Welcome to Arabic Language Day!

Arabic (العربية) is a Semitic language, like Hebrew and Aramaic. Around 260 million people use it as their first language. Many more people can also understand it as a second language. It is written with the Arabic alphabet, which is written from right to left, like Hebrew. Since it is so widely spoken throughout the world, it is one of the six official languages of the UN, the others being English, French, Spanish, Russian and Chinese.

https://www.syracuse.com/orangebasketball/2020/12/alan-griffin-struggled-against-northeastern-jim-boeheim-explained-what-happened.html (PS; $; Ditota)

Alan Griffin played 24 minutes in Syracuse’s win over Northeastern Wednesday in the Carrier Dome.

He took four shots, three of them from the 3-point line. He missed all of them.

And while missing shots comes with the basketball territory, Griffin’s sins in the eyes of his coach had more to do with lack of effort and a kind of all-enveloping brooding that Jim Boeheim found distasteful.

“I’m really disappointed with Alan,” Boeheim said during his post-game remarks. “Alan had five or six opportunities when we were running stuff that he could have gone right to the boards and gotten an easy tip and he just stood. He was standing on the 3-point line. He stood and watched the whole game on both ends of the court. I can’t even tell you the defensive mistakes. There were too many to count. When you aren’t playing offense and you’re not playing defense, it’s just not good.”

Syracuse Basketball: Quincy Guerrier is a ‘monster down low,’ coach says (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball forward Quincy Guerrier is competing like an All-ACC player.

Coming into the 2020-21 campaign, Syracuse basketball coaches and national pundits felt that forward Quincy Guerrier was primed for a break-out sophomore year.

So far, the 6-foot-7, 220-pound Guerrier is proving those prognostications correct, as he is among the Atlantic Coast Conference leaders in scoring, rebounding and field-goal shooting to date in the young 2020-21 term.

On Wednesday afternoon inside the Carrier Dome, the Orange connected on an absolutely dreadful clip from the field and beyond the arc against a scrappy Northeastern team in a non-conference duel.

Guerrier, who this season is imposing his will on defenders in the paint, registered a double-double of 18 points and 16 rebounds versus the Huskies, providing a much-needed spark to the ‘Cuse roster as Syracuse basketball (5-1) squeaked by Northeastern, 62-56.

After this contest, head coach Jim Boeheim said in a Zoom call with media members that Guerrier has played well since the beginning of the 2020-21 stanza.

He’s a “monster down low,” Boeheim said in praising Guerrier, while adding that his sophomore forward is relying on physicality in the paint, has good instincts around the basket, and takes advantage of the fact that he’s usually stronger than his defenders.

3 takeaways from Syracuse's 62-56 win over Northeastern - The Juice Online (the juice; Gustin)

Syracuse outlasted Northeastern on Wednesday afternoon, coming out on top 62-56. It was by no means a pretty win, but Syracuse improved to 5-1 on the year.

“In Division 1 basketball, a win is a win,” Orange guard Joe Girard III said. “At the same time we have to get better, but we feel a lot better than if we walked out of here with a loss.”

In this ill-favored win for Syracuse, here are our key takeaways:

Living and dying by the 3 can sometimes be ugly

Syracuse was coming off one of its best games of the season, hitting 16 of 31 from beyond the arc in a rare ACC rout of Boston College. But SU shot 2-18 just from 3 against Northeastern, and seemed lost when they could not get it going from deep.

In particular, two of SU’s top guns from the win over the Eagles were noticably cold against the Huskies. Alan Griffin was 6-9 from distance for a team-high 22 points, while Buddy Boeheim was 3-8 from downtown for 17 points. The two shot a combined 1-16 on Wednesday for 2 points as Griffin, SU’s leading scorer, was held scoreless for the first time this year.

Northeastern coach proud of effort in upset bid at Syracuse (247sports.com; Gunn)

Northeastern had one last chance to give Syracuse basketball a run for its money in the Carrier Dome on Wednesday.

With 52 seconds left and the Orange leading by five points, NU redshirt junior forward Greg Eboigbodin challenged a Joe Girard jumper late in the shot clock and freshman forward Coleman Stucke grabbed the rebound. Stuck passed the ball to freshman guard Jahmyl Telfort, but as he turned to bring the ball upcourt, he turned right into Girard, who was looking to draw a charge.

Telfort was called for a travel instead, and was incredulous that Girard wasn't whistled for a block. NU wouldn't get within a basket for SU down the stretch, ultimately losing 62-56.

“What I’m really proud of, for a young group, they really absorb the scouting report,” head coach Bill Coen said. “There were a couple of lapses in there, and when you play an opponent like Syracuse, if you don’t play it the right way, they’re really going to make you pay."

