Welcome to Sewing Machine Day!

Sewing machines, which are celebrated today, are used to stitch material like cloth or leather. They are usually powered by electricity, but many are still powered by a treadle, just as many early machines were. Their basic design has remained over the years, consisting of a needle, and a shuttle to carry thread. First being used in factories, they were a symbol of the industrial revolution, marking the shift from handmade to automated production. They also became important for home use. Women once spent much time sewing by hand, and the invention of the sewing machine helped free up a lot of this time.

Thomas Saint of England took out the first patent for a complete sewing machine. He was given patent #1764 in 1790. Some sources say that he received his patent on June 13, explaining why Sewing Machine Day takes when it does. The machine was to have an awl that punched a hole, and then a needle that would go through the hole. It is unknown if Saint created a prototype of his sewing machine, and only the drawings of it survive.

Boeheim’s Army’s road to defending their TBT title will start in Syracuse (TNIAAM; Wall)

As Syracuse Orange fans head into summer we wanted to remind you that once again Boeheim’s Army will begin their journey towards a 2nd straight TBT title in Syracuse. The defending champs will host the Syracuse Regional of the 2022 TBT at SRC Arena from July 22-25 and you can get tickets for all sessions now. We’ll also be partnering with TBT again this summer to run a bracket challenge so keep tuned for more details.

While we wait to learn the full field we do know of two other squads who will be in Syracuse. Blue Collar U (the Buffalo alumni team) and Friday Beers (formerly Armored Athlete) are confirmed for the regional. After what happened in 2020 when Syracuse hosted Buffalo, a game between the two squads could get spicy. And we suspect Friday Beers will move a lot of merch with that name and script logo but can they cash in on the court?

It could be a different Boeheim’s Army roster for this summer as Tyler Lydon has retired and last year’s hero Keifer Sykes was playing with Oshae Brissett and the Indiana Pacers. Will Adam Weitsman bring back DJ Kennedy and Tyrese Rice? Could we see a Boeheim (or two) enlist with the Army next month? You would expect Eric Devendorf to get his co-host Kris Joseph back in the mix this summer but we’ll keep you posted on those roster announcements as we get closer to the games.

Syracuse Basketball: 5-star priority target, No. 1 PG, headed to prep power (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball priority recruiting target Elliot Cadeau plans to transfer to one of the top prep-school squads nationwide for his junior season.

The 6-foot-1 Cadeau, a five-star prospect in the 2024 class who is also ranked the No. 1 point guard across the country according to multiple recruiting services, is joining the Link Academy in Branson, Mo., for the upcoming 2022-23 stanza.

That’s according to a tweet from the Link Academy, which had a fabulous 2021-22 term that we’ll discuss in more detail in a second.

Please help us welcome 5 and ESPN top 10 @ElliotCadeau to the Pride! We couldn’t be more excited to have Elliot in Branson! #PartOfThePride pic.twitter.com/cEVf7Zowzb
— Link Hoops (@LinkHoops) June 10, 2022

Cadeau will transfer to this team from Bergen Catholic High School in Oradell, N.J. On the AAU circuit, he runs with one of the premier groups in grassroots basketball, the New York City-based New Heights Lightning in Nike’s EYBL league.

Syracuse basketball offered a scholarship to five-star Elliot Cadeau last November.

In 2021-22, the Link Academy was spectacular, going 34-2 overall and advancing to the championship game of the prestigious GEICO Nationals this past spring, where it fell in the title contest to the juggernaut Montverde Academy in Montverde, Fla.

When MaxPreps released its final national top-20 rankings for the 2021-22 term, the Link Academy checked in at No. 3 around the country.

Not too long ago, high-school hoops analyst and scout Samad Hines published his super-early, pre-season top-25 rankings for the 2022-23 campaign, and he had the Link Academy at No. 10 nationwide.

I have no doubt that Cadeau will be a huge part of the Link Academy’s success in the next high-school season.

In addition to holding the No. 1 spot at point guard in the 2024 ratings, he’s also deemed a top-10 overall player in this class, and Cadeau could certainly make a legitimate run at the No. 1 national rating in his cycle.

Syracuse basketball can never look too far down the line, especially with the unknown at the head coaching position. Brad Klein and Matt Bonaparte interpret how the Class of 2024 will shake out and evaluate the Orange offer sheet

Syracuse Basketball: 5-star priority recruit eyes visits, open to pro options (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball appears to be prioritizing 2024 five-star guard Ian Jackson from New York City, at least for the time being, according to several recent media reports.

