Welcome to Beer Can Appreciation Day!
Where do you like the beer you drink to come from? Do you prefer draft, bottles, or cans? On January 24, 1935, Krueger's Finest Beer and Krueger's Cream Ale became the first beers to be sold in cans, and it is on this anniversary that we celebrate Beer Can Appreciation Day.
The American Can Company began working on canning beer in 1909, but they were not successful at the time. They found that carbonation was too much for cans, leading them to sometimes explode. They eventually found a remedy: coating the inside of cans as they did with kegs.

SU gets chance at much-needed big win vs. UNC (what to know) (PS; $; Waters)
If Syracuse wants to get into the NCAA Tournament conversation, the Orange needs a win that’ll get some people talking.
Syracuse (13-7 overall, 6-3 in the ACC) will have the opportunity to get some tongues wagging tonight as it hosts the North Carolina Tar Heels (14-6, 6-3) at the JMA Wireless Dome.
Syracuse and North Carolina might be tied in the ACC standings, but they’re far apart in terms of their post-season aspirations as witnessed by the NCAA’s NET rankings. Syracuse is at No. 101 in the NET, while North Carolina sits at No. 32.
Tonight will start a criticial stretch of games for Syracuse.
Syracuse is 1-5 against opponents in Quad 1 or 2. North Carolina (NET of 32) would be a Quad 2 opponent for Syracuse at home. Virginia Tech (55th in the NET) on Saturday will be a Quad 1 road game. Then Virginia (13th) will be another Quad 1 foe at the Dome next Monday.
Syracuse could move within earshot of the NCAA Tournament conversation if it can notch two or three wins in the next week.
North Carolina has won nine of its last 11 games, including an 80-69 win over N.C. State on Saturday. However, the Tar Heels are 4-6 outside of Chapel Hill and 1-4 in true road games.

Tar Heels rejoiced after the final horn sounded in their 80-69 win over NC State. The end of the game got quite chippy, especially after the injury to guard Terquavion Smith and the flagrant foul against Caleb Love.
Syracuse won’t have quite the same bad blood, but it can have just as much bad basketball. UNC has not hit its high gear shooting the basketball as it had at the end of last season, and the Carrier Dome, ahem—excuse me, the JMA Wireless Dome isn’t the best place to get right.
Syracuse has an identical conference record to Carolina and has lost to similar teams. Here are three things to watch as the Tar Heels and Orange look to climb to the top of the third-place ACC pile.
Syracuse won’t foul as much as the Wolfpack—nobody really does. This means UNC needs to convert chances, especially at the rim. How well Armando Bacot can find space and either turn and score, or post and pass to cutters (as he did on a nice layup for RJ Davis) will dictate terms. Pete Nance driving into the paint (as he did with an alarming dunk on Ernest Ross) would also be a welcome addition.

Opponent preview: Everything to know about 14-6 North Carolina (DO; Vasudevan)
Syracuse has made a complete 180 from this time last season, flipping its conference record from 3-6 to 6-3. With an NCAA Tournament appearance still on the table for SU, it needs some much-needed Quadrant I wins to woo the NCAA Selection Committee before March, and Tuesday night against North Carolina provides the perfect opportunity.
The Tar Heels have won three-straight games and nine of their last 11, looking to win their third game ever in Syracuse. Armando Bacot, the Atlantic Coast Conference’s reigning Player of the Week, has been on a tear with 13 double-doubles so far this season.
Here’s what else to know about North Carolina (14-6, 6-3 ACC) before the matchup:
“We put ourselves in a great position with 8-10 seconds to go,” head coach Jim Boeheim said after that game. “I’ll have Love taking that shot all night.”
SU couldn’t keep up its strong play in overtime, getting on the board for the first time off a free throw from Swider with 2:46 left in the period. North Carolina scored eight points during Syracuse’s scoreless stretch and after Swider fouled out with a minute left, the Tar Heels coasted to an 88-79 win.
UNC faced some issues at the beginning of the season, dropping four straight games, including a quadruple-overtime 103-101 loss to Alabama. It has struggled against the best teams in the country, currently 1-6 against Quadrant I teams, according to BetMGM.
The Tar Heels rebounded at the end of non conference play, bringing momentum into ACC play with the third-best scoring offense in the league. They’ve got an adjusted efficiency of 115.4 as well, which ranks 16th nationally, according to KenPom.
Bacot is back for North Carolina, averaging a team-high 17.8 points per game and 11.6 rebounds per game. He leads the ACC in rebounds per game. Bacot scored 17 points against SU last season along with 18 total rebounds — nine offensive and nine defensive. Love and RJ Davis also returned this season, fronting UNC’s production from deep with 37 and 38 3-pointers made so far, respectively.

