Welcome to Pi Day!

What is Pi?

“Probably no symbol in mathematics has evoked as much mystery, romanticism, misconception and human interest as the number pi”

~William L. Schaaf, Nature and History of Pi

Pi (often represented by the lower-case Greek letter π), one of the most well-known mathematical constants, is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. For any circle, the distance around the edge is a little more than three times the distance across.

Pi Day Expert Quiz!

Typing π into a calculator and pressing ENTER will yield the result 3.141592654, not because this value is exact, but because a calculator’s display is often limited to 10 digits. Pi is actually an irrational number (a decimal with no end and no repeating pattern) that is most often approximated with the decimal 3.14 or the fraction 227.

March Madness for Syracuse transfers: 2 men, 5 women to compete in NCAA tournament (PS; $; Curtis)

The 2022 NCAA tournament field was announced Sunday evening and Syracuse did not qualify for the 68-team field after a disappointing 16-17 season that ended with a loss to Duke in the ACC tournament quarterfinals.

It’s the first time the Orange has missed the Big Dance since the 2016-17 season. However, there are two former Syracuse players that will compete in the tournament.

Former Syracuse guards Kadary Richmond and Brycen Goodine will have a chance to make a run for a national championship since their respective schools, Seton Hall and Providence, earned at-large bids for the tournament.

Seton Hall (21-10) earned the No. 8 seed in the South Region and will face Texas Christian University on Friday in San Diego. The Pirates are coming off a 62-52 loss to Connecticut in the Big East tournament quarterfinals on Thursday.

Richmond, a 6-foot-6 sophomore, is recovering from a sprained right thumb injury he suffered last Saturday against Creighton. Richmond has averaged nine points, 3.6 rebounds and 4.1 assists in 31 games this season for Seton Hall.

Richmond transferred to Seton Hall for an opportunity to earn more playing time. He’s averaged 26 minutes per game this season, up slightly from his 21 minutes per game as a freshman at Syracuse.

Mike Krzyzewski Names His "Best Friend" In College Basketball (thespun.com; Gould)

Duke outlasted Syracuse in a hard-fought ACC Tournament quarterfinal matchup Thursday. With the Orange unlikely to hear their name called Selection Sunday, it probably marked the last meeting between Mike Krzyzewski and Jim Boeheim.

After the win, per WFUV Sports’ Jack Roche (h/t Jonathan Wagner of On3Sports), Coach K reflected on his relationship with the Syracuse coach.

“We’re the best friends,” Krzyzewski said of Boeheim. “I don’t know if there’s anybody in coaching that could be better friends with another coach in his profession than me and Jim. I mean, that comes way before USA basketball, with P.J. Carlesimo and Mike Fratello. The four of us were like brothers, and then the 11 years with the U.S. Team.”

Got the chance to ask Coach K about his relationship with Jim Boeheim following their likely final matchup.

Five ACC Teams Receive Bids to NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament (theacc.com)

Five Atlantic Coast Conference programs earned bids to the 2022 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. Duke, Miami, North Carolina, Notre Dame and Virginia Tech were selected to compete in the 68-team event, which begins Tuesday with First Four games in Dayton, Ohio. The first round starts Thursday.

ACC regular-season champion Duke (28-6, 16-4 ACC) notched the No. 2 seed in the West Region and plays No. 15 seed Cal State Fullerton (21-10) on Friday in Greenville, South Carolina. Making their 44th NCAA appearance, including the 36th under head coach Mike Krzyzewski, the Blue Devils are 114-38 all-time in NCAA Tournament action, with national championships in 1991, 1992, 2001, 2010 and 2015.

North Carolina (24-9, 15-5) earned a No. 8 seed in the East Region and will play No. 9 seed Marquette (19-12) on Thursday in Fort Worth, Texas. UNC will make its 52nd appearance in the NCAA Tournament – most of any ACC program – and head coach Hubert Davis guided the Tar Heels to the tournament in his first season at the helm. UNC owns a 126-48 record in the tournament with NCAA titles in 1957, 1982, 1993, 2005, 2009 and 2017.

Miami (23-10, 14-6) notched the No. 10 seed in the Midwest Region. The Hurricanes will take on Southern California (26-7) on Friday in Greenville. Miami picked up its 11th NCAA Tournament bid, including its first since 2018 and fifth under head coach Jim Larrañaga. The Canes are 8-10 all-time in NCAA Tournament action.

