Welcome to National Signing Day!

National Signing Day
has traditionally been the first day that a high school senior can sign a binding National Letter of Intent for a collegiate sport with a school that is a member of the United States National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

Although all NCAA sports have at least one National Signing Day, and most have two, college football’s is by far the most widely followed by fans and sports media.[citation needed] Traditionally, college football's National Signing Day is the first Wednesday of February.

As of 2017, college football also has an early signing period in late December, meaning recruits now have the opportunity to sign with their college team over a month before National Signing Day.[1] While many recruits utilize this early process, a significant number of the nation’s top-rated recruits opt to wait until February to sign with their teams, either because they have not yet made a decision or desire to announce their decision to the fanfare and media coverage typically reserved for National Signing Day.

Board men: How rebounding can play into Louisville's basketball clash at Syracuse (C-J; Russell)

Louisville men's basketball coach Chris Mack called Samuell Williamson's rebounding performance "terrific" after Monday's win over Georgia Tech, but the scope of those 18 boards could have used an even stronger adjective.

Williamson shattered a 49-year-old Louisville record for most rebounds by a non-starter, became the only Division I player in more than 11 years to grab at least 18 boards and score at least 20 points off the bench against a Power Five opponent, and amassed the most rebounds by a Cardinals player in a single game since Chane Behanan had 18 against Samford in 2012.

The colossal and dynamic – nay, radiant – performance was a testament to Williamson's impactful effort in 31 minutes of play.

Sullivan:With chip on his shoulder, U of L's Williamson comes off the bench with a bang in win

"When we get that type of production out of Sam, that can really bode well for our team. Not many guys get 18 rebounds that don’t play the power forward or center position," Mack said.

Now that Williamson has rocketed to new career highs, what is he capable of next? That's the million dollar question for a Louisville team (11-4, 6-3 ACC) that plays Syracuse (10-5, 4-4) at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Carrier Dome in New York.

Louisville looks to restore consistency vs. Syracuse (cbssports.com; FLM)

A bad four-game stretch knocked Louisville from the middle of the top-25 poll to out of the rankings.

But the Cardinals still remain in contention for the ACC regular-season title and seek a second straight win Wednesday night when they visit Syracuse, which is among several teams in the league thriving at home.

Louisville (11-4, 6-3 ACC) ascended to No. 16 when it won five straight games from Dec. 22 through Jan. 13, a stretch that included wins over Kentucky and Virginia Tech. After a 12-point win at Wake Forest, the Cardinals dropped three of four, falling to Miami, Florida State and Clemson while beating Duke and went from No. 16 to No. 25 and then out of the poll.

Despite the subpar stretch, the Cardinals are within striking distance of the conference lead and rebounded by posting a 74-58 home win over Georgia Tech on Monday. Louisville allowed 32.4 percent shooting from the field, a season low for an ACC game, and its strong defense allowed the Cardinals to win despite the team shooting only 38.9 percent.

Monday also was a nice rebound for David Johnson, who scored a career-high 24 points after being held to four against Clemson. Samuell Williamson added 20 points and 18 rebounds in a game where Louisville grabbed a season-high 56 rebounds.

"Over the course of 40 minutes, I thought our guys really competed," Cardinals coach Chris Mack said. "We got a lot of stops. We were connected on the defensive end. I thought it was one of our better efforts of the year."

Orange Watch: Don’t count on lineup change for Syracuse basketball - The Juice Online (The Juice; Bierman)

Item: If there’s one mark of consistency over Jim Boeheim’s career, it’s his towering presence over the complete look and feel of the program he built into a national champion. Close friends and coaching colleagues can offer advice, or even friendly contrasting views, but the media and the legion of ‘Cuse fanatics, well, that’s another matter.

Jim Boeheim simply does not want to hear the talk.

He clarified as much following Sunday night’s strong second-half showing to track down and defeat a watered-down North Carolina State team missing two starters, keyed by clamping down defensively (no second half Wolfpack treys), hitting key baskets off improved offensive flow (five players in double figures), and even hanging on to win for the first time this season when outrebounded (37-to-35).

Don’t ask Boeheim about how he distributes total number of minutes played for starting guards Joe Girard and son Buddy, with top reserve Kadary Richmond.

Even if Orange fans are burning through Tweets complaining about Richmond deserving more PT than Girard, and further incited when ACC Network analyst and former Notre Dame standout Jordan Cornette (the school’s all-time blocked shots leader from 2001-05) was using his platform in the game broadcast to loudly proclaim the same wish – give Richmond more minutes – Boeheim is going to roll out a starting lineup and handle game substitutions his way.