Syracuse has 11 games left in the regular season, most recently defeating Georgia Tech 80-63 in Atlanta, Georgia. Joe Girard III scored 28 points in the matchup, eclipsing 20 points for the fifth time in seven games. SU brought a full-court press after struggling against GT in the first half, leading to a 17-0 run which gave Syracuse complete control over the afternoon.
The Orange are back at the JMA Wireless Dome for its only matchup this year against North Carolina, who have been on the brink of entering the AP’s top-25 rankings for the last few weeks. UNC also leads the Atlantic Coast Conference in scoring offense this season, averaging 79.6 points per game.

This Syracuse-UNC matchup came at the perfect time. SU proved it could hang around against Virginia and then Miami, two pillars of the ACC, and now the Orange are ready to conquer North Carolina, a team that has matched its success so far in the conference.
The cards are there for Syracuse to win, but North Carolina has the stronger hand. While Girard erupted to the tune of 28 points at Georgia Tech, RJ Davis was only two points shy of that against a much better NC State squad. Armando Bacot, the reigning ACC Player of the Week, collected over 15 rebounds in UNC’s last three games and recorded his 11th and 12th double-doubles during that span. Meanwhile, the Tar Heels’ defense has held teams to under 70 points for five-straight games.
On top of that, North Carolina gets 23.4% of its scoring from the free-throw line, ranking 11th-best nationally, according to KenPom. It forced the Wolfpack into foul trouble throughout its most recent matchup, something that could be detrimental against SU with foul-prone Jesse Edwards.
Syracuse has played its best basketball this season as of late, but it’s heading into a brutal three-game stretch. Unless the Orange surprise North Carolina, this loss could be the start of another descent out of NCAA Tournament contention.

UNC is probably the better team in this game, but it’s also very beatable. In past years, the Tar Heels have played a run-and-gun style oriented around quick offense, offensive rebounds and strong 3-point shooting. This North Carolina team, despite being ranked preseason No. 1, is still the 24th-best team in the country, per KenPom, but is a bad 3-point shooting team (283th-best nationally) and doesn’t crash the offensive glass like vintage Tar Heels teams under Roy Williams (their offensive rebounding percentage is 146th in the country). UNC plays at a much slower tempo than normal, too.

An SU basketball recruit in the Class of 2024 sets commitment date (PS; $; Waters)
Elijah Moore, a top prospect in the 2024 recruiting class, will announce his college decision this Saturday.
Moore will make the announcement at Baychester Middle School in the Bronx at noon on Saturday, he told TiptonEdits.com on Monday.
Syracuse is one of five schools on Moore’s final list, which also includes Alabama, Arkansas, Miami and Oklahoma State.
Moore, a 6-foot-3 shooting guard at Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx, is expected to attend Syracuse’s game against North Carolina on Tuesday night as a guest of Syracuse fan Adam Weitsman.
Weitsman has been discussing NIL possibilities with Moore and his family.
Moore, who is ranked No. 73 in the ‘24 class by 247Sports and No. 82 by ESPN.com, previously took an official visit to Syracuse in October. He attended SU’s basketball media day and Orange Madness at the JMA Wireless Dome.
Another Class of ‘24 recruit was supposed to be at Syracuse’s game against North Carolina on Tuesday, but those plans have changed.
Johnuel “Boogie’' Fland, a 6-2 point guard at Archbishop Stepinac High School, had been expected to be at the game with his family. Syracuse recently extended a scholarship offer to Fland, who is ranked eighth in the ‘24 class by ESPN.com.
However, Fland will not be in attendance due to a conflict with his high school’s schedule.
In other recruiting news, Marcus Adams, a 6-foot-8 junior at Narbonne High School in Harbor City, California, told 247Sports.com he would take an official visit to Syracuse on Feb. 17-19. Syracuse plays Duke at the JMA Dome on Saturday, Feb. 18.

