Welcome to National Creativity Day!

National Creativity Day was founded by Hal Croasmun and ScreenwritingU "to celebrate the imaginative spirits everywhere and to encourage them to keep creating." It is a day to nurture your creativity, to be imaginative, and to support the creativity of others. There are all types of creative people, such as artists, writers, photographers, musicians, and filmmakers. But one doesn't need to be an expert in a field in order to be creative—those who just dabble in creative pursuits can benefit from doing so. Kurt Vonnegut once wrote:

The arts are not a way to make a living. They are a very human way of making life more bearable. Practicing an art, no matter how well or badly, is a way to make your soul grow, for heaven's sake. Sing in the shower. Dance to the radio. Tell stories. Write a poem to a friend, even a lousy poem. Do it as well as you possible can. You will get an enormous reward. You will have created something.

Boeheim, fresh from interesting pro season abroad, missed his people (PS; $; Ditota)

Jimmy Boeheim can’t decide what he’ll do first once he arrives home from Prague.

Maybe he’ll hit a Chick-fil-A as soon as he leaves the Syracuse airport. Maybe he’ll spend time in Wegmans making small talk with strangers, thrilled to be communicating in his native language. He knows he will quickly avail himself of ranch dressing, a favorite condiment he expects to soon slather on everything he eats to make up for nearly 10 months abroad, where nobody – inexplicably – understands the joy of ranch.

Boeheim, who turned 25 earlier this month, finished his first professional basketball season in Europe on Saturday. His first-place Czech team, Nymburk, lost game seven in the league’s championship series, then secured third place in a best-of-three series.

Syracuse Basketball: 4-star commit Donnie Freeman eyes Peach Jam title (itlh; Adler)

Over the Memorial Day holiday weekend, Syracuse basketball 2024 commit Donnie Freeman and his AAU teammates produced a perfect record, and now they’ll turn their sights toward a summer championship in grassroots basketball.

This weekend, the four-star power forward and top-40 national prospect in the junior cycle put forth some terrific performances as his squad, the Washington, D.C.-based Team Takeover, went 5-0 during the Nike EYBL fourth and final regular-season session this spring at the Memphis Sports & Events Center in Memphis, Tenn.

Led by the 6-foot-9 Freeman and several other highly rated 2024 prospects, Team Takeover has moved its overall record on the EYBL circuit to 14-3.

Team Takeover, whose stacked 17U roster also includes two Orange recruits, will likely be deemed one of the favorites to cut down the nets at the prestigious Peach Jam tournament, which will take place from July 3 to July 9 in North Augusta, S.C., to determine the winner of this season’s EYBL league.

Syracuse basketball pledge Donnie Freeman had himself a weekend during the fourth EYBL session.

Donnie Freeman, a standout rising senior at St. John’s College High School in D.C., verbally committed to the ‘Cuse over other finalists Alabama, Iowa, Texas and Georgia Tech a few weeks ago.

In a recent podcast interview, Freeman said that he’s trying to help recruit three other 2024 prospects to join him and four-star NYC shooting guard Elijah Moore in this Orange class. They are four-star center Patrick Ngongba II, four-star wing Caleb Williams and four-star guard Jalil Bethea.

The 6-foot-10 Ngongba and the 6-foot-7 Williams were both offered scholarships by the ‘Cuse coaching staff in late April and compete alongside Donnie Freeman for Team Takeover.

Syracuse Basketball: 4-star Kiyan Anthony can push into top 35, per expert (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball recruit Kiyan Anthony has earned high praise of late from national analysts and scouts for his performances this spring on the AAU circuit.

The 6-foot-5 Anthony, a four-star shooting guard, is already a top-70 national prospect and in the top 20 at his position within the 2025 class, but the son of ‘Cuse legend and recently retired NBA star Carmelo Anthony has the potential to rise further in the sophomore cycle’s rankings, according to experts.

In recent weeks, Kiyan Anthony has witnessed his scholarship offer sheet expand. His list of offers is likely to further grow at an accelerated rate come mid-June, when the contact period opens up in his class, enabling college coaches to initiate direct communication with 2025 prospects.

Orange coaches offered Anthony last November. Media reports have said that the ‘Cuse coaching staff was in attendance late last month for Kiyan Anthony when he competed in AAU games amid NCAA live periods.

Syracuse basketball four-star target Kiyan Anthony has the attention of many college coaches.

This spring in grassroots basketball, Anthony has played quite well. While just a rising junior in high school, he is already known for his long-range shooting. But more recently, Kiyan Anthony has displayed a more comprehensive all-around game, getting to the rim and finishing through contact, showing off his athleticism, and earning positive comments from experts for his defense and rebounding.

As he has starred for the 16U squad of the Baltimore-based Team Melo in Nike’s EYBL league, he has received more recent scholarship offers from schools such as Illinois, Indiana, Tennessee, Seton Hall, UMass and Providence.

His offer sheet also includes Syracuse basketball, Memphis, Bryant, George Mason and Manhattan.

