Welcome to Day of the Ninja!

Created by Ninja Burger, a parody website that claims to be a sect of ninjas that can deliver fast food meals in under a half-hour to any place at any time, Day of the Ninja is a day when people dress like ninjas, do things that ninjas would do, and share information about ninjas online. The creators of the day have said the day should be used to "plague your co-workers with ninja-ness and wear a ninja mask to work," but said those who don't have to work today should "run wild in the streets, or dress like a ninja at the mall." They encourage everyone to make posts about ninjas all over the internet, such as by making posts on YouTube, putting links about ninjas on websites, and sharing photos of yourself wearing ninja outfits. They say the most important thing that can be done is to tell others about the day so that they can celebrate as well. They aren't too picky about how people celebrate, saying, "Just show the world that YOU ARE NINJA!"

Axe: Pinstripe Bowl pride or pass? Can Notre Dame win spark SU? (quick takes) (PS; $; Axe)

Some quick takes on Syracuse football’s third bid to the Pinstripe Bowl, that game’s unique athletic director angle and SU’s basketball’s big (?) win over Notre Dame as soon as we applaud former Syracuse Chief Fred McGriff for making it to Cooperstown.

Pinstripe Bowl Bound ...Again

You can look at Syracuse football’s third trip to the Pinstripe Bowl one of two ways.

Been there, done that or I’ll be back.

A trip to Yankee Stadium is an easy haul from Central New York and the tri-state area has plenty of Orange alums ready to make the short trek to the Bronx. Selling tickets will not be an issue, no matter what Mother Nature brings in late-December.

At least Syracuse football is back in a bowl game. You have to squint in order to see the memories of Eric Dungey and company celebrating SU’s last bowl win in 2018.

Now it’s a matter of sorting out who will actually be on the field on December 29 for the Orange and Gophers.

Will we see a running back duel between Minnesota’s Mohamed Ibrahim, who rushed for 1594 yards and 19 touchdowns this season, and Syracuse’s Sean Tucker?

Will NFL-level prospects like Orange offensive tackle Matthew Bergeron and linebacker Mikel Jones suit up or skip the bowl game to preserve pro potential?

The Coyle Connection

Mark Coyle’s tenure as AD at Syracuse was brief but impactful.

Syracuse was fresh off the announcement of NCAA sanctions, were planning a major renovation of the Dome, went to Final Fours in both men’s and women’s basketball and won national titles in cross country and field hockey.

But the biggest move Coyle made in his 311-day tenure in 2015 and 2016 was hiring Dino Babers as football coach to replace Scott Shafer. Babers will enter his eighth season as head coach of Syracuse in 2023.

Coyle flew the coop to Minnesota where he brought in P.J. Fleck to row the boat and lead the Gophers football program.

Both coaches are still gainfully employed at their respective schools and will now square off in the Pinstripe Bowl.

In a weird way, Coyle can’t lose in this one.

The Bounce Back?

Joe Girard

Was Syracuse basketball’s win over Notre Dame on Saturday the jolt the Orange needed to right the ship or just a little luck of the Irish rubbing off on them?

The encouraging thing for the Orange was it played a confident game in South Bend on Saturday.

SU certainly had a major tactical advantage as no one on the Irish roster could guard Jesse Edwards in the paint. He was rightly fed the ball time after time to the tune of 22 points and 16 rebounds.

Other good signs for Syracuse were Joe Girard awakening from a three-game slumber and Judah Mintz coming up with a clutch basket for the Orange win.

The concerns for the Orange continue to be spotty play from the forward position, a defense in development and young contributors that have to grow up in a hurry.

SU’s next three opponents, Oakland (2-8), Georgetown (4-5) and Monmouth have a combined 7-21 mark. Cornell is off to a 7-1 start but is a team Syracuse should be able to handle.

On the surface, the upcoming six-game home stand at the JMA Wireless Dome offers a chance for Syracuse to get right before the full-time ACC slate arrives.

Based on what we’ve seen so far in 2022, I’m not taking anything for granted with this team.

Syracuse basketball: Joe Girard busts out of shooting slump at Notre Dame (TNIAAM; Szuba)

The Syracuse Orange men’s basketball team earned an important conference road win at Notre Dame over the weekend. Syracuse edged the Irish 62-61 in large part due to Joe Girard breaking out of a shooting slump.

Girard ended a three game slide where he scored just nine points combined on 2-25 shooting, including 1-13 from the three point line. Against Notre Dame, though, Girard shot 9-18 from the floor and scored 20 points. Syracuse is 4-0 this season when Girard scores 19 points or more.

“We needed Joe to bounce back and that was the difference in the game I think. He was aggressive, we ran some stuff for him but he was aggressive and made some plays,” Jim Boeheim said.

Although he slogged through a tough three game stretch, his teammates still had faith in him. Girard is taking additional defensive attention this year and teams are throwing their best defender on the senior guard.

“The whole team we look for him as a leader. We look to him as a scorer. Whenever he has an off game we still have confidence in him. He came back today and hit some big shots,” Judah Mintz said.

Syracuse Basketball: Melo 4-star son, priority 4-star target fall to top teams (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball recruiting targets are playing for top-25 teams as the 2022-23 season recently got underway, although their high-school squads lost to other highly ranked groups in recent encounters.

According to media reports, Archbishop Stepinac High School in White Plains, N.Y., defeated Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx, N.Y., by a final count of 66-60 in a juicy battle of Empire State teams.

At the Hoophall International in London, England, St. Paul VI Catholic High School in Chantilly, Va., crushed Christ the King Regional High School in Middle Village, N.Y., by a score of 56-31, per an article from Jordan Divens, the national basketball editor of MaxPreps.

According to MaxPreps, St. Paul VI is ranked No. 3, Archbishop Stepinac is No. 16, Christ the King is No. 18, and Cardinal Hayes is No. 25.

Syracuse basketball recruits are competing in top-flight games in the early season.

Per reports, Cardinal Hayes was led by 2024 five-star guard Ian Jackson, who had 22 points, and 2024 four-star shooting guard Elijah Moore, who tallied 16 points.

Both the 6-foot-6 Jackson and the 6-foot-4 Moore received scholarship offers from the Orange this past April. Moore has taken an official visit and an unofficial visit to the Hill in recent months.

I don’t think that Syracuse basketball is a significant contender for Jackson these days, but by all accounts, Moore is a high-priority recruiting target for the ‘Cuse in the junior class.

Moore’s offer sheet includes Illinois, Arkansas, Miami, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Alabama, California, Seton Hall, Xavier, Connecticut, St. John’s, VCU, Mississippi State, Bryant, Temple, Saint Peter’s, Columbia, Fordham, Saint Joseph’s and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.
