Welcome to Four Prunes Day!

Today is Four Prunes Day. It may sound like a funny name for a food celebration. But four prunes are the minimum of what people who want more “digestive regularity” should take per day (up to a maximum of 9 prunes a day). We love prunes and prune juice. But many Americans steer clear of them, perhaps because of their association with regularity, which goes back to before great-grandmother’s day. A campaign several years back tried to change the name of prunes to “dried plums” (which is what prunes are) to make them more appealing. But as anyone who has ever made a pork or chicken roast with stuffed prunes knows, the dried fruits are delicious on their own. One of our favorite hors d’oeuvre is prunes stuffed with chicken liver mousse (you can marinate the prunes in Cognac overnight before stuffing).

Dungey continues attack on SU record book (TNIAAM; Cassillo)

After last week’s difficult loss to Wake Forest, we didn’t bother looking at the minimal gains made by the Syracuse Orange in the offensive stats department. But this week, after a thrilling 31-17 upset over the 17th-ranked Virginia Tech Hokies? You bet we’re talking about all of the Orange statistical accolades.

Passing
Eric Dungey’s 53 attempts set the new mark for second-most by a Syracuse quarterback in one game. Ryan Nassib’s 66-attempt effort against Northwestern in 2012 remains up top. But the next five spots on the list are all Dungey’s from this year. While he wasn’t overly accurate (52.8 percent on the day), his 28 completions are also top-10 material in the SU record books. Dungey owns four of the top 10 spots on that list.

Adding another 311 passing yards to his total pushes Dungey up to 2,197 on the year, which is the eight-best single-season total in school history. He’s less than 100 yards from surpassing Marvin Graves’s total from 1992 and another 300-yard game would vault him past Donavan McNabb’s 1997 effort for fourth. Dungey’s 192 completions on the year put him one behind Greg Paulus for fourth-most in a single season. His 308 attempts ar
e also just short of fourth-most (a spot currently inhabited by R.J. Anderson, who had 310 in 2003).

Syracuse returns to bowl projections (TNIAAM; Cassillo)

After upsetting the no. 17 Virginia Tech Hokies on Saturday, the Syracuse Orange are back in some bowl projections around the internet. Not all of them, of course (and fairly so). But some... which are the ones we care about most here.

First up is SB Nation. Jason Kirk hasn’t wavered on SU making the postseason, even at 5-7 via APR scores. This week we’re pegged to play the Houston Cougars in the Birmingham Bowl — an absolutely terrifying proposition given the speed at which UH operates and the talent on that roster. Houston’s 6-1 and ranked 11th in this week’s AP Poll. While they’re likely the best team in the AAC, they need Navy (who beat them) to lose twice if they want any shot at playing for a conference title. That’s how a team that good ends up down in the Birmingham Bowl.

Obviously any trip to the postseason’s a good one. And perhaps Houston would not be thrilled about a lower-tier game (and maybe playing without their coach Tom Herman on the sidelines). But still not an ideal matchup at all.

As others left, they came to one of Syracuse's poorest neighborhoods to build a future (PS; Eisenstadt)

The house at 721 Otisco St. was a shell. It had been set on fire four times. And still, someone had scrawled "Burn Me" in black on a board covering one of the broken windows. The message: Try harder. Every window was broken. The Victorian details were covered by decades of institutional beige paint. The house was lifeless except when crack dealers ducked inside to do business.

Now, the home looks like the Victorian gingerbread house it was more than a century ago. Behind the purple door lives a mom, a dad, two blond kids and yappy dog. The family and a handful of others came to Otisco Street like settlers. They work in art, architecture, education, construction and social work. They are do-gooders lured by a good deals: some homes were $1. Others cost more, but all were far cheaper than they would have been anywhere else in Syracuse. And the homes offered the opportunity to help change a neighborhood from the inside out.

From ESPN analytics:

"Syracuse went for it on fourth down four times between the Virginia Tech 30 and 50 and made all four tries. While those conversions certainly didn't win the game, Dino Babers' aggressiveness made a difference. The four conversions combined added about 50 percentage points in win probability."

Dino Babers (Syracuse)
The Orange upset Virginia Tech on Saturday. Their 85.5 offensive snaps per game are No. 2 nationally and a huge increase from the 62.5 per game last year. That’s an incredible tempo change.
