Welcome to National Ranch Day!

Hidden Valley claims to have created the first Ranch back in 1954, on its dude ranch in the mountains outside of Santa Barbara – pretty idyllic for the birth of the one true dressing. Legend has it that plumber-turned-cowboy Hidden Valley rancher Steve Henson first established the ranch and cooked for his guests, covering his meals with a tantalizing mix of buttermilk and herbs.

Steve began to package his dressing and send it off with guests, but the demand became unmanageable. Eventually, Ranch hit Southwestern supermarkets and then traversed the nation, forcing the production of the heavenly liquid to be moved to a larger facility in Sparks, Nevada. Gone were the days of the home-style seasoning packets handed out to friends and neighbors to be mixed with buttermilk and mayo.

Syracuse basketball vs. Duke: What to know (PS; $; Waters)

Syracuse will try to pull off a seemingly impossible challenge without its leading man as it takes on Duke in the ACC tournament’s quarterfinals on Thursday.

Syracuse finished the regular season with four straight losses but ripped through Florida State, 96-57, in the tournament’s second round on Wednesday.

However, midway through the first half, Syracuse’s Buddy Boeheim punched Florida State’s Wyatt Wilkes in the midsection. There was no foul called on the play, but later in the day on Wednesday, the ACC announced a one-game suspension for Boeheim.

That means Syracuse will take on No. 1 seed Duke without its star player, who led the ACC in scoring this past season.

Syracuse’s task already seemed insurmountable after two lopsided losses to Duke this season. The Blue Devils beat Syracuse 79-59 at Cameron Indoor Stadium and then upped its margin of victory to 25 points in a 97-72 win at the Carrier Dome.

The game is scheduled to start at noon on Thursday and will be televised on ESPN.

Here are five key things to know about the matchup:

The impact of Buddy’s absence

Buddy Boeheim is the player Syracuse could least afford to lose for any game, much less one against nationally-ranked Duke.

Boeheim led the ACC in scoring this season at 19.3 points per game. He also led the league in minutes played, an indication of how badly Syracuse needs him on the court. He ranks 13th in school history in career points with 1,765 and he’s second to Gerry McNamara with 309 made 3-pointers.

Opponent Preview: What to know about Duke, the ACC Tournament's top seed (DO; Crane)

Behind 28 points from Cole Swider and 51.4% shooting from the field, Syracuse cruised past Florida State 96-57 to set up a quarterfinal matchup with No. 1 seed Duke. But the Orange won’t have Buddy Boeheim, who was suspended by the Atlantic Coast Conference for one game “as the result of a flagrant act” when he punched Wyatt Wilkes in the midsection around the 10-minute mark of the first half.

Duke had a bye through the first two days of the ACC Tournament, and it last played on March 5 — when they allowed 94 points and lost to North Carolina by 13 in Mike Krzyzewski’s final game at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The winner advances to face either Miami or Boston College in the semifinal on Friday, inching closer to the conference’s automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.

Here’s what you need to know about the Blue Devils before they face Syracuse for the third time this season, with both of the previous meetings won comfortably by the Blue Devils.

All-time series

Duke leads, 13-6.

Last time they played

The Blue Devils jumped out to a 14-0 advantage and led 41-13 by the eight-minute mark of the first half en route to their 97-72 win in the Carrier Dome on Feb. 26. Mark Williams paced Duke with 28 points, dominating SU’s forwards around the blocks and inside the paint, while AJ Griffin connected on six 3-pointers and prompted head coach Jim Boeheim to say postgame that “I’m really disappointed in our inside play.”

Buddy Boeheim managed 23 points on 21 shots, but the Orange only made 5-of-18 shots from 3 as Duke, for the most part, limited their threat from beyond the arc. In the second half, with Cole Swider and Jimmy Boeheim ineffective, Boeheim turned to an unusual lineup combination of John Bol Ajak, Benny Williams and Bourama Sidibe.

Beat writers predict No. 1 seed Duke will eliminate Syracuse from ACC Tournament (DO; Staff)

A day after thumping Florida State in a 39-point victory, No. 9 seed Syracuse will play No. 1 seed Duke in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament. The two teams have met twice this season, with both games ending in 20-point losses for the Orange.

The matchup will most likely be the final one between the NCAA’s two winningest coaches, Jim Boeheim of Syracuse and Mike Krzyzewski of Duke.

Syracuse’s leading scorer Buddy Boeheim will also miss the Duke contest after a flagrant foul during the FSU game. Here’s what our beat writers project will happen when SU and Duke square off at noon on Thursday in Brooklyn:

Andrew Crane (23-9)
Duke 84, Syracuse 77
And now they wait

The Orange looked like a completely different team with Symir Torrence back conducting its offense, but it’s difficult to pick them to win another game in Brooklyn because of Duke center Mark Williams. He scored 43 points in the two meetings between the teams this season, and although Bourama Sidibe flashed effectiveness on the defensive end against Florida State, SU will need Frank Anselem to string together another strong performance in case Sidibe gets into foul trouble.