Fresh off winning its first ACC Championship on Saturday night, Virginia Tech (23-12, 11-9) earned the No. 11 seed in the East Region and will battle No. 6 seed Texas (23-12) Friday in Milwaukee. The Hokies will be making their 13th NCAA Tournament appearance, including the fifth straight and the second under head coach Mike Young. Virginia Tech holds an 8-12 all-time record in NCAA play.

Syracuse Recruiting Roundup: Robert Wright, Judah Mintz - The Juice Online (the juice; Auger)

Syracuse offered 2024 point guard Robert Wright on Friday, he tweeted. The 6-0, 165 pound Neumann (PA) Goretti prospect hails from the same school as former Orange point guard Scoop Jardine. His offer list includes Miami, Seton Hall and Wake Forest.

Another point guard Syracuse has been pursuing is 2022 four-star Judah Mintz. The former Pittsburgh commit is ranked 53rd in his class and is down to finalists DePaul, Wake Forest, NC State and Syracuse. Last week, two 247 analysts put in crystal ball predictions for DePaul, and Pro Insight’s Andrew Slater also tweeted that the Chicago school is currently in the lead.

Moving over to football, Syracuse continues to mine the transfer portal to bolster its 2022 roster. UCF defensive tackle Cam Goode tweeted on Tuesday that he’s taking a visit to Central New York on Mar. 25. In 2021, Goode appeared in 13 games and notched 24 tackles, three sacks and four forced fumbles. He was a three star recruit in the 2018 recruiting cycle, and committed to Va. Tech before transferring to the Knights.

The Orange offered 2024 Little Rock (AR) Christian Academy quarterback Walker White on Wednesday, he tweeted. Ole Miss, Central Arkansas, Tulsa and Virginia have also extended offers. Rivals rates him as a four-star prospect.

Syracuse offered 2023 defensive lineman Malik Tullis in February. The Creekside (GA) High prospect is rated three stars by Rivals and holds offer from Charlotte, Georgia Tech, Memphis and Liberty, among others. On Sunday, Tullis came off the board, as he announced his commitment to Eastern Michigan.

He walked off the court to the sound of the other team’s celebration and stopped just beyond the tunnel for a quiet conversation with one of two captains, Wendell Moore, Jr., before he took his wife by the hand.

This was after Mike Krzyzewski’s final loss in the ACC tournament — the loss before loss, the last of his career, unless Duke wins six more games. It was late Saturday night. Krzyzewski looked tired, worn.

Soon he’d reveal a hoarse voice during his postgame press conference, the sound of a man who’d spent much of the past two hours trying to will something out of his team it did not have. Then he entered a trance of resignation and acceptance in the final moments of the Blue Devils’ 82-67 loss against Virginia Tech in the ACC tournament championship game.

There was a time when Krzyzewski and his teams more or less owned this tournament. Entering Saturday he’d won it 15 times. This was the 22nd time he’d led Duke to the championship game, more than any other coach in league history. Throughout the late 90s and 2000s, it felt like the Blue Devils made it every year, and during one 13-year stretch they won it 10 times.

Jimmy Boeheim earns ACC All-Tournament 2nd team honors (DO; Crane)

After averaging 20 points and 6.5 rebounds in Syracuse’s two Atlantic Coast Conference tournament games, Jimmy Boeheim was named to the ACC All-Tournament Second Team. He’s the only SU player to earn a spot on either team, and he joins Virginia Tech’s Storm Murphy and Darius Maddox, North Carolina’s Armando Bacot and Boston College’s Quinten Post as second-team selections.

Jimmy contributed 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting in the Orange’s 96-point outburst against Florida State, though he only played 22 minutes after picking up his second foul at the 13:35 mark of the first half — prompting SU to turn to its three-guard lineup, which keyed its transition offense and 51% shooting from the field.

But after Buddy Boeheim was suspended for Syracuse’s quarterfinal game against Duke for punching FSU’s Wyatt Wilkes in the mid-section, Jimmy emerged as the Orange’s leading scorer against the top-seeded Blue Devils. He totaled a season-high 28 points on 11-for-20 shooting, with the 20 attempts tying his most in a game this year, while contributing seven rebounds, two assists and three steals.

“Jimmy wanted to get his little brother another game, and he did everything he could to accomplish that,” Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim said, while adding later in his opening statement that Jimmy “was just tremendous tonight.”

Syracuse Basketball: ‘Everything on table’ for 5-star Kentucky de-commit (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball is among numerous high-major programs to make contact with a 2022 five-star prospect who has de-committed from blue-blood squad Kentucky, according to a media report.