“We need all three guys to play and be effective,” Boeheim insisted when the subject was presented following the win over the Wolfpack. “I’m really sick of people thinking ‘well this guy should play, that guy should play.’ We need all three to play.”

Take that response to mean that the starters will remain the same, and perhaps Richmond is inserted (excluding unusual circumstances or foul trouble) into a game a little earlier than a minute or so before the 12:00 media timeout in each half. But no major changes.

Three weeks ago, Clemson’s game against North Carolina was postponed after a positive COVID-19 test in the Tigers program. Clemson hadn’t looked the same since.

The Tigers had an 11-day stretch between games and were destroyed by Virginia upon resuming. It was the start of what ended up being a 1-4 stretch.

After that Jan. 9 postponed game against UNC seemed to halt Clemson’s momentum, Brad Brownell is hopeful Tuesday’s win against the Tar Heels is the start of his team regaining it.

Clemson played arguably its best game of the season Tuesday night, defeating North Carolina 63-50. The win is Clemson’s third in four tries against UNC and was much-needed after Saturday’s 26-point loss at Duke.

“North Carolina’s been playing good basketball, and our guys were really ready. I thought we competed extremely hard,” Brownell said. “I’m just proud of the physicality with which our guys played. ... Big win for us and happy for my players.”

ACC Roundup: Wake Forest And UNC Lose On The Road (DBR; King)

Well you don’t see this every Wednesday: in the last two days, all four Big Four teams lost. Duke lost to Miami on Monday, NC State lost to Syracuse on Tuesday and on Wednesday, Wake Forest lost to Notre Dame and UNC fell at Clemson.

All four losses were on the road.

UNC had been playing much better recently until this game. You can imagine a Roy Williams team shooting 38 percent and you can imagine a Roy Williams team getting 17 turnovers.

It’s harder to imagine a Roy Williams team scoring just 50 points and even harder to imagine winning a game with all three underachieving stats.

We assumed that UNC’s inside game would be dominant but not so much: Armando Bacot had one point, three boards and four fouls. Garrison Brooks had nine boards and eight points but shot just 4-10. Day’Ron Sharpe came off the bench for 16 points and eight boards and shot 6-8.

Caleb Love struggled also hitting 2-10 and just 1-6 from behind the line.

Duke basketball: Why Blue Devils are still in great position (balldurham.com; McClure)

History tells us that it is not time to count out Duke basketball just yet.

It looked like the Duke basketball team had turned the corner after defeating Georgia Tech and beating the brakes off Clemson at home last week. However, right around the corner was a giant roadblock in the form of the Miami Hurricanes (7-10, 3-9 ACC).

The Blue Devils (7-6, 5-4 ACC) were far from deserving of victory in Monday night’s 77-75 loss on the road. They lacked energy, struggled with turnovers, and couldn’t guard a shadow.

Despite this bad loss, they are still in a great position.

There is no denying that the team’s latest defeat to Miami will be considered a bad loss. The majority of teams are unable to go through a season without suffering a bad loss. While the loss in Coral Gables certainly doesn’t help Duke’s chances, it is not a deathblow to tournament hopes.

The Blue Devils still have opportunities to gain quality wins as they have two games against North Carolina and a matchup at home against Virginia.

Duke is still 5-4 in conference play this season. There are only five other teams that have records above .500 in the ACC. If the Blue Devils can maintain a winning record in ACC play, they should be able to get into the NCAA Tournament.

One of the last times Duke lost to Miami in what was considered a bad loss came back in 2015. After that game, the Blue Devils went on to run the table and did not lose again until the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament. That team under Mike Krzyzewski then went on to win the national championship in Indianapolis.

Syracuse Downtown Dining Weeks returns, but it’s different this year (of course) (PS; $; Cazentre)

Nothing has been “normal” for the Central New York restaurant industry in the past year, and that will hold true for the annual promotion called Syracuse Downtown Dining Weeks.

This year, it’s “Delicious Downtown Deals,” and it will last a whole month (February) instead of the usual two weeks in February. That means it starts today and ends Sunday, Feb. 28. It’s coordinated by the Downtown Committee of Syracuse and Visions Federal Credit Union.

And unlike past years, when all participants offered essentially similar deals — like 3-course dinners for $35 or less — this year each restaurant will design its own specials.

Some examples:

· Several places are tying the value of their deals to the new year: Pita Dream, a Mediterranean Halal restaurant at 214 Walton St., is offering two full meal platters for $20.21, while Apizza Regionale, 260 W. Genesee St., has lunch or dinner meal deals for $20.21. Kasai Ramen, 218 Walton St., has both in-house and takeout meal deals for $20.21.
