Welcome to Donald Duck Day!

Donald Duck made his cartoon debut in “The Wise Little Hen” back in the summer of 1934. But he wouldn’t meet Mickey Mouse until his second appearance in “Orphan’s Benefit” later that year. From there, it wasn’t long before Daisy Duck and his nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie were introduced. In spite of their superior diction, they weren’t able to steal the spotlight from Donald. You can’t replace his grumpy, nearly incomprehensible charm, and it’s why the Donald has been in more movies (200+) than any Disney character. So, let’s celebrate on June 9 — National Donald Duck Day!

What is the position-by-position breakdown of Syracuse’s scoring leaders in Jim Boeheim’s tenure? (Mike’s Mailbox) (PS; $; Waters)

We focus mainly on college basketball here at the Mailbox, but this week a reader poses a question that ties college and pro ball together.

It’s about scoring by position. It starts with the NBA’s Joel Embiid and compares his feat of leading the NBA in scoring to Syracuse’s scoring leaders.

If you have any questions relative to Syracuse, the ACC or college basketball in general, please email them to mwaters@syracuse.com.

Q: Philadelphia’s Joel Embiid became the first center in over 20 years to lead the NBA in scoring this past season. That got me thinking: What is the position-by-position breakdown for Syracuse’s leading scorers in the Jim Boeheim era?

Bill N.

Mike:
This is an intriguing question. With the way the game has changed, it makes sense that Joel Embiid is the first center to lead the NBA in scoring in more than 20 years.

When it comes to Syracuse, I figured that the Orange’s scoring leader would usually be a shooting guard. I mean, scoring is kind of implied, right?

But what I found was a much more even distribution.

In Jim Boeheim’s 46-year tenure, Syracuse’s leading scorer has been a point guard eight times. That is seven different players with Sherman Douglas leading the Orange twice.

Analyzing Syracuse’s Non-Conference Schedule So Far – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefizz.net; Griffin)

As of the morning of June 8, SU has released five games on its non-conference schedule. A few weeks ago Team Fizz argued for a tough as well as an easy slate of games before ACC play. Right now it seems like Jim Boeheim and company are taking the latter route. Here’s a breakdown of what to expect in these five games.

LEHIGH

The Orange and Mountain Hawks were scheduled to meet on December 18 last year. The game was called off due to COVID concerns. It would have been the first showdown between the two since November 2015, a game SU won by 10. Last season’s Lehigh team went 13-19. Brett Reed’s group has registered three consecutive losing seasons after finishing above .500 10 times in an 11-year span. This *should* be a relatively comfortable home victory on November 7.

COLGATE

When an SU fan thinks of Colgate, the connotations are extremely negative. The Orange may hold a 127-46 edge over its most frequent opponent, but last year’s trainwreck of a loss to the Raiders isn’t exactly water under the bridge. Colgate’s momentum didn’t stop there. The Raiders made their third consecutive NCAA Tournament and gave 3rd-seeded Wisconsin all it could handle before falling 67-60. It’ll be hard to rekindle that magic though. Colgate’s top-3 scorers are all gone. Add in that as well as the revenge factor, there’s no possible way Syracuse loses to them again at home on November 15, right? Right?

BRYANT

The Bulldogs nearly pulled off a humungous upset in the season opener in 2020. Alas, SU won the first-ever meeting between the foes. Last season was a very successful one for Bryant. The Smithfield, RI-based school made its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament behind the nation’s leading scorer in Peter Kiss. However, the Bulldogs fell to Wright St. 93-82 in the First Four. Kiss is leaving the Ocean State, but March Madness fan-favorite Doug Edert is on the way in. The former Saint Peter’s Peacock will certainly draw a crowd but probably won’t bring a ton of victories, including on November 26 at the Dome.

Papa Kante Can Be Syracuse’s Next Great Center – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefizz.net; Frank)

Yes, I know. This is not the headline you expected to see come across your timeline. But, despite recruiting rankings, where the rest of the roster stands, and the state of the conference, Papa Kante could have an incredible impact on Syracuse basketball’s present and future.

The center position has obviously been one that Syracuse had struggled to develop for almost a decade before Jesse Edwards blossomed in 2022. Rakeem Christmas continues to be the benchmark that current SU big men cannot reach in terms of statistics and impact.

There is considerable depth in that room with Mounir Hima and Peter Carey filling in behind Edwards coming up next season. But, you can never know what happens in the offseason, whether it be an injury, transfer, or other events that can impact a roster.

The class of 2023 has evaded Syracuse so far, with a big fat goose egg on the board for commitments. But, 2022 had reached this point as well, with Justin Taylor being SU’s first locked-in member of the class of 2022 when he announced his decision in late June last summer.

So, let’s look at Kante, who projects as a physical, intimidating presence in the paint at 6’10. He attends Putnam Science Academy in Connecticut, which has produced successful players like Hamidou Diallo, Tyson Etienne, and others.

Kante’s numbers may not blow you away, he’s outside the top 100 on 247 Sports and Rivals, but when you look at who has offered him, it screams more than his ranking. Defending national champions Kansas, Michigan, Maryland, Providence, Miami, and Iowa among others have offered the center.

If he continues to develop, Kante can become a force to be reckoned with in the paint, and hopefully, the Orange coaching staff can jump on his recruitment before it skyrockets out of their reach.

Edwards could possibly be gone after this season, and you never know what happens in the offseason if Hima does not pan out as Syracuse’s coaches expect, and Carey takes time to develop as well. Three centers in the room are likely the max SU would take on, and Kante could fill right in for Edwards if he departs to the professional ranks after this season.

Hilary Swank finds woman’s lost dog while filming movie in Upstate NY (PS; TNS)

When Chelsea Blackwell lost her dog of 15 years Monday, she was devastated. She wasn’t sure she’d find him again — and she certainly didn’t think the person who would find her dog would be famous actress Hilary Swank, who is in Upstate New York shooting a movie.

Blackwell started driving around in a panic, asking people if they had seen her dog, a small dachshund.

“I noticed there were like eight police cars and people with cameras — I thought maybe somebody got shot,” Blackwell said of the scene as she pulled up near the Greyhound bus station off Broadway downtown. “I asked them if anyone saw a little brown dog, and they said yes, we’ll call her.”

The camera crew told Blackwell a celebrity had found her dog, but she was doubtful. That is, until about an hour later when a gray car pulled up, and she saw her dog, Blue, sitting in Swank’s lap.

“I was like, ‘No way,’” Blackwell said. “As soon as she got out of the car, I kissed Blue and said, ‘Thank you so much.’ "