Skyy Clark is a 6-foot-3 player in the 2022 cycle listed as either a point guard, a combo guard or a shooting guard, depending on the recruiting service.

He recently said on Twitter that he would reopen his recruitment back up and take the next couple of weeks to regroup with his family and determine the best steps for him moving forward.

— skyy clark (@skyyclark) March 6, 2022

A senior at the powerhouse Montverde Academy in Montverde, Fla., Clark committed to Kentucky out of the Southeastern Conference in October of 2020, with his other finalists at that time including North Carolina, Memphis and UCLA, per an article from 247Sports.

According to recruiting services, Clark has obtained around two-dozen offers throughout his recruiting process, from teams such as North Carolina, Florida State, Kansas, Auburn, Indiana, Memphis, Michigan, Ohio State, Tennessee, Rutgers, Southern California, Texas Tech, Oregon, Oklahoma State and Wake Forest.

Syracuse basketball may be showing interest in a former Kentucky commit.

Since reopening his recruitment, Clark has heard from teams such as the Orange, Illinois, Tennessee, Arizona State, Georgetown, Xavier, the Overtime Elite professional league and the NBA’s G League, according to a tweet from 247Sports national analyst Travis Branham, who notes that Kentucky will remain an option for Clark.

Five-star PG Skyy Clark has heard from Illinois, Tennessee, Arizona State, Syracuse, Georgetown, Xavier, Overtime Elite and the G league amongst others since reopening his recruitment, source tells @247Sports.

As I often preface in these sorts of stories, I’m not a recruiting analyst, nor am I in Clark’s inner circle, so I have no idea whether there is mutual interest between Syracuse basketball and this elite 2022 prospect.

Clark, who is from Nashville, Tenn., is rated as four stars by a lot of recruiting services, although the industry-generated 247Sports Composite has him as five stars.

The 247Sports Composite has him as No. 27 overall and No. 5 at point guard. Clark is No. 35 nationally and No. 8 at point guard, says.

The 2022 New York State Craft Beer Competition winners have been announced.

New York state’s best beers: Strong competition leads to ties for first place (PS; Cazentre)

It seems the annual New York State Craft Beer Competition had a little trouble identifying the single best brew and best brewery in the state for 2022.

But that’s because the competition proved to be extremely close.

Both the Governor’s Cup, awarded to the top-scoring beer in the contest, and Brewery of the Year, awarded based on the medal count, ended in ties.

The Governor’s Cup (best beer) this year is shared by Lunkenheimer Brewing of Weedsport, Cayuga County, for its Woodruff Berliner Weisse and Wood Kettle Brewing of Greece near Rochester for its Brother Bear Brown Ale.

The Brewery of the Year is shared by Grimm Artisan Ales of Brooklyn and Strangebird Brewery of Rochester.

Winners of the 2022 competition were announced Friday in Albany at the annual conference of the New York State Craft Brewers Conference. In all, 84 medals were awarded in 29 beer categories. This year’s competition drew 1,200 entries which were judged by a panel of experts in Rochester in January.

The New York State Craft Beer Competition started in 2017 and is billed as the largest state-level competition in the country. New York is now home to nearly 500 breweries, among the most of any state.

This is the first year there were ties in either the Governor’s Cup or Brewery of the Year categories, said Paul Leone, executive director of the state craft brewers association.

“This is what we heard from the judges — that this was best year ever in terms of quality,” Leone said. “It was really hard to make the picks because it was so close in so many categories. The beer has gotten so much better.”

Other top category winners included a “collaboration” between Strangebird and Steuben Brewing in Hammondsport for their joint effort for a beer called New York Artisanal Harvest.

Shepherd’s (Sheps) Brewing of Auburn won the top prize for beers made primarily with New York state ingredients for its Flashpoint Scotch Ale.

The showings in top categories by Lunkenheimer and Shepherd’s continues a trend for breweries in Cayuga County to perform well in the contest despite the county’s relatively small population.

Those two breweries, along with Prison City of Auburn and Aurora Brewing in southern Cayuga County, accounted for nine total medals. In comparison, breweries from Onondaga County, Cayuga’s much larger neighbor, took home six total medals.

“Those breweries (in Cayuga County) are not only strong in their region, they’re strong statewide,” Leone said.

The 2022 winners

Here are the medal winners in the 2022 competition, listed alphabetically brewery:

My hometown Brewery comes through and gets the Governor's cup, Congrats to Lunkenheimer Brewing. If you haven't been to Lunkenheimers it is a cozy little brewery with a good selection of beers and some good wood fire pizza.