Syracuse Basketball: Adam Weitsman offers NIL deal to 4-star Jalil Bethea (itlh; Adler)
Businessman, philanthropist and top SU booster Adam Weitsman tells me that he has offered a lucrative name, image and likeness deal to 2024 four-star guard Jalil Bethea from the Philadelphia area, who holds a Syracuse basketball offer and has officially visited the Hill.
Adam Weitsman tells me that his NIL offer to the 6-foot-4 Bethea is a six-figure offer with incentives that could grow this deal to seven figures. Weitsman declined to provide specifics about the length of this proposed NIL deal to Bethea.
As we noted in another recent piece, Bethea has made one of the largest jumps nationwide in new 2024 rankings from On3. That recruiting service moved him from No. 128 overall to No. 72 overall.
Numerous recruiting Web sites rate Bethea as a four-star player and within the top 80 of the 2024 cycle. Personally, I’m extremely high on Jalil Bethea.
In late September, the Orange coaching staff offered a scholarship to Bethea. He took an official visit to the ‘Cuse about a month later, and reports at the time indicated his trip to Central New York went quite well.
Recruiting services say that Bethea holds more than 20 offers from a range of high-major programs, including Notre Dame, St. John’s, Villanova, UCLA, Seton Hall, Miami, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, VCU, Mississippi State and Temple, among others.

Despite his very good performance Tofas Bursa lost 81-94 on the road to the much lower-ranked (#13) Buyukcekmece. Ennis was the top scorer with 27 points. He also added 4 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals in 34 minutes. It was Tofas Bursa's first loss after three consecutive victories. The Regular Season already ended. It's Ennis' first season with the team. Ennis has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages 15.3ppg, 3.8rpg, 4.9apg and 1.9spg in 12 games he played so far.
#2. Jerami Grant (6'8''-F-1994, played in 2012-14, plays in the NBA) was not able to help the Portland Trail Blazers (21-25) in their last game on Thursday. Despite Grant's very good performance the Portland Trail Blazers (21-25) were defeated 105-95 in Philadelphia by the 76ers. He was the second best scorer with 24 points. Grant also added 5 rebounds. It's Grant's first season with the team. This year he has very high stats. Grant averages 21.6ppg, 4.3rpg and 2.4apg.
#3. Brandon Triche (6'4''-G-1991, played in 2009-13, currently in United Arab Emirates) led his UAE team Shabab Al Ahli to an easy victory against the eighth-ranked Al Bashaer (0-4) crushing them 92-61 in the West Asia Super League on Tuesday night. He scored 15 points, grabbed 8 rebounds and dished 5 assists in 30 minutes. Shabab Al Ahli Dubai (4-0) is placed first in the West Asia Super League. So far his team won all four games in the Regular Season. There are only two games left until the end of the West Asia Super League Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. Triche has relatively good stats this year 13.8ppg, 5.3rpg, 3.5apg and 1.5spg in four games.
#4. Andrew White III (6'7''-F-1993, played in 2016-17, plays pro in Australia) was the major contributor in a Brisbane Bullets' victory against the league outsider Illawarra Hawks (3-22) 103-86 in the Australian NBL in Saturday night's game. White III recorded 18 points. Brisbane Bullets (8-17) are placed second from the bottom (#9) in the NBL. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. There are only three games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game is very crucial. It's White III's first season with the team. This year he averages 8.4ppg and 2.9rpg.

O'Shae Brissett (6'7''-F/G-1998, played in 2017-19, plays in the NBA) was not able to secure a victory for the Indiana Pacers (23-25) in their game against the Oklahoma City Thunder (23-24) in the NBA. He recorded 5 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists in 23 minutes. The Indiana Pacers (23-25) were badly defeated126-106 in Oklahoma City by the Thunder. It was Indiana Pacers' seventh consecutive loss in a row. This year Brissett averages 5.9ppg and 3.4rpg in 42 games.

Sportsman’s Expo, B’ville’s Big Chill, Chris Young: 11 things to do this week in CNY (PS; $; Croyle)
Although he has been slow to make an impactful visit to this portion of Upstate New York yet, “Old Man Winter” has got to make an appearance sooner or later. This would be a great week. Baldwinsville will be hosting its “Big Chill” with brave folks plunging into the Seneca River, and Beaver Lake is having an event for youngsters where they can discover nature’s beauty. Of course, if you are not a fan of the winter chill you can stay in and enjoy the warmth at the Sportsman’s Expo at the New York State Fairgrounds, Chris Young at the Turning Stone, a production of “Kinky Boots,” music by Symphoria, and more.

