Welcome to International Bagpipe Day!
International Bagpipe Day is now a well established and increasingly popular event. Every March 10th you are invited to go out and play your pipes – anywhere, anyhow to anyone!
In 2013 we had an excellent event in Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford – amazingly – visitor numbers increased by 25% compared to normal attendance at that time of year. We also received reports back from around the world, ranging from a pipe band performance in an underground cavern in South Africa, to a party on an Athenian hill in Greece. The day was even celebrated in Nigeria, a country not often associated with piping. See our facebook page.

Ranking All 129 College Coaches As Players (espn; Rittenberg)
...
Illinois' quick coaching change allowed all 129 coaches to be included (UAB's Bill Clark, while not competing currently, is ranked).
Let's get started.

129. Mike Leach, Washington State Cougars: There's nothing traditional about Leach, including his background. He played rugby, not football, at BYU after a Wyoming high school career as a reserve.

32. D.J. Durkin, Maryland Terrapins: The Youngstown, Ohio, native went across the state to play at Bowing Green, where he started at defensive back and outside linebacker from 1997 to 2000. Durkin led the team in sacks in 1998 and finished second in 2000. He recorded 28 tackles for loss in his career and twice served as a captain.
31. Dino Babers, Syracuse Orange: Versatility was Babers' calling card at Hawaii, where he started at linebacker, safety and running back in his career. He led the team in rushing as a senior in 1983, then played one year in the CFL.
30. Les Miles, LSU Tigers: The Elyria, Ohio, native was an undersized offensive lineman at Michigan, where he played for Bo Schembechler from 1972 to 1975. Miles earned letters in his final two seasons and started at left guard in 1975.

8. 1959 Syracuse (11-0)
Results vs. AP top 25: No. 4 Texas (W, 23-14), No. 7 Penn State (W, 20-18), No. 17 UCLA (W, 36-8).
All-Americans: G Roger Davis, E Fred Mautino, T Bob Yates, HB Ernie Davis, HB Gerhard Schwedes
Syracuse finished 8-2 the year before but was a preseason afterthought in 1959. Romps over Maryland and Navy got the Orange(men) into the top 10, and an early-November win at Penn State moved them to No. 1. A win over Texas in the hostile Cotton Bowl validated their national title, but because they were an integrated team, they weren't able to arrange a meeting with the other incredible team of 1959, which ranks No. 2 here.

Both Blough and Sindelar will be led by first-year quarterback coach Tim Lester, who was hired on Dec. 28, 2015, and spent three seasons coaching quarterbacks at Syracuse prior to joining coach Hazell’s staff.
“He is awesome,” Sindelar said. “He teaches very complex things in a simple way for us, which is great. All we’re doing is reading coverage, and then we make our own reads. It’s not a set one-two-three with this play. It’s ‘If they’re rolling to this coverage, then this is one and two; if they roll to this coverage, then that is one and two.’ I’ve learned more about reading coverages and reading defenses now than I ever had my entire life.”
The new offensive scheme emphasizes reducing the number of post-snap reads for the quarterback based on the pre-snap read.
“Even when I got up to the line of scrimmage, I could tell that I could eliminate guys just based on being able to read the defense a little bit differently,” Blough said. “I know where I’m going with the ball based on what the defense is giving me, and it’s a little bit different than what we’ve done.”

Fans and two relatives of Gustav Stickley gathered in Eastwood Wednesday, not far from where he made his famous Craftsman furniture, to celebrate his 158th birthday.

Among the 15 people who shared a birthday cake at Dalton's American Decorative Arts store on James Street were Christopher Wiles, a great-grandson of Stickley, and Brendan McGinn, a great-great-grandson of the furniture maker. The cake was decorated with the words "Happy Birthday Gus."
Preservation designer Beth Crawford and Dalton's owner David Rudd organized the event on Stickley's birthday to update fans of the furniture maker on plans to restore his house on Columbus Avenue.
Crawford said work on Phase 1 of the restoration — repairs to the home's exterior and structural improvements — will start this year. The University Neighborhood Preservation Association, which will manage the first phase of the project, is shooting for a start this summer, she said.
The second phase of the restoration will focus on the home's Craftsman interior and will be managed by the Onondaga Historical Association. Project officials expect that phase to be completed in 2019.
