Welcome to INTERNATIONAL CAPS LOCK DAY!

TODAY IS INTERNATIONAL CAPS LOCK DAY! It's a whole day dedicated to something that drives most people crazy—text that is written in ALL CAPITALIZED LETTERS.

International Caps Lock Day was created in 2000 by Derek Arnold of Iowa. This holiday began as a parody. It was intended to poke fun at those individuals who unnecessarily capitalize letters, words, and phrases. The day became so popular with internet users that it is now celebrated twice a year—on June 28 and on October 22.

2017 Connecticut WR Russell Thompson-Bishop has Syracuse football on top after visit (PS; Bailey)

A quarter of the way through his tour of Syracuse University on Sunday, Russell Thompson-Bishop was pulled out for a one-on-one meeting with Dino Babers.

Thompson-Bishop listened as Babers, SU's first-year head coach, extended him a scholarship offer. Then Babers asked Thompson-Bishop to commit.

"He was asking me to commit," Thompson-Bishop said, "but I couldn't make that decision without talking about it with my family."

So Thompson-Bishop, a 6-foot-2, 198-pound wide receiver, returned home to Bloomfield, Conn. And while he isn't ready to lock in a pledge, he said the Orange leads in his recruitment and he's already setting up a return visit after the dead period ends in July.

Thompson-Bishop is unrated by the major recruiting services, but is being pursued by a handful of Football Bowl Subdivision schools. He listed Boston College, Temple, UConn, Yale and Harvard, all of which have offered, as the programs he's looking at most closely.

Which College Football Team That Syracuse Has Never Played Would You Like To Play? (TNIAAM; Keeley)

Syracuse actually has a lot of interesting opponents that it's never faced before. Maybe we should change that?

I was browsing Reddit's college football subreddit over the weekend and I came across an interesting question that had been posed.

Which two schools that have never played each other would you like to see battle it out?

It's kinda crazy to think that given the amount of time we've been playing college football and the relatively small size of the teams playing, there are still plenty of game combinations that have never happened. For instance, Oklahoma has never played Georgia. Miami has never played Stanford. Alabama has never played Oregon. The one that shocked me the most...Florida State and Texas have never played one another.

Of course, it got me thinking about the Syracuse Orange and the opponents we've never faced. I did some cross-referencing with FBS schools and our historical records and I actually found a sizable number of notable schools that have never faced off against SU.

It's not a huge surprise that many of them are on the West Coast. We've never played the Oregon Ducks, Arizona State Sun Devils or San Diego State Aztecs but we've also never played the Stanford Cardinal, which seems mildly surprising to me. SU vs. SU. Two private schools that have been playing for over a century. You'd have thought we'd have met in a bowl game at some point, if nothing else.

Commitment Capsule: Allen Stritzinger (scout; Trieu)

...
Analysis from Ron English, former Michigan DC:

"His speed was on display, he breaks a run that's called back, but once he got in space, it was not even close, no one was going to catch him. You know, I watch him, he's playing off man to man and he breaks up a slant where he really closes and shows his speed. As a defensive guy, I'd love to coach him on defense because he has great size and speed. He's 6-feet and I think he's going to be a mid 190-200 pound guy in college.

He's a guy who could play both positions. As a running back, what I like about him at RB is, he ran the ball downhill, one cut runner, ran hard and you know when he gets in space, he's going. What I like about him at corner is, I think he moves his hips well enough. I saw him play bump and run early in the game where he can stay in front of guys and he can run with everybody so what a great player and a tremendous talent and a guy I'm interested in following.

Guys with that kind of speed at that kind of size at the corner position, you have a chance to develop a pro."

Former L-L star and NFL WR Darryl Daniel to join Cantafio at SVS camp (lancasteronline.com; Gruver)

Conestoga Valley graduate and former NFL wide receiver Darryl Daniel will be among the instructors at the Susquehanna Valley Sports (SVS) Summer Shootout QB-WR/TE-DB Competition Camp scheduled to be held July 18-19 at Manheim Township High School.

Daniel, an L-L star for the Buckskins, played for Syracuse University and then for the Carolina Panthers, Minnesota Vikings and Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFL. He’ll join Hall of Fame coach Jim Cantafio, former NFL defensive back Aaron Beasley and professional sports performance coach Rich Garcia as instructors at the camp.

Beasley, a native of Pottstown, played college football at West Virginia University and in the NFL for the Jacksonville Jaguars, New York Jets and Atlanta Falcons.

Maryland recruiting notes: Terps make local running back's top four (carrollcountytimes.com; Gallen)

Monday marked the beginning of a "dead period" in college football recruiting, which means that coaches are restricted from in-person contact with recruits.

But the gears are always turning behind the scenes. Over the weekend, Maryland made the cut as a few more recruits narrowed down their lists, while some other targets made commitments elsewhere.