Tar Heels rejoiced after the final horn sounded in their 80-69 win over NC State. The end of the game got quite chippy, especially after the injury to guard Terquavion Smith and the flagrant foul against Caleb Love.
Syracuse won’t have quite the same bad blood, but it can have just as much bad basketball. UNC has not hit its high gear shooting the basketball as it had at the end of last season, and the Carrier Dome, ahem—excuse me, the JMA Wireless Dome isn’t the best place to get right.
Syracuse has an identical conference record to Carolina and has lost to similar teams. Here are three things to watch as the Tar Heels and Orange look to climb to the top of the third-place ACC pile.
Can Carolina shoot the ball better?
Carolina emerged from their NC State clash with an emphatic win, but without a good way forward for their game tomorrow against Syracuse. As a team, UNC shot poorly from the field (37%) and especially from deep (22%), but did shoot a sterling 36-39 from the free throw line (92%).Syracuse won’t foul as much as the Wolfpack—nobody really does. This means UNC needs to convert chances, especially at the rim. How well Armando Bacot can find space and either turn and score, or post and pass to cutters (as he did on a nice layup for RJ Davis) will dictate terms. Pete Nance driving into the paint (as he did with an alarming dunk on Ernest Ross) would also be a welcome addition.

Opponent preview: Everything to know about 14-6 North Carolina (DO; Vasudevan)
Syracuse has made a complete 180 from this time last season, flipping its conference record from 3-6 to 6-3. With an NCAA Tournament appearance still on the table for SU, it needs some much-needed Quadrant I wins to woo the NCAA Selection Committee before March, and Tuesday night against North Carolina provides the perfect opportunity.
The Tar Heels have won three-straight games and nine of their last 11, looking to win their third game ever in Syracuse. Armando Bacot, the Atlantic Coast Conference’s reigning Player of the Week, has been on a tear with 13 double-doubles so far this season.
Here’s what else to know about North Carolina (14-6, 6-3 ACC) before the matchup:

Cole Swider erupted for 36 points as Syracuse surprised North Carolina near the end of conference play last season. The Orange led by one with 15.9 seconds left in regulation, but an inbounds pass bounced off of Joe Girard III and landed out of bounds, giving UNC a chance to respond. The Tar Heels’ Caleb Love got off a deep 3-pointer, though Girard’s corner jumper in the final second sent the game to an extra period.“We put ourselves in a great position with 8-10 seconds to go,” head coach Jim Boeheim said after that game. “I’ll have Love taking that shot all night.”
SU couldn’t keep up its strong play in overtime, getting on the board for the first time off a free throw from Swider with 2:46 left in the period. North Carolina scored eight points during Syracuse’s scoreless stretch and after Swider fouled out with a minute left, the Tar Heels coasted to an 88-79 win.

For the first two victories of that streak, the Tar Heels easily handled Boston College and Louisville — both teams gave the Orange trouble earlier this year. They most recently defeated NC State, holding the sixth-best offense in the ACC to 69 points.UNC faced some issues at the beginning of the season, dropping four straight games, including a quadruple-overtime 103-101 loss to Alabama. It has struggled against the best teams in the country, currently 1-6 against Quadrant I teams, according to BetMGM.
The Tar Heels rebounded at the end of non conference play, bringing momentum into ACC play with the third-best scoring offense in the league. They’ve got an adjusted efficiency of 115.4 as well, which ranks 16th nationally, according to KenPom.
Bacot is back for North Carolina, averaging a team-high 17.8 points per game and 11.6 rebounds per game. He leads the ACC in rebounds per game. Bacot scored 17 points against SU last season along with 18 total rebounds — nine offensive and nine defensive. Love and RJ Davis also returned this season, fronting UNC’s production from deep with 37 and 38 3-pointers made so far, respectively.

Syracuse has 11 games left in the regular season, most recently defeating Georgia Tech 80-63 in Atlanta, Georgia. Joe Girard III scored 28 points in the matchup, eclipsing 20 points for the fifth time in seven games. SU brought a full-court press after struggling against GT in the first half, leading to a 17-0 run which gave Syracuse complete control over the afternoon.
The Orange are back at the JMA Wireless Dome for its only matchup this year against North Carolina, who have been on the brink of entering the AP’s top-25 rankings for the last few weeks. UNC also leads the Atlantic Coast Conference in scoring offense this season, averaging 79.6 points per game.

