August 11 is Annual Medical Checkup Day, a yearly reminder of the importance of regular routine visits to maintain good health and prevent serious disease.
Why Are Annual Checkups Important?
The annual checkup is an opportunity for patients to meet with their physicians and communicate any current concerns, test for potential issues, and make sure the patient is in good health. Many diseases, including cancers, have improved outcomes when identified and treated early. Regular checkups let patients proactively manage their health.

If there’s one topic that gets discussed the most in Mike’s Mailbox, it’s got to be recruiting.
Fans always have questions about individual recruits, but it’s the larger picture questions that I like the best. We’ve got a look at both the up-close and the broader view of recruiting in just one question in this week’s Mailbox, plus a whole lot more.

Mike: This is a pertinent two-part question. Let’s take the second part first.
It’s really hard to know exactly how many scholarships will have available this year. Why?
Well, there’s the uncertainty of whether players will take advantage of the NCAA’s extra year of eligibility, which was granted to all athletes who participated in the Covid-impacted 2020-21 season.

Benny Williams’ Play in Summer Showcase Shows Reason for Optimism – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefizz.net; Griffin)
Every summer, a team of current college basketball players goes overseas to play a series of games against international competition. “USA East Coast” is the name of the team, and former SU players to have played for the team include Rakeem Christmas. Benny Williams is the latest Orange hooper to play for this team, as he suited up last weekend. There are several positives to take from the rising second-year forward’s play in Spain as opening night draws closer.
First of all, Christmas showed drastic improvement in the season directly after playing in Spain. The former SU big man saw a massive jump in his efficiency, as his free throw percentage bumped up 15% and he shot the ball nearly 10% better as well. That season was his junior campaign. As a senior, he tripled his scoring output and nearly doubled his rebounds per game. Wow. If Christmas can go overseas and come back a very different player, there’s no reason to think Williams can’t do the same.
Williams also played very well during his time overseas. Over the course of three games, Williams played 15 minutes per game and averaged six points and seven rebounds per game. That is 16 points and 19 rebounds for every 40 minutes played. Not too shabby.

JP Estrella Could be the First Domino in the Future of SU Basketball – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefizz.net; Frank)
The Fizz has devoted lots of characters talking about JP Estrella over the last couple of weeks. It’s been written about, talked about on Fizz Five, and tweeted about. But, the class of 2023 can be a bridge class for Syracuse, and build on what was started in 2022.
Last year’s cycle, combined with Benny Williams coming in solo in 2021, may just have been the tip of the iceberg in SU getting regularly back within the top-100 to get four-star recruits. Williams was a four-star, Mintz, Taylor, and Bunch were four-stars. If Jim Boeheim and the Orange can continuously get multiple four-stars in every class, that will make a huge difference on the court.
Look back from 2016-2020. According to 247 Sports, Syracuse only reeled in only nine four-stars in those five classes. Even while that number may seem good on the surface, six of them played two or fewer seasons for the Orange before transferring. Those decisions to leave usually have not worked out for those players either.
So, not only was talent not coming into the program, the little talent that was either did not live up to their potential, or left. So, going back to Estrella, he is the first player SU has put a lot of effort into recruiting in 2023. He’s taken multiple visits, and the Orange staff has clearly made him a top priority because they know how important getting this kind of player in the program is.
Despite the center room already having three guys in it right now, it is still unclear if Mounir Hima and Peter Carey can start in the ACC, and Estrella said after his visit that Boeheim told him he would play right away. To start the class with a four-star would be a huge boost for Syracuse recruiting in the present and future.