Here's a short roundup of some recent Terps recruiting news regarding prospects in the Class of 2017:

    • Three-star Potomac running back Tayon Fleet-Davis placed Maryland in his top four alongside Syracuse and Big Ten Conference foes Iowa and Indiana. Fleet-Davis is rated as the No. 16 prospect in Maryland and the No. 39 running back nationally in the 247sports.com composite rankings.

Four-star WR Micah Jones cuts list, includes Illini (thechampaignrom.com; Vainisi)

The class-of-2018 standout is one of Illinois' top targets.

Fighting Illini football has made the cut for one of their top class-of-2018 recruiting targets. Four-star wide receiver Micah Jones (Gurnee, IL) has informed Scout that his top five schools are Illinois, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Iowa, and Northwestern. The 6-foot-4 wideout is rated as the No. 128 overall player in the 247Sports rankings.

Gurnee (Ill.) Warren 2018 WR Micah Jones has a top five; more visits and camps to come:

In addition to those five programs, Jones' Power 5 offer list includes Vanderbilt, Iowa State, and Syracuse. Arizona State, Miami (FL), Wisconsin, Texas A&M, Purdue, and Minnesota have also expressed interest.

Jones visited Champaign earlier this Spring for Illinois' open practice, and he told Scout that he'll be back on campus sometime in July. So while it's still very early in this recruitment, it looks like Lovie Smith and the Illini have put themselves in a great position to perhaps land one of the state's top prospects.

Get To Know Your Orange Man - No. 73, OT Jon Burton (TNIAAM; Cassillo)

Name: Jon Burton
Position: Offensive tackle
Year: (Redshirt) Junior
Height: 6'8"
Weight: 319
Hometown: Spotsylvania, Va.
High School: Courtland
2015 Stats: Burton saw the field in two different games, both on special teams.
2016 Projections: Burton's currently slated as the Syracuse Orange's third left tackle, so that doesn't project to be a ton of playing time on the line. But perhaps he's plugged in further at special teams.
How'd He Get Here: Former Orange offensive line coach Greg Adkins brought him into the fold, and Syracuse managed to hold onto him despite aggressive pursuit from other schools after Adkins's departure. Take that, other schools.
What'd Scout/Rivals Say: ESPN's the only one to give him three stars, so that's the only one that counts in our book.
Links of Wonder: Syracuse.com did a pretty detailed breakdown on Burton when he first arrived on campus.
Twitterfeed: Jon Burton has no use for Twitter.

Recruiting dead period begins (sun-sentinel.com; Furones)

Another football recruiting "dead period" began Monday. Here's what that means:

Another "dead period" in college football recruiting is upon us, running from today through July 10.

The term is heard often by recruiting junkies, but what does it mean?

According to the NCAA website, during a dead period, college coaches may not engage in face-to-face contact with a recruit or his parents, watch a recruit compete or visit high schools. All that is allowed is for coaches to write or communicate over the phone with recruits and parents.

Many area recruits got their commitments out of the way before the dead period.

This past week, six St. Thomas Aquinas prospects committed -- WR Mike Harley (West Virginia), WR Jonathan Moore (FIU), WR Joshua Palmer (Syracuse), OL Grant Miller (Vanderbilt), DL LaShawn Paulino (Michigan State) and DL Kivon Bennett (Tennessee).

In other commitments, Chaminade QB Henry Colombi pledged to Utah State, Deerfield Beach DT Lamonte McDougle committed to Washington State and Miramar OL Sebastien Dolcine pledged to UCF.

Central New York Holds the Cards for Next Congress - Syracuse New Times (syracusenewtimes.com; Parsnow)

Republicans and Democrats are both looking to put one of their own in the Oval Office this November, but that’s only half the battle. The other half is to stock the seats on Capitol Hill to make their choice for president’s job easier. How well they fill those seats determines national policy for years to come. And both parties have their sights set on New York.

The Empire State saw its own share of the national Republican surge in the 2014 midterm elections, in which the GOP captured the Senate for the first time since 2006 and gained its largest majority in the House of Representatives since the 1920s. Three seats in New York’s 27 congressional districts that had previously been held by Democrats were overtaken. Lee Zeldin, of Long Island, unseated his six-term Democratic opponent. Elise Stefanik, from the North Country, became the youngest woman ever elected to Congress, beating her opponent by a whopping 22 points.

This November’s race in Zeldin’s district will be close, but he has a reasonable chance of victory. Stefanik’s opponent, Mike Derrick, is a retired Army colonel, and is a smart choice for the Democrats as the district is where Fort Drum is located. But the district is very rural and quite large — spanning from Watertown to the Vermont border — so it’s pretty hard for a new face to show his or herself in the time given.

But a lot of eyes are going to be on central New York over the next few months. It is the 24th Congressional District where the stakes are high and time is short. Following Tuesday’s Democratic primaries, the heart of the state is going to become the heart of the 2016 races for the House.