This Syracuse-UNC matchup came at the perfect time. SU proved it could hang around against Virginia and then Miami, two pillars of the ACC, and now the Orange are ready to conquer North Carolina, a team that has matched its success so far in the conference.
The cards are there for Syracuse to win, but North Carolina has the stronger hand. While Girard erupted to the tune of 28 points at Georgia Tech, RJ Davis was only two points shy of that against a much better NC State squad. Armando Bacot, the reigning ACC Player of the Week, collected over 15 rebounds in UNC’s last three games and recorded his 11th and 12th double-doubles during that span. Meanwhile, the Tar Heels’ defense has held teams to under 70 points for five-straight games.
On top of that, North Carolina gets 23.4% of its scoring from the free-throw line, ranking 11th-best nationally, according to KenPom. It forced the Wolfpack into foul trouble throughout its most recent matchup, something that could be detrimental against SU with foul-prone Jesse Edwards.
Syracuse has played its best basketball this season as of late, but it’s heading into a brutal three-game stretch. Unless the Orange surprise North Carolina, this loss could be the start of another descent out of NCAA Tournament contention.

UNC is probably the better team in this game, but it’s also very beatable. In past years, the Tar Heels have played a run-and-gun style oriented around quick offense, offensive rebounds and strong 3-point shooting. This North Carolina team, despite being ranked preseason No. 1, is still the 24th-best team in the country, per KenPom, but is a bad 3-point shooting team (283th-best nationally) and doesn’t crash the offensive glass like vintage Tar Heels teams under Roy Williams (their offensive rebounding percentage is 146th in the country). UNC plays at a much slower tempo than normal, too.

An SU basketball recruit in the Class of 2024 sets commitment date (PS; $; Waters)
Elijah Moore, a top prospect in the 2024 recruiting class, will announce his college decision this Saturday.
Moore will make the announcement at Baychester Middle School in the Bronx at noon on Saturday, he told TiptonEdits.com on Monday.
Syracuse is one of five schools on Moore’s final list, which also includes Alabama, Arkansas, Miami and Oklahoma State.
Moore, a 6-foot-3 shooting guard at Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx, is expected to attend Syracuse’s game against North Carolina on Tuesday night as a guest of Syracuse fan Adam Weitsman.
Weitsman has been discussing NIL possibilities with Moore and his family.
Moore, who is ranked No. 73 in the ‘24 class by 247Sports and No. 82 by ESPN.com, previously took an official visit to Syracuse in October. He attended SU’s basketball media day and Orange Madness at the JMA Wireless Dome.
Another Class of ‘24 recruit was supposed to be at Syracuse’s game against North Carolina on Tuesday, but those plans have changed.
Johnuel “Boogie’' Fland, a 6-2 point guard at Archbishop Stepinac High School, had been expected to be at the game with his family. Syracuse recently extended a scholarship offer to Fland, who is ranked eighth in the ‘24 class by ESPN.com.
However, Fland will not be in attendance due to a conflict with his high school’s schedule.
In other recruiting news, Marcus Adams, a 6-foot-8 junior at Narbonne High School in Harbor City, California, told 247Sports.com he would take an official visit to Syracuse on Feb. 17-19. Syracuse plays Duke at the JMA Dome on Saturday, Feb. 18.

Businessman, philanthropist and top SU booster Adam Weitsman tells me that he has offered a lucrative name, image and likeness deal to 2024 four-star guard Jalil Bethea from the Philadelphia area, who holds a Syracuse basketball offer and has officially visited the Hill.
Adam Weitsman tells me that his NIL offer to the 6-foot-4 Bethea is a six-figure offer with incentives that could grow this deal to seven figures. Weitsman declined to provide specifics about the length of this proposed NIL deal to Bethea.
As we noted in another recent piece, Bethea has made one of the largest jumps nationwide in new 2024 rankings from On3. That recruiting service moved him from No. 128 overall to No. 72 overall.
Numerous recruiting Web sites rate Bethea as a four-star player and within the top 80 of the 2024 cycle. Personally, I’m extremely high on Jalil Bethea.
Adam Weitsman has offered a huge NIL deal to four-star guard Jalil Bethea, who is a Syracuse basketball target.
Bethea is a junior at Archbishop Wood Catholic High School in Warminster, Pa., near Philadelphia. In grassroots basketball, he runs with one of the best AAU teams across the country, the Philadelphia-based Team Final in Nike’s EYBL league.In late September, the Orange coaching staff offered a scholarship to Bethea. He took an official visit to the ‘Cuse about a month later, and reports at the time indicated his trip to Central New York went quite well.
Recruiting services say that Bethea holds more than 20 offers from a range of high-major programs, including Notre Dame, St. John’s, Villanova, UCLA, Seton Hall, Miami, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, VCU, Mississippi State and Temple, among others.