Syracuse Basketball: 4-star Reid Ducharme makes large leap in rankings (itlh; Adler)
Rising-senior guard Reid Ducharme, who took an official visit to Syracuse basketball in June, has made a big climb in a new set of 2023 national rankings.
The four-star shooting guard, who appears to have the Orange in his unofficial top three along with Penn State and Xavier, recently vaulted from No. 109 nationally to No. 85 across the country in his cycle, according to recruiting service On3.
That jump of 24 spots represented one of the largest leaps nationwide in On3’s recently refreshed 2023 ratings. On3 also has Reid Ducharme as the No. 17 shooting guard and the No. 3 player in New Hampshire within the rising-senior class.
As we noted not too long ago, numerous national recruiting analysts and scouts lauded Ducharme for his AAU performances on Nike’s EYBL circuit last month in North Augusta, S.C.
His play for the Boston Amateur Basketball Club, during the EYBL’s annual Peach Jam tournament week, came amid an NCAA live period when ‘Cuse head coach Jim Boeheim and several of his assistants watched Ducharme suit up multiple times in person.

Axe: Boeheim makes a plea to SU fans, donors to step up NIL game (PS; $; Axe)
Hearing Jim Boeheim ask Syracuse fans to donate money to a foundation is not a strange sound to the ears.
Boeheim has devoted thousands of hours to charitable causes, including for his own Jim and Juli Boeheim Foundation, which has raised millions of dollars for charities in Central New York.
Boeheim’s plea on the radio Wednesday afternoon sounded like any other charitable pitch, but in reality was unlike any he’s done before.
The Hall of Famer wasn’t trying to raise money for cancer research, The Boys and Girls Club or the United Way, though he was technically asking you to donate to a foundation.
Boeheim was pleading with Syracuse fans to help his men’s basketball team and Syracuse Athletics keep up with the joneses in the ever-changing world of college athletics.
The 315 Foundation is here to assist with all your name, image and likeness needs for Orange athletes.
“This is your chance to help recruiting because NIL is nothing but colleges collecting money now and arranging deals for players through their collectives,” Boeheim said. “We have a foundation, but it’s the same basic thing. Different terminology. Ours is a foundation, 315 Foundation, which is tax deductible money.”
The concept of the 315 Foundation is this: SU athletes will do some sort of work with non-profits or charities and get paid through the 315 Foundation with money donated by boosters and fans.
“They can do appearances, clinics, camps, speak to a group,” 315 co-founder Tony DeSorbo told syracuse.com. “That would add value for local not-for-profits and help them potentially raise money for themselves or further their mission.”

A look at Syracuse basketball’s incoming class - The Juice Online (the juice; Gustin)
Syracuse’s 2022-23 roster will look dramatically different than a year ago. Gone are the Boeheim Brothers, Bourama Sidibe, Frank Anselem, Chaz Owens and Cole Swider.
Despite this, there’s optimism heading into this season because of Syracuse’s deepest and most talented freshmen class in years.
Here’s a quick look at who’s arriving on campus this fall.
G Judah Mintz- 6’4”
Oak Hill Academy alumni Judah Mintz is the highest recruit for Syracuse coming into the season, and for good reason.
The lengthy combo guard has the athleticism and defensive smarts for the zone.
Mintz, known for his strength finishing at the rim, ranks 33rd in the country on ESPN’s top 100 and has gained national attention heading into college.
As the most anticipated recruit of the class, the guard will most likely find himself in a starting role alongside veteran Joe Girard III. Syracuse will lean on Mintz’s ability to get inside and create for his teammates, even as a young player.
G Quadir Copeland- 6’6”,
Girard, now a senior, has played point guard for much of his Orange career, despite being a more natural two-guard.
Enter Quadir Copeland, a flashy freshman that brings upside and length that Syracuse has missed at point guard recently.
Copeland played at IMG Academy with Justin Taylor, and the two former teammates will be reuniting in Orange.
Copeland has a great ability to break down defenses with strong ball handling and can finish at the rim with his 6’6″ frame.
Though Copeland will likely come off the bench this season, he could be a key backup for Mintz and Girard.

The Orange beat out Virginia and Va. Tech as well as North Carolina to land Virginia native Justin Taylor.

Spiders to open with Syracuse at Empire Classic - University of Richmond Athletics (richmondspiders.com)
The Richmond Spiders men's basketball team will face Syracuse of the ACC in the opening round of the Empire Classic, the Gazelle Group announced Wednesday.
The Spiders and Orange will meet at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Monday, November 21 at 7:00 PM and be followed by St. John's vs Temple. The winners of Monday's semifinals will meet in the championship game on Tuesday, November 22 at 9:00 PM, following the consolation game at 7:00 PM. Both the championship and consolation game will be broadcast on ESPN2. ESPNU will carry Richmond's matchup vs Syracuse.

