Welcome to Victory Day!

Victory Day commemorates Japan's surrender to the Allies, which brought about the conclusion of World War II. The United States had called for Japan's surrender at the Potsdam Conference—a meeting which took place between the United States, The Soviet Union, and the United Kingdom in late July and early August of 1945. After Japan did not respond to the request, the United States dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima on August 6, and on Nagasaki on August 9; the Soviet Union also invaded Manchuria on August 9. Japan finally capitulated and accepted the Potsdam Declaration. On August 15 in Japan, which was August 14 in the United States, Japan's Emperor Hirohito gave a radio address urging his citizens to accept the surrender.

The Donnie Freeman Hype is Growing (orangefizz.net; Frank)

When Donnie Freeman committed to Syracuse back in the Spring, it was a sign that Adrian Autry was going to waste no time changing the way things were done under Jim Boeheim at SU. Freeman’s commitment was a sign that Autry’s vision was already put into play just months after he had taken over as head coach and a huge win for the program.

Freeman’s national ranking has only increased since he pledged his loyalty to the Orange, currently standing as the 31st-ranked player according to 247 Sports, 30th according to On3, 42nd according to ESPN, and 42nd on Rivals. The 6’9 190-pound forward has the body and athleticism of Syracuse forwards of the past.

Watching his film and highlights from this summer and he looks eerily similar to Jermai Grant, and Freeman might be at a more advanced stage than Grant was when he entered college. The two-year Orange forward just signed a 5 year, $160 million contract with the Portland Trail Blazers this offseason, to show you what potential Freeman has. Plus, Syracuse fans are not the only people hyping up the Washington, D.C. native as he enters his senior year.

Some eye-opening moments for Syracuse-commit Donnie Freeman at Nike Academy today. 6'9 wing has all kinds of length, defensive versatility and upside. Shot looked good in drills and made some impressive plays as a finisher and rim-protector. pic.twitter.com/Gphi9P1Nsb

Syracuse Basketball: If 5-star commits, 2024 class may be No. 1 nationally (itlh; Adler)

It’s a big “if,” but if 2024 five-star guard Jalil Bethea from the Philadelphia area ultimately were to verbally commit to Syracuse basketball, that could move the Orange’s rising-senior class into the top five nationally.

The ‘Cuse could even make a run at No. 1 overall, although that’s no guarantee. What’s more, the 6-foot-4 Bethea could propel the Orange’s 2024 class higher up in the short term, but over the longer term, where this ‘Cuse cycle would rate on a national scale would depend on the quality and quantity of its commits, along with what other teams do in 2024.

I get it. This column is pure speculation. But I’m still enjoying the topic. Bethea, a Syracuse basketball priority recruit for a long time, has a final five of the Orange, Alabama, Kansas, Miami and Villanova.

He received a scholarship offer from the ‘Cuse in September of 2022 and took an official visit to the Hill the following month. Bethea will reportedly take a second official visit to the SU campus this coming September.

Syracuse basketball is in the running for 2024 five-star guard Jalil Bethea.

At present, the Orange has two verbal commitments in its rising-senior cycle. In late January, four-star shooting guard Elijah Moore of New York City chose the ‘Cuse over Alabama, Arkansas, Miami and Oklahoma State. He is in the top 60 nationwide, per several recruiting services.

In May, four-star power forward Donnie Freeman of Washington, D.C., picked the Orange over Alabama, Iowa, Texas and Georgia Tech. He hovers around the top 20 to the top 40 of the 2024 class.

When I penned this column on Saturday, the Syracuse basketball 2024 cycle was No. 7 nationally per the industry-generated On3 Industry Ranking, No. 8 at and No. 11 via the industry-generated 247Sports Composite.

To reiterate, it’s no guarantee whatsoever that Bethea heads to the ‘Cuse. The competition is steep, although national analyst Rob Cassidy recently told me that Syracuse basketball is a realistic contender for Bethea.

Syracuse Basketball: All-American 5-star target moves to prep powerhouse (itlh; Adler)

One of the top players in the rising-junior class, who holds a Syracuse basketball scholarship offer, has moved on to an elite prep-school program for his upcoming 2023-24 campaign.
Not too long ago, consensus 2025 five-star shooting guard Darryn Peterson said on Twitter that he was transferring to Huntington Expression Prep, a top-notch squad located in Huntington, W.Va.

As a sophomore in 2022-23, Peterson was named a first-team All-American by MaxPreps as he averaged about 31 points, nine rebounds and three steals per contest for the Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.

Peterson, who is rated in the top four nationally in the 2025 cycle by all of the primary recruiting services, is a significant contender for the No. 1 overall ranking in his class. The Orange coaching staff offered him a scholarship in late April.

Syracuse basketball 2025 five-star recruit Darryn Peterson has a new high-school team.

Per the MaxPreps Web site, Huntington Expression Prep sported a 15-10 overall record during the 2022-23 season, and it competed versus some top-notch opponents, including the Southern California Academy, the Combine Academy, the Oak Hill Academy, the Calvary Christian Academy, the La Lumiere School and the IMG Academy.

