Welcome to National Hippo Day!

National Hippo Day is commemorated on February 15 of every year. Hippopotamuses love water, which is why the Greeks named them the river horse. The hippopotamus or Hippo is the third-largest type of land mammal after elephants and rhinoceros. These mammals can be identified with wide-opening mouths revealing large canine tusks, nearly hairless bodies, and large sizes weighing an average of 1,500 kg. This hippopotamus lives near rivers, lakes, and mangrove swamps and they are not territorial on land. They emerge at dusk to feed on grasses. The hippopotamus is aggressive, unpredictable, and has attacked humans before. They are poached for their meat and ivory canine teeth.

Jesse Edwards begins recovery of fractured wrist after being ruled out for season (DO; Crane)

When Jesse Edwards picked up his fifth foul against Boston College, stepping into Jaeden Zackery’s path as the guard tore toward the basket in transition, David Edwards didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary. Edwards fell on his wrist after making contact with Zackery, landed on his back, rolled over onto his stomach and walked to the bench — fouled out of a game for the 11th time this season — to watch the final three minutes of Syracuse’s Feb. 8 win.

It was nearly 4 a.m. in Edwards’ hometown of Amsterdam, Netherlands, and David had watched his son navigate one of his toughest games this season for the previous 37 minutes. In a season-low 13 minutes, Edwards missed layups and was pushed around inside the paint by Boston College center Quinten Post. Edwards didn’t score a single point for the first time this season. But when the final foul, and the injury, happened, it felt like the “icing on the cake” in the worst way possible, David said.

The next day, Edwards messaged David to tell him he had a “bad feeling” in his hand. That bad feeling and bruising — as well as the swelling — worsened as the Orange departed Chestnut Hill and returned to Syracuse, where Edwards underwent X-rays. By that point, he could sense that something was wrong. Results confirmed that Edwards had fractured his left wrist and would miss the remainder of the season, halting his breakout campaign and thrusting uncertainty into Syracuse’s center position after Friday’s procedure. It’s not Edwards’ first wrist injury, but it sends him into an elongated offseason of recovery and improvements.

What will SU basketball practices look like as Orange preps for brutal stretch? (PS; Ditota)

Syracuse men’s basketball players get a week reprieve from games this week.

The Orange will not play between its loss at Virginia Tech last Saturday and its home game against Boston College this Saturday.

SU coach Jim Boeheim said his team will take two days off this week, since next week’s game schedule will not permit the NCAA mandatory time off.

Upcoming for the Orange? A brutal stretch of three games within five days and five games within 10 days.

Here’s what that looks like:

Saturday, Feb. 19, noon, home vs. Boston College

Monday, Feb. 21, 7 p.m., home vs. Georgia Tech

Wednesday, Feb. 23, (likely 7 p.m.), at Notre Dame

Saturday, Feb. 26, 6 p.m., vs. Duke

Monday, Feb. 28, 7 p.m., at North Carolina

SU plays its final game of the regular season on March 5, when Miami visits the Carrier Dome.

The Georgia Tech game was rescheduled from last December because of Covid-19 issues with the Yellow Jackets. Boeheim would have liked to sneak that game into this week’s schedule, but it didn’t work out. Georgia Tech plays twice this week; there was the possibility the Yellow Jackets could have played in Syracuse on Thursday, but the Orange women have a Dome game that day.

Instead, SU will be playing all these games with a roster that ranks 356th nationally in bench minutes. It will also play the rest of its season without center Jesse Edwards, who is out for the year after last week’s wrist surgery.

“We’re adjusting to playing without Jesse. That’ll be a big part of this week,” Boeheim said. “And because we’re playing the five games, we’ll try to get Benny more practice reps, Sy more practice and John Bol, too. We’ll try to get those guys more reps in practice. Playing that many games in so few days, it’s a tough stretch for us.”

Boeheim addressed the loss of Edwards after the Virginia Tech game. Because Edwards has grown so adept in the pick and roll, teams could not afford to double the ball at the point of the screen and allow him to roam free in the lane.

