Welcome to Gettysburgh Address/Equal Opportunity Day!
The Gettysburg Address is celebrated today by various groups in different ways, and the holiday is given a few different names. It is informally named Gettysburg Address Day simply because it marks the anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's reading of the Gettysburg Address. It is also known as Equal Opportunity Day. This day was created by the National Urban League in 1956 and continues to be celebrated as such by the league and others, being proclaimed by politicians on multiple occasions. The third name given to the day is Dedication Day, having been formally named as such by a joint resolution of Congress in 1946. It continues to be celebrated as Dedication Day at the Gettysburg National Cemetery.

Syracuse Orange center Eddie Lampkin Jr. (44) holds the ball and then passes behind the back. Syracuse played Youngstown State, Saturday Nov 16, 2024 at the JMA Wireless Dome. Dennis Nett | dnett@syracuse.comdennis nett | dnett@syracuse.com
Through 3 games, Syracuse big man Eddie Lampkin has been his team’s best passer (PS; $; Ditota)
His size suggests that Eddie Lampkin would be most comfortable parked among the bigger, wider bodies on the low block.
And mostly, that’s where the Syracuse center has secured his points.
But it’s his deftness as a passer that has helped the Orange weather some stagnant moments on offense this season.
Through three games, he might be Syracuse’s best, most creative passer.
“It’s a big reason why we’re scoring right now, because of Eddie,” SU coach Adrian Autry said after the Orange survived Youngstown State. “He’s getting to the offensive glass and when they double, getting one or two dump-offs. So, he generates some easy points.”
Lampkin had a team-high seven assists in Syracuse’s double-overtime win over Youngstown State on Saturday. In three games, he has played three fewer minutes and has one more assist than SU’s starting point guard, Jaquan Carlos.

Kansas, Alabama, Auburn fortify 2025 signing classes -- but Kiyan Anthony to Syracuse steals the show (cbssports.com; Bossi)
Kiyan Anthony's commitment to Syracuse on Friday grabbed the headlines (and certainly made many of us feel old), but it was only the first of many top 100 commitments for some of the top programs across the college basketball landscape.
Last Wednesday, Nov. 13, was the first day that the class of 2025 prospects could sign with schools. It began the signing period and accelerated a rather slow cycle for some of the best players In the class.
Right now, only 14 players In 247Sports' top 100 are uncommitted. Its been a gradual procession of commitments over the last few months that has ramped up in recent weeks.
Anthony, the No. 34 overall ranked prospect in the 2025 class, committed to Syracuse on Friday. He joins No. 26-ranked Sadiq White Jr. in the Orange's four-man recruiting class.
"I chose Syracuse because the coaches recruited me from day one," Anthony told 247Sports' Dushawn London about why he picked the Orange. "They really showed me they were recruiting me for who I was and that it had nothing to do with my Dad.
"The Syracuse staff would show up to my house and practices. They really showed interest. They came with presentations more than just basketball. They covered dorms, in-house stuff, NIL, and all that stuff. It was more than basketball with the coaches. They showed the full play of what they can offer."

Vaughn Karvala reacts to Syracuse basketball offer, recaps visit (247sports.com; $; McAllister)
Syracuse basketball improved to 3-0 with a double overtime victory over Youngstown State on Saturday. One of those in attendance to watch the thrilling finish was 2026 Oregon (WI) High small forward Vaughn Karvala. The 6-6 wing was offered by the Orange on the visit. Syracuse joined a group of offerrees that includes Arizona State, Marquette, Ole Miss, Wisconsin and others. He recapped his weekend visit to Syracuse with CuseNation.com.
"They saw me at EYBL and liked how I played," Karvala said. "They started texting and calling. Coach Dan (Englestad) came to a practice and really liked it and how we did everything at my high school. So coach Dan said I should out to Syracuse and see it. So my mom and I decided to head there for my birthday.

How Syracuse Basketball Should Attack 2025 Recruiting After Kiyan Anthony's Decision (youtube; podcast; Locked on Syracuse)
Kiyan Anthony, the son of Syracuse Orange Basketball legend Carmelo Anthony, announced that he's attending Syracuse on Friday. Kiyan Anthony is now Adrian Autry's fourth commitment secured in Syracuse's 2025 high school recruiting class. Anthony joins five-star Sadiq White, four-star Luke Fennell, and three-star Aaron Womack. Syracuse should still pursue an elite prospect like Alex Constanza or or someone who fits a position of need (i.e. Asher Elson). However, Cuse should probably wait to sign Tyler Jackson or a potential wildcard.
Jackson Holzer tells you how Syracuse should attack the 2025 recruitment cycle going forward on this edition of the Locked On Syracuse Podcast.

Syracuse Needs to Run the 2-3 Zone (orangefizz.net; Aitken)
Syracuse basketball has irreversible schematic problems with its defense.
This defense is worse than it’s been in my entire lifetime of watching the Orange play basketball. Transition defense has been bad, closeouts have been bad, rotations have been bad, and players aren’t even putting their hands up to pressure a shooter at times.
Syracuse let up 86 points in regulation to Youngstown State. Syracuse let up over 70 points to both Le Moyne and Colgate.
The Orange have allowed 83 points per game, which ranks 331st out of 355 teams. It’s also the worst mark by any power five team in the country.
The defense is atrocious, and now, there’s only one solution. Syracuse needs to run the 2-3 zone
Let me say it again: Syracuse needs to run the 2-3 zone.
Unfortunately, the backcourt players haven’t proven to be talented enough defensively to play man-to-man in college basketball in 2024. They are getting beat over and over again. Jaquan Carlos and JJ Starling are getting beat time and time again and the rotations in the frontcourt are not good enough.
The only solution is to go back to where Adrian Autry’s mentor, Jim Boeheim, has guided him. Run the 2-3 zone. Then, you finally finally have an opportunity to get some stops. The zone puts the forwards in a more natural position to help guards. Rebounding is usually a concern, but SU’s 47 boards per game are top-10 in the country. Sacrificing some rebounds is worth the better help defense that the zone provides.
If Syracuse does not switch to a 2-3 zone this year, it could have, and likely will have, the worst scoring defense in the ACC. The only way to avoid catastrophe is to return to the programs roots. It might be archaic, but it’s the Orange’s best path forward.

The Le Moyne College Firehouse, at the corner of Salt Springs Road and Demong Drive, will be reopening next year after being closed since 1998. Don Cazentre
Long-closed Le Moyne College Firehouse will reopen in 2025 with local cafe (PS; $; Cazentre)
It was once a social gathering place for Le Moyne College students, and was the longtime home and performance space for the school’s drama department.
But the building on the edge of campus known for decades as the Le Moyne College Firehouse has been mostly vacant and unused since about 1998.
Now, the college is working to bring the old firehouse at 1150 Salt Springs Road back to a useful role in campus life.
The most visible feature will be a full-service location for Syracuse-based Cafe Kubal. The cafe serving locally roasted coffees and baked goods will occupy the first floor and be open to the general public, not just Le Moyne students and staff.
The second floor will be home to Le Moyne’s graduate program in clinical mental health counseling. There’s also a multi-purpose space that can be used for club meetings, conferences, yoga classes and more.
Exterior work, including a new roof, landscaping, a patio and an 11-car parking lot, has been ongoing this year, said college spokesman Joe Della Posta. Interior work will begin after the new year and should be complete by August 2025, just in time for the fall semester, he said.
“It’s a great asset to the Le Moyne community and there’s a lot of attention being paid to the work,” Della Posta said.

All of New York state is now under some form of drought alert: yellow indicates a drought watch, the least severe of four categories; tan indicates drought warning, the next step up.New York State Department of Environmental Conservation
All of Upstate NY state is now under drought alerts as the long dry spell plods on (PS; Coin)
A drought watch has now been issued for nearly all of Upstate New York, with the southeastern corner of the state under a more severe drought warning.
The state remains under a burn ban through the end of the month, and more than half of New York state is at high or very high danger of rapid wildfire spread.
Some relief could some late this week from a strong storm system moving in from the Midwest. That could put a dent in the drought, depending on how much rain falls and where. Some parts of the state are so parched it will take more than the 1 to 2 inches forecast from this storm to end the drought.
"Recent unseasonably warm weather and lack of precipitation have led to dry conditions for many counties in New York, resulting in Hudson Valley and New York City area counties being elevated to drought warning status and a statewide drought watch," Gov. Kathy Hochul said today in a statement.
A drought watch is the lowest of four drought categories; a warning is the next step up. (The two highest are emergency and disaster.) Under a watch, water conservation is encouraged but not mandatory. A warning means that public water supplies and industries are advised to implement drought contingency plans.
Record-warm temperatures and historically low rainfall over the past few months has led to the drought and to the worst wildfires in the state in nearly two decades. While nearly all of New York state has been abnormally dry the past couple of months, the Hudson Valley, New York City and Long Island have been nearly rain-free.