Multiple Syracuse basketball targets in top 60 of new ESPN 2022 rankings (itlh; Adler)

Let’s examine where Syracuse basketball 2022 prospects arrived in updated national ratings.

Syracuse basketball, even minus a verbal commitment from point guard Dior Johnson, is still going after some top-flight talents in the 2022 class.

ESPN recently published new national rankings for this cycle, and the recruiting service is focused on the top-60 players within the 2022 class.

Leading the way, at No. 4 overall, is Brandon Huntley-Hatfield. The power forward out of Scotland Campus in Scotland, Pa., recently landed a scholarship offer from the Orange and reportedly has the ‘Cuse among his half-dozen finalists, with the others being Auburn, Kansas, Ole Miss, Tennessee and Wake Forest.

At No. 9 is Jarace Walker, whom the Orange offered over the summer. Walker, a power forward, attends the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., along with Syracuse basketball 2021 commit Benny Williams.

For the moment, several other schools seem to be in better shape with Walker than the ‘Cuse, but the recruiting game is fluid, so we’ll see what happens.

Johnson, who verbally committed to the Orange this past February but more recently re-opened his recruiting process, checks in at No. 15. He presently goes to Corona Centennial High School in Corona, Calif.

Kamari Lands, out of Prolific Prep in Napa Valley, Calif., is No. 19. A recent report suggested that Lands is getting prioritized by Syracuse basketball, although I have also read on message boards that it’s a bit up in the air exactly how aggressively Orange coaches are pursuing the talented wing.

Huskies lose 62-56 to Syracuse in defensive battle - The Huntington News (huntnewsnu.com; Ryan)

A second half full of turnovers cost the men’s basketball team (1-2, 0-0 CAA) the game against Syracuse (5-1, 1-0 ACC) that struggled to score the basketball Wednesday afternoon in the Carrier Dome. The Orange were led by sophomores Quincy Guerrier, who finished with 18 points and 16 rebounds, and Joseph Girard III, who had 21 points and a game-high six steals.

The first half finished with Northeastern down by one point thanks to sweet shooting from freshmen forwards Coleman Stucke and Jahmyl Telfort, who led the Huskies with 16 points on the day. As a team, they made seven three-pointers in the first half and the alarm bells were sounding for a possible upset, but they could not overcome 21 turnovers and the loss of sophomore guard Tyson Walker, who exited the game injured with 18:32 to go.

“We mishandled the ball a little bit too much,” head coach Bill Coen said. “That defense is tough to crack, and they’re really good at it.”

(soundclud.com; podcast; Fizz Radio)

On this week's Fizz Radio, Gill Gross and Ian Unsworth discuss Syracuse's struggles against Northeastern, Dino Babers' Class of 2021 after NSD on Wednesday, and SU hoops' upcoming matchup with Buffalo.

‎ESPN Syracuse: On The Block On Demand 12-17 on Apple Podcasts (apple.com; radio; Axe)

Brent opens the show talking about Syracuse basketball's win over Northeastern, the struggles of the Orange and why he doesn't understand some Syracuse fan's complaints. Later, in H0T Takes, Brent talks about the College Football Playoff, how the committee is getting it wrong, and why the system already needs change.

ACC Roundup - Pitt, Syracuse Win, But Injuries Are Killing Miami (DBR; King)

In Wednesday’s ACC Action, Syracuse survived Northeastern 62-56 and Pitt handled Miami 70-55.

In fairness to Miami, the ‘Canes have major injury issues and lost Matt Cross during the game and Isaiah Wong apparently had cramps.

They did get a break with the NCAA transfer rule as that allowed Elijah Olaniyi, a transfer from Stony Brook, to suit up.

Ithiel Horton had 18 while Au’Diese Toney had 15.

More importantly, you can start to see the vision that Jeff Capel has for his team. It’s full of good, solid athletic players who can run and press. He doesn’t necessarily have great shooters right now but Pitt still hit 7-17 from deep.

We weren’t surprised that Syracuse had a tough time with Northeastern. They're in a smaller conference - the Colonial - but they’ve been dangerous for years.

They managed to shut down Buddy Boeheim and Allen Griffin, holding them to just two points between them - and that was the first basket of the game by Boeheim. After the game, head coach Jim Boeheim ripped newcomer Griffin, saying “stood and watched” and that he is “way too good” to do that.

Fortunately for Syracuse, Quincy Guerrier and Joe Girard produced. Guerrier had 18 points and 16 boards while Girard had 21 although he didn’t shoot well: he hit just 2-9 from deep and 5-16 overall.

ACC Basketball Power Rankings as of Dec. 17 (247sports.com; Howe)

With conference play now slightly underway in the ACC, 10 teams have played one conference game as of December 17. In the coming weeks, conference play will become exclusive and the ACC teams will really start to separate themselves in the weekly power rankings.

In the latest AP Top 25 Poll, the ACC has six ranked teams with Florida State the highest at No. 15. Virginia, Duke, North Carolina, Louisville and Clemson are also all ranked.

There were no major upsets during this week's games within the ACC, but there were some good matchups. Virginia Tech took down No. 24 Clemson at home by a score of 66-60 while Pitt beat a shorthanded Miami team by a score of 70-55.

Every Thursday, 247Sports will release an updated version of the ACC's power rankings. Check out the second edition of the rankings below.

15. WAKE FOREST DEMON DEACONS (2-0)
Since their 2-0 start, COVID-19 has run through the Wake Forest program like wildfire, forcing cancelations and postponements for the Demon Deacons. As of now, Wake Forest will return to action on December 30 with a game at home against Syracuse.

14. BOSTON COLLEGE EAGLES (1-5) (0-1)
In their lone game of the week, Boston College was embarrassed by Syracuse at home, losing by a score of 101-63. Forward James Karnik led the Eagles with 20 points in the blowout loss. Boston College will look to snap their four-game losing streak with a win over Maine on Tuesday.

13. GEORGIA TECH YELLOW JACKETS (2-3) (0-1)
The Yellow Jackets played only once over the course of last week, losing to Florida State by a score of 74-61. Guard Michael Devoe scored a team-high 21 points in the loss. Georgia Tech has three games in the coming week against Florida A&M, Delaware State and UAB. They will begin a full slate of ACC games on 12/30 vs. North Carolina.

12. MIAMI HURRICANES (3-2) (0-1)
The Hurricanes had a disastrous week, losing to Florida Gulf Coast by a score of 66-62 and then to Pittsburgh by a score of 70-55. However, it should be noted that Miami was playing with only seven healthy scholarship players against the Panthers and forward Matt Cross left the game in the second half with an injury and did not return. This week, Miami only has one game against Jacksonville which should give them some time to get healthy before ACC play begins on 12/29 vs. Virginia Tech.

11. PITTSBURGH PANTHERS (5-1) (1-0)
Pitt beat a shorthanded Miami team in their first ACC game of the year, winning by a score of 70-55. The Panthers were led by Ithiel Horton, who scored 18 points in the win. Pittsburgh also took down Garnder Webb by a score of 67-50. Things get tougher for the Panthers moving forward as they have a pair of ranked foes coming up on their schedule in No. 23 Louisville and No. 21 Duke.

10. NOTRE DAME FIGHTING IRISH (2-3) (0-1)
The Fighting Irish pulled an upset over Kentucky by a score of 64-63 before losing their ACC opener vs. Duke, 75-65. Against Kentucky, forward Nate Laszewski led the team with 21 points and nine rebounds. Against the Blue Devils, guard Dane Goodwin scored 25 points in the loss. This week, Notre Dame will take on Purdue and Syracuse.

9. NC STATE WOLFPACK (3-0) (0-0)
A week ago, NC State had to pause all basketball activities because of a COVID-19 outbreak within their program. The Wolfpack did not play at all last week but appear ready to return to the court on Thursday night vs. Saint Louis. NC State's three wins on the season are against Charleston Southern, North Florida and UMass Lowell.

8. SYRACUSE ORANGE (5-1) (1-0)
The Orange won twice over the last week of play, beating Boston College and Northeastern. In their 101-63 blowout of Boston College, Allen Griffin scored 22 points and hauled in 10 rebounds. Syracuse will have two games before the next power rankings come out, both at home vs. Buffalo and Notre Dame.

‘The Ultimate Playlist of Noise’ trailer: First look at new movie filmed in Syracuse (PS; $; Herbert)

Hulu has released the first look at another new American High movie filmed in Syracuse.

“The Ultimate Playlist of Noise” stars Keean Johnson (”Euphoria,” “Alita: Battle Angel”) as Marcus, an audio obsessed high school senior who learns he must undergo brain surgery that will render him deaf. He decides to go on a road trip and, with help from a struggling musician named Wendy (”The Handmaid’s Tale” actress Madeline Brewer), record a bucket list of his favorite sounds before facing reality and his future without hearing.

“This is the last chance for me to hear what it sounds like to be alive!” Marcus tells his parents in the trailer, released Wednesday.

The film, written by Mitchell Winkie and directed by Bennett Lasseter, shot in late 2019 throughout Central New York. Scenes include the former A.V. Zogg Middle School (now Syracuse Studios) in Liverpool, Green Lakes State Park, The Gem Diner, The Westcott Theater, Onondaga Lake Parkway, and the former Lakeview Bowling Center. Brewer’s character was also seen being “hit” by a car for a scene in the village of Liverpool, and parts of downtown Syracuse were shot to look like New York City, including the NYC subway.