Look for Syracuse to keep it close, though. Cole Swider, with 28- and 36-point performances within the last 10 days, has settled into a late-season rhythm that takes pressure off Buddy, and that’ll help the Orange stay within striking distance. But I think the Blue Devils will eventually pull away late in the second half, sending Syracuse into a stretch where it’ll wait to find out if one conference tournament win is enough for an NIT bid.

Roshan Fernandez (20-12)
It was good while it lasted
Duke 84, Syracuse 78

Picking against Syracuse in March makes me very nervous, particularly when the Orange just shocked Florida State by 39 points. SU played its best basketball of the year on Wednesday, but Florida State and Duke aren’t synonymous. Syracuse hasn’t been consistent from game to game, and the Blue Devils are on another level this season. Even Boeheim has made that clear. “We can’t handle Duke, it’s pretty simple,” Boeheim said after the latest contest, which ended in a 25-point loss for SU.

Boeheim’s team has lost both games to Duke by at least 20 points, the first time that’s happened in the history of the Boeheim-Krzyzewski matchup. Krzyzewski, on the other hand, has emphasized that this is one of his best teams in years.

Syracuse looked very impressive behind Swider’s hot shooting and the consistency of Buddy and Jimmy Boeheim scoring the ball. Torrence’s return came at the right time. But SU will be without Buddy against Duke, and I think it’ll hit the end of the road.

Syracuse basketball: Jay Bilas blasts ACC for Buddy Boeheim suspension (247sports.com; Nivision)

Syracuse star Buddy Boheim has been suspended for the team’s next ACC Tournament game after striking Florida State’s Wyatt Wilkes in a second-round matchup. ESPN’s Jay Bilas has now expressed strong criticism for the suspension, which will force Boeheim to miss the Orange’s game against Duke.

Boeheim took a swing at the midsection of Wilkes in the first half against the Seminoles. Wilkes was clearly in pain, but the officials did not notice the play and did not review it during the game.

Because the officials did not catch it in the middle of the game, Bilas asserts that the league should not go back after the fact and rule that Boeheim is suspended. In a video posted to Twitter, Bilas takes the conference to task for what he believes is an unfair punishment.

“The suspension of Syracuse’s Buddy Boeheim for what happened in the Florida State game is just wrong,” Bilas said. “The ACC came in after the fact and decided to suspend Buddy Boeheim, and it’s disproportionate to the offense. Rules are rules. The rules of the game indicate that if play started after the fact and the action could not be reviewed, that’s final. It was final. The referees could not review the play after play started again. They missed it, and that’s fine. The ACC could condemn the action and issue a reprimand, but suspending Buddy Boeheim for the next game against Duke is disproportionate to the offense, and I think, wrong. That effectively ends Buddy Boeheim’s career. It affects the ACC Tournament, and I don’t think it’s the right thing. Rules are rules. Those rules were written for a reason.

Five Takeaways: Syracuse 96 FSU 57 (SI; McAllister)

Syracuse blew out Florida State 96-57 in the second round of the ACC Tournament on Wednesday. Here are five takeaways from the game.

1. Kudos to the Players and Coaches

After the way that Miami game finished including all of the emotions involved, I think most expected this Syracuse team to limp into its game against Florida State, lose and end the season. Instead the Orange put together one of its most complete performances of the season. That is a credit to the coaches for getting them ready to play, the players for bouncing back mentally and the culture of the program.

2. Frank & Symir

Frank Anselem had been largely invisible since his first start against Virginia Tech. Against Florida State, he was active and efficient. He scored nine points, grabbed 15 rebounds, had four assists and three blocks. It was a tremendous all around game. Symir Torrence also came off the bench to give Syracuse a big boost. He scored nine points and had nine assists with two steals to just one turnover. He has come along and gotten more comfortable as the season has progressed, and that showed against Florida State. Both had significant impacts on the game, which is encouraging for next season.

3. Cole Swider

Swider had another strong game. Five of the last seven have been pretty good or better from him. When he plays well, Syracuse is a different team. Beyond his strong offensive outing (28 points, 4-6 from three), he had perhaps his best game defensively. Swider was active, closed out on shooters, blocked a three point attempt, and got deflections. He even grabbed 13 rebounds. Swider is shooting 55% from three over his last seven games. It would be a big boost to Syracuse if he elected to come back next season.

Syracuse vs Duke Game Preview, ACC Tournament

Why Syracuse Will Win

Seriously? What or who was THAT Syracuse team?
It came out hot and destroyed Florida State 96-57 in the first round to get here, and it did it by locking up the Noles to just 2-of-25 from three and hitting every big shot early.

That D rarely showed up this season, and it certainly didn’t make an appearance in any of the two games against Duke – both blowout losses.