He also added 4 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals in 34 minutes. It was Tofas Bursa's first loss after three consecutive victories. The Regular Season already ended. It's Ennis' first season with the team. Ennis has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages 15.3ppg, 3.8rpg, 4.9apg and 1.9spg in 12 games he played so far.
#2. Jerami Grant (6'8''-F-1994, played in 2012-14, plays in the NBA) was not able to help the Portland Trail Blazers (21-25) in their last game on Thursday. Despite Grant's very good performance the Portland Trail Blazers (21-25) were defeated 105-95 in Philadelphia by the 76ers. He was the second best scorer with 24 points. Grant also added 5 rebounds. It's Grant's first season with the team. This year he has very high stats. Grant averages 21.6ppg, 4.3rpg and 2.4apg.

Brandon Triche (6'4''-G-1991, played in 2009-13, currently in United Arab Emirates) led his UAE team Shabab Al Ahli to an easy victory against the eighth-ranked Al Bashaer (0-4) crushing them 92-61 in the West Asia Super League on Tuesday night. He scored 15 points, grabbed 8 rebounds and dished 5 assists in 30 minutes. Shabab Al Ahli Dubai (4-0) is placed first in the West Asia Super League. So far his team won all four games in the Regular Season. There are only two games left until the end of the West Asia Super League Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. Triche has relatively good stats this year 13.8ppg, 5.3rpg, 3.5apg and 1.5spg in four games.

Andrew White III (6'7''-F-1993, played in 2016-17, plays pro in Australia) was the major contributor in a Brisbane Bullets' victory against the league outsider Illawarra Hawks (3-22) 103-86 in the Australian NBL in Saturday night's game. MBB: What's Wrong with the Hokies?
The Virginia Tech Hokies Men's Basketball team started out the season 11-1, with wins over Penn State, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma State and Dayton. Then they traveled to Chestnull Hill, MA to play the Boston College Eagles, and the wheels fell off. Not only did the Hokies lose to the Eagles in overtime (final score: 65-70), but they also lost the heart and soul of the team, guard Hunter Cattoor. Coming as it did on the heels of the injury to true freshman shooting guard Rodney Rice, the injury to Cattor left Virginia Tech extremely thin on the perimeter.Last season, the Hokies shot .392 from three point range; so far this season, Virginia Tech players are averaging .340 from the arc. That difference - 39 ppg from 3 last year, just 34 ppg this year - has made a big difference in the win/loss record.

Florida State and Miami both had their streaks snapped, otherwise they'd be on this list (probably Virginia Tech as well).Most of you can't remember a time when Ohio State went unranked a whole season.
Every team on that list won a national championship in football during their streak except for Wisconsin, Oregon, Oklahoma State, and Notre Dame. However, Oregon and Notre Dame at least played in a title game.

Sportsman’s Expo, B’ville’s Big Chill, Chris Young: 11 things to do this week in CNY (PS; $; Croyle)
Although he has been slow to make an impactful visit to this portion of Upstate New York yet, “Old Man Winter” has got to make an appearance sooner or later. This would be a great week. Baldwinsville will be hosting its “Big Chill” with brave folks plunging into the Seneca River, and Beaver Lake is having an event for youngsters where they can discover nature’s beauty. Of course, if you are not a fan of the winter chill you can stay in and enjoy the warmth at the Sportsman’s Expo at the New York State Fairgrounds, Chris Young at the Turning Stone, a production of “Kinky Boots,” music by Symphoria, and more.

Winter Seed Sowing
Gardening in Syracuse during the winter? It sounds crazy but this event at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo will get you started. Organized by Cornell Cooperative Extension Gardeners and SUNY ESF, you are invited to stop by the zoo’s Education classroom between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Wednesday and start your own winter seed sowing jug. They will have all the materials you will need to plant vegetables or perennial flowers. Sow your seeds and take them home to grow.
