Welcome to National Take Down the Christmas Tree Day!

It has brought warmth and cheer to your home over the holiday season, but all things must come to an end, and it's time to take down the Christmas tree. While some people may take it down on the day after Christmas, on New Year's Day, or the day after, there is some reasoning behind taking it down on January 6, on National Take Down the Christmas Tree Day. This date officially marks the end of the holiday season, as it is the last of the 12 days of Christmas, and is the day on which Epiphany takes place.

How to Observe

Take down your Christmas tree! The creator of the day, Jace Shoemaker-Galloway, has suggested making it into an event by inviting over family or friends to help you out and providing them with appetizers and cocktails. If you have a real tree, consider recycling it for wildlife.

SU basketball vs. Pittsburgh: What to know (PS; $; Waters)

When the 2020-21 college basketball season began, Syracuse and Pittsburgh were not supposed to play each other on Jan. 6 at the Carrier Dome.

Syracuse was scheduled to host Florida State. Pittsburgh had the date open. The rivals had two other games against each other on Jan. 16 and Feb. 13.

But in the year of Covid, everything is in a constant state of flux, including basketball schedules.

Syracuse’s game against Florida State had to be postponed due to a positive Covid test in the FSU program. The Orange already had its three previous games postponed, while Pitt had postponed its last two.

So on Wednesday at the odd time of 4:30 p.m., Syracuse (6-1 overall, 1-0 ACC) and Pittsburgh (5-2, 1-1) will face each other at the Dome.

Syracuse Orange v. Pittsburgh Panthers Prediction & Preview (1/6/21) - The Juice Online (the juice; Staff)

After a three game pause due to COVID-19 protocols, Syracuse returns to action on Wednesday, hosting Pittsburgh at 4:30 p.m. (TV: ACC Network). Ahead of the game, The Juice Online’s Sam Vescovi and Wes Cheng give their predictions below.

Sam Vescovi
Season Record: 0-0

Pitt hasn’t been known for shooting the ball well under head coach Jeff Capel. Instead, they have been focused on beating opponents off the dribble, then dishing the ball to the open man for a clean look.

In the early Capel era, few players could shoot with consistency. Last year, the Panthers shot just 29.6 percent from downtown. The year before that was only marginally better at 33.1 percent.

Capel upgraded the Panthers’ outside shooting in the offseason by courting transfers guards Ithiel Horton and Nike Sibande, and it’s paid off so far. Horton is shooting 40.9 percent through six games, while Sibande, since being ruled eligible, has hit two of his four 3s in two games.

Photos Suggest Pitt's Karim Coulibaly, Xavier Johnson, Au'Diese Toney, William Jeffress Will Play at Syracuse (pittsburghsportsnow; Michalowski)

Based on photos posted by the Pitt men’s basketball social media team, it appears as though Abdoul-Karim Coulibaly, Au’Diese Toney, William Jeffress, and Xavier Johnson will all be playing on Wednesday night when Pitt looks to improve its road record to 3-0 on the season at Syracuse.

On Monday afternoon, Pitt head coach Jeff Capel announced that in addition to Justin Champagnie, the Panthers would be without two players due to contact tracing within the program. Based on photos posted by the Pitt Men’s Basketball social media pages, it is safe to say that Coulibaly, Jeffress, Johnson, and Toney are not among those players that will sit out.

Syracuse basketball versus Pittsburgh could get ugly – first to 44 wins? (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball may prove a bit rusty on Wednesday against Pittsburgh.

Syracuse basketball will only have had a few full practices leading up to its Atlantic Coast Conference clash at home versus Pittsburgh on Wednesday in the late afternoon.

On the Panthers’ side, its roster is expected to be without several scholarship players inside the Carrier Dome, including excellent sophomore forward Justin Champagnie, per media reports.

So with a short-handed Pitt squad, and an Orange team that hasn’t competed in a game since mid-December, when it beat Buffalo in overtime, it wouldn’t surprise me if this conference contest is far from a thing of beauty.

As it is, over the years, these former Big East Conference rivals and current ACC foes have suited up in some quite physical encounters. Combining that physicality with what both the ‘Cuse and the Panthers (5-2) are dealing with may be a recipe for a low-scoring affair with a sizable amount of turnovers.

Then again, until these guys step out on the court, who knows what will happen. Much like other Syracuse basketball fanatics out there, I just want to see my beloved Orange (6-1) play an official game.

NC State loses at Clemson, 74-70 (backingthepack.com; Lower)

This is probably a basketball game that NC State should have won. Clemson was the Pack’s toughest opponent it has faced to this point, and a loss on the road to such a team is nothing to look too far into. A good team won a close game at home as it should, but it does leave you with a sour taste in your mouth knowing that this was there for the taking, and NC State simply passed.

The Pack was electric in the first half. It got good guard play, shot the three well, and took a 39-32 lead into the break. Clemson was decidedly the more locked-in team in the second half, but the Pack, largely at the free throw line, was able to weather that storm and cling to a single-digit lead right up until the final minute, when it melted down on its final two offensive possessions with a chance to salt the game away.

Up three, D.J. Funderburk took a silly contested mid-range shot, and the sequence that followed resulted in Clemson guard and B-list Marvel Universe character Nick Honor tying the game at 62 with a triple. On the ensuing possession, Devon Daniels tossed a terrible pass to the wrong team.

CNY golfing great Joe Tesori earns national honor (PS; $; Kramer)

Le Moyne College men’s golf coach Joe Tesori has earned one of the top honors in his sport.

Tesori has been named recipient of the PGA’s 2020 Labron Harris Sr. Award. That is given to the college or high school coach, and Class A PGA Professional, whose support of the game through teaching, coaching and involvement in the community has helped ensure the growth of the sport and represent the finest qualities it has to offer.

Tesori is in his 14th season at Le Moyne. During his time there, the Dolphins have been regular participants in the NCAA regional tournament, qualifying nine times during his tenure. The Dolphins achieved national recognition by advancing to the national finals in 2015 (Charlotte, 20th), 2016 (Denver,18th) and in 2017 (Orlando, narrowly missing match play and finishing a school-best 13th).

“I’m not usually speechless, but I was humbled and honored,” Tesori said in a statement. “We don’t do what we do in this business for awards. We do it for the student-athletes, our players, and the relationships. I immediately thought, what a wonderful thing for Le Moyne College. I thought of all of my current and former players and am so grateful for the chance I have had to coach at my alma mater.”