Besides the ‘Cuse, Peterson’s offer sheet includes teams such as Louisville, Kansas, UCLA, Arizona State, Arkansas, Baylor, Indiana, Kentucky, LSU, Maryland, North Carolina, Ohio State, Pittsburgh, St. John’s, Texas, West Virginia, Xavier, Alabama, Cincinnati, Illinois, Kansas State, Michigan, TCU, Texas A&M and Washington State, among others.

What Would Be The Ideal 10-Team Conference For Syracuse Basketball?

Could Syracuse Make A Run At Cooper Flagg? (orangefizz.net; Griffin)

Here on August 12, 2023, Syracuse currently ranks 11th in 247 Sports’ Class of 2024 recruiting class rankings. That’s good for fourth-best in the ACC behind North Carolina, Duke, and NC State. While Elijah Moore and Donnie Freeman are both fantastic additions, your fishing net can never be too narrow. Add in both Judah Mintz and JJ Starling could be getting ready for the NBA season at this time next year, the net becomes even wider. Well, one of the best high school products in the country made a game-changing move earlier today, and he could potentially join Moore and Freeman because of it.

Cooper Flagg, arguably the best prospect in high school basketball, announces he’s reclassifying from 2025 to 2024. pic.twitter.com/0AEIOhiHhq
— Jeff Borzello (@jeffborzello) August 11, 2023
To say it will be a dogfight for Flagg’s services would be a massive understatement. 12 schools have entered the ring so far, including Duke, reigning champion UConn, Kansas, and Villanova. That’s the type of buzz Flagg has generated. Multiple blue bloods are interested, and thanks to his reclassification we could see more. But the Orange, at minimum, have a compelling case given the new regime and its early recruiting success.

Standing 6'9, with outstanding mobility and quickness getting off his feet, Cooper Flagg is first and foremost a devastating force defensively, capable of guarding 1-5. He's an excellent passer and finisher, a developing shooter, and makes the game easy playing a winning style. https://t.co/igQAbM0Wyd pic.twitter.com/ae0kLFUP62

Go ahead and read that again. “An excellent passer and finisher, a developing shooter”. When’s the last time those descriptions fit a Syracuse player above the height of 6-6? Heck, even had someone that big that was a threat from beyond the arc. He only attempted 52 threes this past season, but Adama Sanogo could knock down a long shot when he needed to during the Huskies’ championship run. Frankly, SU would be silly to not at least try.

The first potato served at the 2022 New York State Fair. (Charlie Miller | cmiller@syracuse.com)

NYS Fair Food Hall of Fame: Coming in at #7… A cheap vegetable?? (PS; Miller)

Only right-minded Central New Yorkers would endorse something so healthy being inducted to the State Fair Food Hall of Fame. You’d never see that in the oversized state carnivals in Texas or Minnesota. Yet today, in New York, we’re here celebrating yet another vegetable’s entry into our most celebrated Fair cuisines.

The humble baked potato comes in as the No. 7 New York State Fair food to earn its way into these hallowed halls of hunger.

“You shouldn’t be surprised that it’s this popular,” said Wahid Akl, who with his brothers-in-law David and Michael Tadros runs the potato booth in the Horticulture Building. “It’s cheap, and it’s healthy. What more do you want?”

The booth sells traditional baked potatoes, about 50,000 of them each year. It also offers sweet potatoes and tots, but the plain old starchy veggie outsells the alternative 10-to-1. About 90% of the baked potatoes sold were grown in New York. They use white taters, so the skin is thinner than Idaho potatoes you’ll find at a steakhouse.

Spuds costs $1 here, a true State Fair bargain. That’s why the line outside the permanent booth exceeds 100 minutes after the Fair’s main gates open at 10 a.m. each day. By lunchtime, you could face more than an hour wait to get served.

“I really felt like I hadn’t experienced a true visit to the Fair until I waited in line at the potato booth,” said Amy Robbins, the longtime radio host whose voice you’ll hear announcing time every 15 minutes at the fairgrounds. “Yes, you can buy baked potatoes elsewhere, but for the $1 that it costs with the option of a sweet potato or tater tots AND the toppings, that has to make your Hall of Fame. No wonder it’s been a part of the Fair experience since 1841.”

Dave Portnoy outside of Marino's Pizza & Restaurant in Schenectady, N.Y.

Dave Portnoy is now an Upstate NY resident. So what does he think of these Capital Region pizza shops? (PS; Healy Howard)

Barstool’s Dave Portnoy is touring Upstate New York with his “one bite” pizza reviews, and everyone knows the rules.

Portnoy, founder of the Barstool Sports media company, is known for his sports commentary, social media presence and, of course, pizza reviews. Those in the Capital Region may recognize him from his frequent visits to Saratoga Race Course.

In April, Portnoy became an Upstate NY resident after purchasing a $1.4 million home in Saratoga Springs that has backyard views of the Oklahoma Training Track.

It only makes sense that the media mogul is in his new neighborhood to explore the pizza shops of other nearby Capital Region cities such as Albany, Schenectady, Guilderland, Middle Grove and Malta.

Portnoy has paid visits to 11 pizza shops in the area (and counting) over the past two weeks. He even gave a bonus steak sandwich review to Morrette’s King Steakhouse in Schenectady, claiming the sign was too good to pass up.

Check out some of the reviews Portnoy has given so far:
