Welcome to National Shrimp Day!

Bubba: Anyway, like I was sayin', shrimp is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. Dey's uh, shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There's pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich. That- that's about it.

BabersBallTM
Syracuse finally gets to shed its skin from an offense with Scott Shafer as head coach and turn to the exciting scheme of Dino Babers.

Babers comes from the Art Briles coaching tree which means true up-tempo pace (and not just pre-season empty promises) and an emphasis on running the ball efficiently.

The entrance of Babers certainly has some folks believing he'll take Syracuse up a notch or two based on his offensive prowess alone. For our Notre Dame perspective it'll be interesting to see just how much impact he has on this side of the ball in year one, week five of the season.

Dungey Takes Command
Syracuse opened 2015 with long-time quarterback Terrel Hunt behind center but he was injured in the opener and missed the entire season. His appeal for a 6th-year was denied by the NCAA.

Harbaugh Led the Revolt

ACC Leaders Lament Conflicting NCAA Decisions on Satellite Camps (orlandosentinel.com; Murschel)

ACC leaders are still trying to figure out how exactly the battle over satellite camps went wrong.

The drama played out publicly, with the SEC and ACC protesting the camps and Michigan coach Jim Harbaughleading a vocal group that supported the camps.

Opponents suggest the practice of people like Harbaugh serving as guest coaches at camps held in recruiting-rich states likeFlorida steer primary recruiting efforts away from high schools and add to coaches' workloads. Proponents suggest the camps can help athletes who would never be recruited by programs outside their home regions earn scholarship opportunities.

Regardless of which side wins the argument, ACC athletics directors weren't pleased the NCAA initially banned the camps and then reversed the decision three weeks later.

Notre Dameathletics director Jack Swarbrick said at the conclusion of the first day of the ACC's spring meetings. “‘Explain to us in the new NCAA governance system what happened.'”

New Jersey Camp Wars: Ohio State Fires Back at Michigan (nj.com; Sargeant)

The coaches at three of New Jersey's perennial powers make no secret of their rivalry on the gridiron, but suddenly they're united for a cause:

Bergen Catholic's Nunzio Campanile, Don Bosco Prep's Greg Toal and St. Peter's Prep's Rich Hansen are supporting Rutgers.

Hours after Rutgers coach Chris Ash announced his program would be joining forces with the coaching staffs at Ohio State and Temple to hold a satellite camp for recruits on the same day (June 8) that Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh is hosting a camp 30 miles away at Paramus Catholic, the three rival coaches each told NJ Advance Media that they plan to encourage their players to attend the Rutgers camp at Fairleigh Dickinson in Madison.

"I think it's a great response,'' Campanile said. "I think he's sending a message that this is our state. Listen, Michigan has a great program but I don't think they should be setting the terms on how it's done in New Jersey. Rutgers is the home-state school, and I think we should all respect that. We should all respect the job that Coach Ash has ahead of him. I think that he's doing a great job. We're here helping him any way we can.''

Ron Thompson Finds "Best Fit" in Indianapolis (TNIAAM; Weinheimer)

Ron Thompson felt he was good enough to have his name called at the NFL Draft. The former Syracuse outside linebacker was one of the strong suits of the Syracuse Orange defense, and was right in the mix during the draft to be picked by a team. In an interview with Fox 59's Mike Chappell in Indianapolis, Thompson said he was disappointed following the draft, but felt he was put in a great situation because he could choose a team that he felt was the best fit for his ability:

"You can go where you want to go," he said. "After six rounds, I was really hoping not to get picked up so I could weigh my options and go to the best fit... Here I am."

Thompson feels that he is best suited for the Colts due to his ability to rush the passer, something Indy has struggled with:

  • Robert Mathis is the franchise's career sack leader with 118. But he's 35 and entering his 14th season. Trent Cole has 88.5 career sacks, but matches a career-low with just 3 last season, his first with the Colts. He's 33 and agreed to a $2.125 million pay cut in March.
  • Also, 2013 first-round draft pick Bjoern Werner was waived in March and Jonathan Newsome, who led the team in sacks as a rookie in '14, was released in February.
  • And let's not forget the Colts didn't address their pass-rush concerns in the draft until using the first of their two seven-rounders - No. 239 overall - on Maine linebacker Trevor Bates.
Thompson feels this would be his best chance to make a roster, an opinion assisted a ton by the information above.

It honestly does sound like Thompson has found his best opportunity to make it in the NFL. His strengths are a Colts' weakness, and could prove to be lucrative for him if he is able to perform. This seems like a great opportunity for him, and hopefully will pan out.

How College Football's P5 Conferences Should Expand (espn; McGee)

SEC gets Charlotte and Memphis? What??

Last week's college football headlines were dominated by expansion chatter emanating from the Big 12, which has been a 10-team league since 2012, when it went from being a 14-team league to an eight-team league to the current dime roster.

If you are surprised to hear the Big 12 kicking around the idea of adding a pair of new schools, thus adding a conference championship game, its first since 2010, and getting back in line with its other four Power 5 brethren, then ... why in the world are you surprised?

If you were surprised at this, then you'll probably also be surprised at the next inevitable step for all five of those conferences: one more round of expansion and realignment across the board. This will be the final great tectonic shift that forever breaks the Power 5 away on their own, becoming some sort of self-governed alliance of 16-team conferences.

To those folks, that's a perfect world. To a lot of other folks, it's not, particularly those schools within the Group of 5 busy trying to build a program that might become the next TCU, Boise State or Utah.

But if that's where this is indeed all headed, what would that perfect Power 5 membership scenario look like? For the sake of dreaming, let's forget about the money-grubbing insanity that leads to moves like Maryland in the Big Ten or West Virginia in the Big 12. Instead, let's imagine what would work best from a purely regional, purely football point of view. A world where conferences worry more about dominating their corner of the map instead of invading others, giving us true regional representatives in their conference championship games and then the College Football Playoff (which, by the way, should stay at four -- my feelings on this are well-documented -- though I know it won't).

Cusumano is 35, and was a standout at Passaic Valley HS under Chet Parlavecchio. He was recruited nationally and went to Syracuse where he played with Dwight Freeney and David Tyree, among others.
I teased him and was like, ‘why Syracuse?’ and he said at the time, Syracuse was the hot team. He liked Paul Pasqualoni a lot, but did add that yes, it was cold and snowy. Cusumano did play a lot, winning 3 varsity letters and was used as a starter at TE his senior season for nine games.