Duke doesn’t need the three to win, but it’s certainly been a tad vulnerable at times over the finishing kick. The defense hasn’t been good enough – too many teams are making the extra pass too early for easy buckets, but …
– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Duke Will Win

Syracuse isn’t stopping Duke.

The Blue Devils scored 79 in the first win – a 20-point victory – and hit ten threes, and they ripped it up in the rematch in Syracuse making 54% of its shots from the field in a 97-72 win.

How do you beat the Syracuse defense – at least when it’s working? You pass the ball around efficiently, and no one in the ACC does that better than Duke with a whopping 51 assists in the two games.

The Deciding Factor Between Syracuse and Florida State – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefizz.net; Frank)

Three-point shooting is important in every game. It might be the most important statistic in all of basketball right now. That could not be more true heading into Wednesday’s game between Syracuse and Florida State. This will be the third (and likely final) matchup between these two teams this season.

Back in early December, these teams opened conference play down in Tallahassee. The game was not fun to watch. Both teams shot under 35% from the field and had double-digit turnovers. It was ugly, to say the least.

Coming off a dramatic double-overtime win over Indiana earlier in the week, the Orange looked gassed. But, the shooting of Cole Swider and Joe Girard carried SU to victory. Each player made four threes, and Syracuse made nine as a team while Florida State went 4-30 (that’s 13.3%) from behind the arc.

Those threes made the difference in the game, and it looked like the Orange had an early-season resume-boosting win. SU would win or lose games based on its shooting, and it certainly did after the FSU game.

In between games against the Seminoles, the Orange went 3-4 with a COVID pause in between. By the time SU and FSU met for the second time, Syracuse was under .500 and sputtering in the ACC.

Cole Swider had one of his best games as a member of Syracuse en route to the Orange CRUSHING Florida State in the ACC Tournament. Plus, there was an ugly moment between Buddy Boeheim and Wyatt Wilkes. Should Buddy Boeheim be suspended for Syracuse's next game against Duke? Also, a round up of how every single player contributed to the team effort win. Tyler Aki and Tim Leonard discuss it all and more on the Locked on Syracuse Podcast.

Brent recaps Syracuse's dominant win over Florida State and evaluates their chances tomorrow against Duke. Brent also takes a look at the Buddy Boeheim situation and discusses the potential consequences.

Axe: Buddy Boeheim delivers one last gut punch for SU basketball season (PS; $; Axe)

OK, now you’ve convinced me.

It wasn’t a global pandemic, being on the brink of another World War or one of the countless other mind-bending things that have happened over the last couple years that convinced me we crossed into some sort of alternate reality.

Buddy Boeheim possibly playing his last game in a Syracuse uniform on Wednesday against Florida State because he was suspended for punching someone?

We are talking about the same Buddy Boeheim here?

Jackson Thomas Boeheim. Son of Jim and Juli? Star of cereal commercials?

Yep. Same guy.

There’s no question Boeheim’s swing at Florida State’s Wyatt Wilkes was a cheap shot.

Here is Buddy Boeheim pretty obviously punching a dude in the gut. pic.twitter.com/xIbUSdoiRa
— Troy Machir (@TroyMachir) March 9, 2022

The trick here is nothing was called during the game, perhaps marking the first time in recorded history that Ted Valentine screwed over Syracuse by not blowing the whistle.

Most reasonable minds agree Boeheim would have been called for a flagrant one foul for the punch had the officials seen it, meaning he would have not been ejected from the game. Even if officials went further and ejected Boeheim for a flagrant two foul, that penalty likely would have sufficed, and Boeheim would be suiting up against Duke.

Further muddying the waters here is Florida State coach Leonard Hamilton and Wilkes wanted to just let it go.

Cold winds will blow and flurries will fly for St. Patrick's Day weekend, but travel will remain easy with little if any accumulating snow.Michael Greenlar | mgreenlar@syr

6 things to know if you’re going to the St. Patrick’s Parade this weekend (PS; Miller)

Downtown Syracuse on Saturday will look like it normally does on this weekend: Gray skies with white snow falling onto tens of thousands of people wearing green on South Salina Street. And that’s a good thing.

The St. Patrick’s Parade is back for the first time since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. Onondaga County and Syracuse officials canceled the parade two days beforehand after the first case of coronavirus appeared in Monroe County. But now as Covid infections have dwindled and mask mandates have disappeared, the parade has come back to life and is expected to be bigger than ever.

You might be new to the area and have never seen what’s become one of the biggest downtown events. Maybe you’re suddenly a grown-up and this is the first time to attend with children. Or perhaps you’ve always blocked out the day for hours of parade-watching, bar-hopping and late-night Uber-riding home. This is the right time for a refresher course on what to expect on Saturday.

Here are a few things you need to know if you’re going to the parade (or if you’re intentionally avoiding it):

The Route

The 40th annual parade starts at noon in downtown’s Clinton Square. As of Tuesday afternoon, 108 groups are scheduled to march about a half-mile south on Salina Street and finish on West Onondaga Street near Seymour Street.
