Celebrated each year on June 27th, National Sunglasses Day gains popularity each year. Organizations like The Vision Council is one of the reasons. They inform people about the dangers of UV exposure and why wearing sunglasses should be more than to just make a fashion statement.

Jalil Bethea has plenty of options.
The versatile Archbishop Wood guard has received more than 30 basketball scholarship offers to schools ranging from UCLA to Syracuse to Kansas to LSU to Villanova and UConn. He's tentatively scheduled to visit Kansas on August 31 and LSU on September 9 after officially visiting Syracuse and Temple last fall. That could change following the July 3-9 Peach Jam in North Augusta, Georgia, when he hopes to narrow his list down to a final five. The plan is to make his decision in the fall, according to Wood coach John Mosco.
The entire Syracuse staff, including new head coach Adrian Autry and associate head coach Gerry McNamara, watched Bethea in a PIAA first-round win over Central Bucks East and then again in a quarterfinal victory over Coatesville in which he scored 31 points to surpass 1,000 for his career as a junior.
The slender 6-foot-4 Bethea continues to star in 2023 summer tournaments all over the country, including the Pangos All-American Camp in Las Vegas earlier this month. This week, he's at the NBA Top 100 in Orlando.
Bethea was named PIAA Class 6A first-team all-state and Philadelphia Catholic League Player of the Year in 2022-23 after averaging 23.2 points, 7.6 rebounds and 3.9 assists. He also shot 53.6 percent from the field and converted 89.2 percent of his free throws for the Vikings, who reached the Class 6A state semifinals.

Syracuse Basketball: Orange appears out of contention for 4-star big man (itlh; Adler)
Syracuse basketball, at this juncture, doesn’t appear to be a significant contender for 2024 four-star center Patrick Ngongba II, who hails from the Washington, D.C., area and is one of the fastest-rising prospects nationwide in his class.
The 6-foot-10 Ngongba was offered a scholarship by the Orange coaching staff in late April, around the time of NCAA live periods on the AAU circuit. Ngongba, not long after he received a ‘Cuse offer, said in at least one interview that he wanted to visit the Hill.
However, over the past two months, Ngongba has gone on some official visits to other schools, and he may take additional campus visits, according to recent interviews that he’s given with national recruiting analysts.
While things can ebb and flow in a high-school player’s recruiting process, lately, Ngongba has not mentioned potentially taking an official visit to the Orange. This leads me to believe that the ‘Cuse isn’t likely to prevail in Ngongba’s recruitment.

Ngongba is a rising senior at the powerhouse St. Paul VI Catholic High School in Chantilly, Va. In grassroots basketball, he plays for the Washington, D.C.-based Team Takeover in Nike’s EYBL league.
Donnie Freeman, a four-star power forward who verbally committed to the Orange in May, also suits up for Team Takeover’s 17U squad, which is one of the favorites to win the prestigious Peach Jam tournament early next month.
In the past, both Syracuse basketball head coach Adrian Autry and assistant coach Brenden Straughn were assistants with the Team Takeover program, and Autry also served as an assistant coach at St. Paul VI Catholic a while back.

With the 2023 NBA Draft now in the past, two Syracuse Orange men’s basketball players find themselves squarely in the middle of next year’s initial draft conversation.
That’s right: Judah Mintz - who decided to return to the Orange for his sophomore season after originally declaring for this year’s draft - is not the only Syracuse prospect to land a spot as a projected 2024 draftee.
Mintz and incoming transfer J.J. Starling are both considered early-to-mid second round picks, according to ESPN’s 2024 mock draft. Starling is expected to be selected 35th overall to the Houston Rockets, while Mintz is not too far behind, currently slated to go 42nd overall to the Los Angeles Clippers.
We know a lot can happen between now and next June, but, based on the potential two-way upside for the guard pairing, Orange fans should be excited. This new mock draft signals what is expected to be a very promising and productive Mintz-Starling backcourt.
Mintz averaged 16.3 points, 2.3 rebounds, 4.6 assists, and 1.8 steals per game in his freshman year, gradually improving his on-court IQ and feel for the game over the course of the season. From day one, however, he proved to be a legitimate isolation scorer, pesky defender and flashy point of attack guard.

Hundreds of people lined the sidewalk on Syracuse’s West Side earlier this month. There was a bounce house and free cotton candy for the kids. But that’s not what brought the crowd.
They were waiting for the stacks of Amazon boxes being unloaded from a rented U-Haul truck onto the vacant lot.
No one knew what was inside the boxes. It could be heavy. The people who came were prepared for anything. Some brought wagons for the walk home; one man had a suitcase with wheels.
It’s all part of the mystery: What’s in the box?
The mystery Amazon box giveaway June 11 was one of seven in Syracuse since April. At least 10,000 Amazon boxes have been given away to 10,000 families in Syracuse’s highest-poverty neighborhoods.
But this is no fancy corporate thing by the company that gets your socks to your mailbox in less than 24 hours. It’s a grassroots effort by neighborhood people who know how precious a good surprise is.

Months after reinstating Adirondack Line, Amtrak suspends North Country train service (PS; $; TNS)
Just three months after reopening the Adirondack train line from New York City to Montreal, Amtrak is suspending the service’s North Country stops, terminating the line in Albany.
In an announcement Monday from the U.S. national passenger rail company, Amtrak said the Canadian national rail carrier has implemented reduced speed regulations around Montreal due to heat and warping rails, and their trains numbered 68 and 69 will not be able to travel in the country until further notice.
The Adirondack Line is the only passenger rail line to visit the North Country stops north of the Fort Edward/Glens Falls station to Plattsburgh, and those stations will not see any train service until the Adirondack Line returns to Montreal. The line has been canceled effective immediately, with Monday’s trains the final to run north of Albany.
The line was entirely canceled for about three years during the Covid-19 pandemic, even after cross-border traffic resumed unimpeded in 2022. North Country legislators including Rep. Elise M. Stefanik, R-Willsboro, and Assemblyman D. Billy Jones, D-Chateaugay Lake, advocated strongly for Amtrak to resume the service and lauded the company’s decision to restart service on April 3 this year.