As the 6-foot-6 Jackson continues to shine in AAU events, his list of offers is growing. The Orange officially got into the mix for him by doling out a scholarship offer to Jackson in April.

Already rated as the No. 2 player nationally in the rising-junior class by multiple recruiting services, Jackson is expected to make a serious run at the top spot in 2024 when all is said and done.

Come June 15, college coaches will be able to start making direct contact with players in the 2024 cycle, and I’m sure around that time Jackson will see even more offers arrive for him.

Syracuse basketball faces steep competition for five-star Ian Jackson.

Although his recruiting process likely has a way to go, Jackson has obtained early offers from squads such as Kansas, UCLA, Oregon, St. John’s, Seton Hall, Oklahoma State, Connecticut, Nebraska, Kansas State and Bryant.

Duke, Kentucky, Florida State, Virginia, Tennessee and Texas Tech, among others, are reportedly showing interest in him as well.

In a recent interview with On3 national analyst Jamie Shaw, Jackson said that at this juncture, he hears the most from Oregon and Kentucky. He added that he would like to visit those two schools, along with UCLA.

Certainly, Jackson couldn’t go wrong if he ended up picking the Ducks, the Wildcats or the Bruins. But he’s also going to have many other suitors, and I’m hopeful that the Orange can emerge as a viable contender for Jackson.

Syracuse Basketball: 4-star recruit’s athleticism, defense are off the charts (itlh; Adler)

One of the biggest stock risers this spring, regardless of class designation, is 2023 four-star wing Kaden Cooper, who landed a Syracuse basketball offer at the end of April.

The 6-foot-6 guard/small forward has caught the attention of many national recruiting analysts and scouts for his recent performances on the AAU circuit, including during the April live periods where college coaches could watch Cooper in person.

More recently, just in the past few days, the prestigious Pangos All-American Camp transpired in Las Vegas, and experts say that Cooper was one of the best all-around performers, further boosting his stock.

It’s no wonder that the Orange and tons of other college squads have offered him over the last handful of weeks. It’s also a big reason why the ‘Cuse is likely a long shot to prevail in Cooper’s recruitment.

Syracuse basketball faces heated competition for four-star wing Kaden Cooper.

Cooper is a rising senior at The Skill Factory in Atlanta, and he runs with the Oklahoma-based Team Trae Young in the Adidas league on the AAU tour.

Jacob Grandison reveals ACC transfer destination (saturdaytradition.com; Harvey)

Jacob Grandison is leaving Illinois and is bound for the ACC.

On Saturday, Grandison revealed that he is transferring to Duke after 3 seasons inside the program at Champaign. He will join the Blue Devils and play for first-year head coach Jon Scheyer.

Sometimes all you need is the opportunity #13@TiptonEdits pic.twitter.com/nlA0PvtI9d
— Jacob Grandison (@slimjake_) June 11, 2022

Grandison has been a key piece for Illinois for the past 2 seasons. He appeared in 30 games (23) starts during the 2021-22 campaign but missed the regular-season finale vs. Iowa and B1G Tournament loss to Indiana due to injury.

Grandison was able to come off the bench for Illinois during the NCAA Tournament, but he played just 13 total minutes without a bucket across 2 games. His absence had a notable impact on what Illinois could do on both ends of the court.

While the loss of Grandison is a blow, Illinois has been more than active in the transfer portal to replenish the roster. The arrival of Matthew Mayer from Baylor and Terrence Shannon Jr. from Texas Tech in particular have the Illini in a good spot entering the 2022-23 season.

As Amazon grows in Clay, NY lawmakers pass bill targeting e-commerce giant’s production quotas (PS; $; Moriarty)

New York lawmakers have passed a bill that limits warehouse production quotas they say have led to rising injury rates among workers at Amazon facilities in the state.

The Warehouse Worker Protection Act would require warehouse employers, like Amazon, to provide a written description of quotas that employees must meet. Under the legislation, the companies must also describe any “adverse employment action” if workers fail to meet the quotas.

The legislation, which comes a month after Amazon opened one of the world’s largest distribution centers in the Syracuse suburb of Clay, would also prohibit quotas that prevent workers from taking meal or rest periods, or using bathroom facilities.

The effort from Albany shows how government is stepping in to provide some of the protections that labor unions once were able to negotiate on behalf of workers, according to a labor expert at Syracuse University. And it comes even as workers in New York have voted to create the first unionized Amazon warehouse in the nation, and as talk of unionizing in Clay has already begun.

Gov. Kathy Hochul has not said if she will sign the legislation. Avi Small, a spokesperson for the governor, said she is reviewing the bill.