This will be the fifth meeting between Richmond and Syracuse and first since November 18, 2008, a 76-71 Orange win at the Carrier Dome. Syracuse has won three straight in the series following the 1991 NCAA Tournament, when the 15th-seeded Spiders upset 2nd-seeded Syracuse 73-69, capturing the first win by a 15 seed in NCAA Tournament history.
Richmond, the 2022 Atlantic 10 Champions, will be led by head coach Chris Mooney for the 18th straight season in 2022-23. Mooney has won a school-record 312 games, including 27 wins over power-conference opponents (at least one in 15 of his first 17 seasons).
The Spiders will feature senior forward Tyler Burton, Richmond's leading scorer and rebounder last season. Burton earned All-Conference and All-State honors after 16.1 points and 7.7 rebounds per game in 2021-22.
The remainder of Richmond's 2022-23 schedule will be announced at a later date.

Jimmy Boeheim will play professional basketball in Greece (PS; Mink)
Jimmy Boeheim will spend the upcoming season playing overseas in Greece.
Jim Boeheim detailed his son’s plans Wednesday afternoon during an appearance on ESPN radio’s “Orange Nation.”
“He’s pretty happy. He’s got a pretty good situation there,” Jim Boeheim said. “He leaves in a week. He’ll be right in it pretty soon.”
Jim Boeheim did not say which league Jimmy will play in or for which team.
After completing his one season with Syracuse, Jimmy Boeheim, a 6-foot-9 forward, spent the offseason on the Detroit Pistons’ summer league roster and participated with Boeheim’s Army in The Basketball Tournament.
ACC-Big Ten Challenge Looks to Be Finished (247sports.com; Black)
On Tuesday, multiple news outlet announced that ESPN had pulled out of the sweepstakes of landing the Big Ten, reportedly rejecting a $380 million dollar offer for about 13 games a season for the next seven years. ESPN who has been broadcasting Big Ten games since 1982, would not have had the top selections of games for their network. With the "World Wide Leader" now out of the picture, the battle is down to Fox, CBS and NBC according to Ross Dellenger of Sports Illustrated. That package would have been about half of what ESPN currently holds on in their current deal.
While we haven't seen the fall out yet of this failed deal, one domino to watch is the ACC-Big Ten Challenge. The yearly multi-team matchup between the two Power Five conferences has been homed on ESPN's network of channels, and the company owns the broadcasting rights currently. Luke DeCock of the The News & Observer predicts that we could see the end of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. "As for the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, that annual week-after-Thanksgiving milestone of the non-conference basketball schedule, a welcome oasis of interesting games at a time when ACC schools usually schedule their softest opponents, it probably only has two years left to run.."

CNY developer wants to build $250M lakefront community with 500 homes, hotel and golf course (PS; $; Doran)
A local developer is proposing a $250 million project that would turn Lakeshore Yacht and Country Club into a mix of hundreds of homes, stores, restaurants and a luxury hotel on Oneida Lake.
The proposal for Lakeshore Village includes more than 500 apartments, townhomes, luxury condos and single-family homes, said Guy Hart Jr. of Hart Lyman Cos. LLC, the project’s Syracuse-based developer.
It also includes doubling the size of the existing marina. His plans call for adding a bridge over Lakeshore Road for vehicles so watercraft could pass underneath, a change he says would help knit the two sides of the community together.
There would be a concourse along the lake where people could stroll, and a new clubhouse for events and dining. Eventually, the existing golf course would be rebuilt and open as a championship course and private club.
Hart says he wants to excavate waterways and a canal into the new neighborhood, where the homes and townhomes would be built on the south side.
Hart says he envisions a connected village or community where people can shop, dine, play golf and get around on golf carts, bicycles or on foot while enjoying the lake.
“The Lakeshore Village vision has everything to do with the best parts of where our community has been, in definition of where it can go,’' Hart said.
