Rutgers head coach Steve Pikiell said. “We had to drum up enough energy to get us through that five-minute mark.”

Alan Griffin Continues to Lead the way for the Orange (SI; Shoemaker)

For the first time since January 29, 2003 the Orange fell to the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. It has been seven years since the former Big East rivals last met. Syracuse’s 17-year win streak came to an end last night when Syracuse lost 79-69.

The Orange had no answer for Rutgers and their star guard Ron Harper Jr., who dropped 26 points and grabbed 7 boards in 38 minutes of action. Despite not being able to contain Harper Jr. there were several players who performed well for the Orange.

With Buddy Boeheim sidelined due to COVID-19 exposure and Joe Girard III struggling to score, other players have needed to step up in their absence. Sophomore Quincey Guerrier has been averaging 16.8 points and 9.3 rebounds in 31 minutes of action per game to start the season.

The Orange shot just 7-26 from beyond the arc against Rutgers, but Guerrier provided some spark hitting 3-5 of his attempts. Coach Boeheim has been giving Guerrier some big minutes as he is a big reason Syracuse has jumped out to a 3-1 start.

“Quincy, we’ve known that he can make threes. He showed tonight that he can do it in games,” Boeheim said.

Syracuse needs to improve their three-point shooting if they want to compete with the top ranked teams. They will need many of the young guns to step up until Buddy Boeheim and Bourama Sidibe return. Freshmen Kadary Richmond has shown he can definitely compete, averaging a solid 28 minutes on the floor per game.

Rutgers Basketball: 3 takeaways from marquee win over Syracuse (bustingbrackets.com; Zacher)

Rutgers Basketball claimed its first marquee victory of the season, defeating Syracuse in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

After dominating three mid-majors to begin their season, nationally-ranked Rutgers Basketball entered Tuesday’s showdown with Syracuse searching for a win over a power conference school – and they satisfied that need, securing a 79-69 victory over the Orange at The RAC.

To be truthful, this game was incredibly ugly – the ESPN2 commentators compared the second half to an AAU game, with 50 combined three-pointers being taken, 29 combined turnovers, and 33 fouls committed between both teams.

Despite the woes, this win was huge for a Rutgers team that is currently playing without Geo Baker, the team’s star point guard and last season’s returning second-leading scorer. Ranked 21st nationally, the Scarlet Knights battled back and forth with a Syracuse Orange squad that was also missing its best player in Buddy Boeheim.

After Syracuse held a 3-2 lead a few minutes into the game, the Scarlet Knights maintained a comfortable advantage – a lead between 4 to 10 points – until the Orange rallied to take a three-point lead with seven minutes left. It was all Rutgers from there, however, as Steve Pikiell’s squad embarked on a 21-8 run to end the game.

Just five Scarlet Knights scored in the win, and it was a career-day for Ron Harper Jr. – more on him in a bit. He led all scorers with 26 points while receiving help from Montez Mathis (19 points), Jacob Young (18), and Myles Johnson (11). Paul Mulcahy rounded out all Rutgers scorers with five points.

Auburn’s Prison City Brewing opens big new brewhouse. That means more beer (PS; $; Cazentre)

Now, there will be mass amounts of Mass Riot.

Auburn’s Prison City Brewing, which has won local acclaim and national recognition since it opened its downtown brewpub in December 2014, has opened a second location.

This new spot at 251 North St. has a 14,000-square-foot brewhouse and taproom, located on a 5-acre former farm. The brewhouse has a 20-barrel per batch system, four times the 5-barrel system at the brewpub downtown. (A barrel is 31 gallons).

The brewpub, at 28 State St., remains open as a full-service bar and restaurant, with the small-batch “pilot” brewhouse.

“Right now, this is all about increasing production,” said Marc Schulz, who owns Prison City with his wife, Dawn. “We can make and sell more beer.”

That would include Mass Riot, a hazy New England-style IPA that has earned Prison City awards and medals from national publications and beer festivals.

“We sell 14 (packs of Mass Riot) for one of everything else,” Schulz said.

But there are plenty of others: The North Street taproom beer list this week had 16 beers, including at least five New England IPAs, plus offerings of lager, pilsners, pale ale, sour, stout and more. They’re available for on-premises drinking (under current restrictions), draft to-go in growlers or 4-pack cans — and there is curbside pick-up.

A batch of Wham Whams, a sweet Imperial Stout made with toasted coconut and vanilla, was in production this week. It won the Governor’s Cup as best beer in New York state in 2019.

Though there’s a kitchen, food is limited to small plates in the new taproom.