With Frank Anselem being thrust into the starting center role for the rest of the season, what are the realistic expectations for him the rest of the way? Plus, Syracuse football had a busy offseason of coaching and transfer portal navigation. How would you grade the Orange's moves? Also, SU has a daunting schedule ahead for 2022. Could the hill be too steep for Syracuse to get to a bowl game? Tim Leonard and Tyler Aki discuss it all and more on the Tuesday edition of the Locked on Syracuse Podcast.

Syracuse Basketball: Huge challenge to keep winning-seasons streak alive (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball, which will unfortunately be without junior center Jesse Edwards for the remainder of the 2021-22 campaign, saw its four-game success streak snapped when the Orange fell at Virginia Tech, 71-59, on Saturday evening.

The ‘Cuse (13-12, 7-7) has six regular-season contests left before the ACC Tournament in Brooklyn, N.Y., next month. I remain hopeful that Syracuse basketball can snag a post-season bid to the NIT.

An invite to the Big Dance is really a dream at this point, unless the Orange goes on a run to close out the regular stanza and then does some serious damage in Brooklyn.

However, what I’m really focused on at this juncture, especially given the sad news about Edwards, is the ‘Cuse keeping intact its decades-long streak of posting winning season after winning season.

As we’ve noted many times, in his more than four decades at the helm on the Hill, Orange head coach Jim Boeheim has never endured a term where the team’s record is below .500. It’s fair to say that Coach Boeheim’s streak could be in a bit of jeopardy in 2021-22.

Syracuse basketball has two winnable games lurking in the near future.

Following Saturday’s slate of Atlantic Coast Conference collisions, the ‘Cuse sits in a tie for seventh place in the league standings with Virginia Tech.

The Orange will have a multi-day stretch of practices before the ‘Cuse returns to action with a home game versus Boston College this coming Saturday afternoon. Not too long ago, Syracuse basketball dispatched of the Eagles on their own turf.

After the BC bout, the Orange hosts Georgia Tech on February 21, goes to Notre Dame on February 23, entertains Duke in Central New York on February 26, travels to North Carolina on February 28 and wraps up the 2021-22 regular season at the Carrier Dome versus Miami on March 5.

Wild weather ride for CNY: bitter cold, near-record warmth, flooding, snow (PS; Coin)

Central New York will see a wild swing in weather this week, from subzero temperatures this morning to near-record warmth and potentially flooding rain Thursday. Another cold snap comes Friday, turning that rain to snow.

That weather whiplash has forecasters nervous about flooding along creeks and rivers prone to ice jams. A cold snap followed by rapid warming with rain is the perfect recipe for ice jams, which can dam up creeks and force water into surrounding areas.

“The main concern in the long term is a prolonged period of rain Thursday into Thursday night, with mild temperatures during the daytime hours contributing to snowmelt,” the National Weather Service said. “This will lead to a risk for increasing water levels as well as ice jams on rivers.”

Temperatures fell below zero in parts of the region this morning. Highs will only get up into the teens today, and in the 20s on Tuesday.

Everything changes Wednesday as a warm front, carrying up to an inch of rain, pushes in from the southwest. Temperatures will rise into the 40s Wednesday and into the mid to upper 50s on Thursday. The record high for Syracuse on Feb. 17 is 60 degrees.

The combination of high temperatures and warm rain penetrating the snow pack could cause rapid runoff into creeks and rivers. Under those conditions, creek water pushes upward on ice, breaking it into chunks that can then pile up at turns or under bridges.

Conditions will be exacerbated by wind gusts as high as 40 mph Thursday night. Those winds could heighten the flood risk in two ways: driving relatively warm rain deeper into the snow and accelerating melting, and breaking up ice and forcing the chunks downstream.

Cold weather returns rapidly Thursday night, with temperatures falling from the 50s Thursday afternoon to the teens by Saturday morning. The rain could switch over to snow, covering over ice forming on sidewalks and roads.