Dushawn London, a national analyst with 247Sports, wrote in an article that Anthony “has made massive strides” in recent months. Later on in the same piece, London said, “Kiyan is emerging as a national level prospect who has the attention of college coaches. It’s not unrealistic to think that his growing skillset and NBA genetics will make him a collegiate star and a pro prospect.”

Syracuse Basketball: New big-man target poised to enter national rankings (itlh; Adler)

New Syracuse basketball recruiting target Nikola Bundalo is set to enter the national rankings for his class in the near future, according to experts.

On May 10, top scout Andrew Slater sent out a tweet that the Orange coaching staff had offered a scholarship to Bundalo, a 6-foot-9 power forward in the sophomore cycle who attends Green High School in Uniontown, Ohio.

The 247Sports recruiting service plans to update its 2025 national rankings in the near future, and Bundalo should be making his ratings debut when that refresh occurs, per national analysts with 247Sports.

Some of the prospects set to make their debut when we update 2025 national rankings:

Niko Bundalo | @wildcatselect
Moustapha Thiam | @SE_Elite_3SSB

This spring, Bundalo is receiving high praise from analysts and scouts for his play on the AAU circuit, where he is a member of the Charleston, W.Va.-based Wildcat Select in the Adidas 3SSB league.

Syracuse basketball recently got into the mix for fast-rising 2025 big man Nikola Bundalo.

Besides the ‘Cuse, other recent offers that have arrived for Bundalo include Georgetown and Cincinnati. His early offer sheet also features Illinois, Iowa, Ohio State, Seton Hall, Xavier, Rutgers, Kent State and Bryant.

Team Final, led by Syracuse basketball priority target Jalil Bethea, finished the EYBL regular season 16-1 to win the regular season title. Team Final clinched the crown with a 5-0 record in the Memphis session this weekend. Next up is Peach Jam, which takes place July 3-9 in North Augusta (SC).

Bethea averaged 17.8 points per game during this last session, including shooting over 48% from beyond the arc. Overall, Bethea has averaged 18.9 points per game during all four sessions of the EYBL regular season. He has shot over 42% from three point range as well and 49.8% from the floor overall. Bethea led Team Final in shot attempts, three point attempts and scoring.

Also on Team Final are Baylor point guard commit Robert Wright, Georgetown center commit Thomas Sorber and four star uncommitted guard Ahmad Nowell.

"They're great," Bethea said of his relationship with the Syracuse staff previously. "I hear from them mostly every day. When I took the visit, it was real cool. I felt real comfortable. It was basically like another home. Coach McNamara says, 'my guy. Keep being great. I can't wait to see you in Orange.'"

https://www.si.com/college/syracuse/basketball/syracuse-connection-to-2023-nba-finals (SI; McAllister)

With the Miami Heat's game seven win over the Boston Celtics Monday night, the NBA Finals are set. The Heat will square off with the Denver Nuggets, with the winner hoisting the Larry O'Brien Trophy as NBA Champions. What does this have to do with Syracuse? There actually is a connection to the Orange.

Denver Nuggets head coach Michael Malone's father is Brendan Malone. Brendan Malone was an assistant coach at Syracuse, under Hall of Fame head coach Jim Boeheim, from 1978-84. It is the longest stretch in one spot during his nearly 50 year coaching career.

Brendan Malone started coaching in 1967 as an assistant with Power Memorial Academy. He was an assistant in college through his stint with the Orange before becoming head coach of Rhode Island from 1984-86. Malone would spend the rest of his career in the NBA as an assistant and head coach.

Malone was an assistant with the New York Knicks, Detroit Pistons, Indiana Pacers, Cleveland Cavaliers and Orlando Magic. He was a head coach of the Toronto Raptors (their first head coach) and Cleveland Cavaliers.

Brendan's son, Michael, has been a coach for 30 years in college and pro. He was an assistant with Friends School of Baltimore, Oakland, Providence and Manhattan. In the NBA, he was an assistant with the Knicks, Cavaliers, New Orleans Hornets and Golden State Warriors. In 2013, Malone was named head coach of the Sacramento Kings before becoming the Nuggets head coach in 2015.

St. Joe’s Amp 2023 concert lineup: More shows, less diversity than other NY amphitheaters (PS; Herbert)

How many concerts are coming to the St. Joseph’s Health Amphitheater at Lakeview this summer? More than most Upstate New York amphitheaters, but with less diversity on the lineup.

The 2023 St. Joe’s Amp schedule currently has 22 shows booked, up from 20 last year. By comparison, Bethel Woods Center for the Arts has 20 concerts scheduled this summer, Darien Lake has 19, the Artpark in Lewiston has 14 amphitheater shows, and CMAC in Canandaigua has 14; only the historic Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) has more total shows with 26.

But the Syracuse venue, formerly known as the Lakeview Amphitheater, has less diversity than its counterparts. Of 22 headlining acts at the Amp, 14 are rock, six are country, and two are pop. Only one artist is female (Shania Twain) and all of them are predominantly white acts. (Pentatonix and Kidz Bop, the two pop headliners, are multiracial groups with some female members.)
