Syracuse's Dino Babers: football program is trending up (Nov 21, 2016) (foxsports.com; AP)

Dino Babers has watched his winning percentage as a head coach drop nearly 6 percent during his first year at Syracuse. He's still adamant the program is headed in the right direction, even after a lopsided loss on Senior Day.

''I think they've written the introduction, this senior class,'' Babers said Monday, two days after a 45-14 home loss to Florida State, which is up two notches this week to No. 15 in the AP Top 25 . ''I think this program is trending up.''

Syracuse (4-7, 2-5 ACC) was trending big-time five weeks ago after Babers gave a stirring postgame speech after the Orange upset then-No. 17 Virginia Tech in the Carrier Dome. That win was followed by another, at Boston College, before reality returned.

Syracuse has now lost three straight , outscored by 100 points, also beaten by No. 4 Clemson (54-0) and N.C. State (35-20) during the late-season swoon.

Before Saturday's game, the school handed out bobbleheads honoring former Orange All-America Floyd Little, one in a long line of stellar tailbacks the university is renowned for - from Jim Brown to Heisman Trophy winner Ernie Davis to Little to Larry Csonka, and so on. Then, with its offensive line banged-up and starting quarterback Eric Dungey out for the second straight game, Syracuse was outgained 654-233 and its run game was stopped again in its tracks, managing 37 yards on 35 carries.

Syracuse enters the final week of its regular season ranked 122nd in rushing (ahead of only six other teams), averaging 109.7 yards per game and 2.99 yards per carry, a telltale statistic for the team's scoring woes.

Even with Dungey putting up big yardage numbers earlier in the season, the Orange's up-tempo attack has had a difficult time scoring - Syracuse ranks 112th, averaging 22.5 points. Before he was hurt in early November against Clemson, the Orange averaged just over eight points in the second half of seven games against FBS teams, failing to score in six of 14 quarters after halftime.

Syracuse can still make a bowl, and here’s how (TNIAAM; Cassillo)

The Syracuse Orange can still make a bowl game. I know, at 4-7 (2-5) and struggling since Eric Dungey was injured, it’s hard to believe. But the opportunity is still out there for Dino Babers’s team in his first season at the helm.

It’s not assured, mind you. But if the following steps take place, they could find themselves in some third-rate bowl, which is fine. We could use the extra practices and maybe some injured players actually return in the few weeks we’ll have off between now and then.

Step 1: Beat Pittsburgh

This is the toughest part. Vegas sees the Pittsburgh Panthers are 23.5-point favorites heading into this one, and as mentioned, SU’s far from healthy. But still, a win at Heinz Field gets us to five on the year, and then we play APR score roulette...

Step 2: Hope for losses

Yesterday, Syracuse.com’s Chris Carlson provided a breakdown of what needs to happen, calling out the 14 five-win teams that would be ahead of Syracuse in the pecking order if they win another game (either this Saturday or next Saturday, for some). According to Carlson, there are nine spots available for these teams. So you’re rooting for the following schools to lose:

Duke, Notre Dame, SMU, NC State, Southern Miss, South Alabama, TCU, Texas, UTSA, Miami (OH), Akron, Hawaii, Arizona State and Ole Miss.

Based on the opponent(s) each faces, some are more likely to win than others. We sort the likely winners and likely losers into two separate buckets below:

Likely to win

South Alabama (vs. Idaho and New Mexico State)
TCU (vs. Texas and Kansas State)
Miami (OH) (vs. Ball State)
Hawaii (vs. UMass)
Arizona State (vs. Arizona)
Ole Miss (vs. Mississippi State)

Matt Canada’s first season as Pitt’s offensive coordinator has been a productive and imaginative blur of jet sweeps, shovel passes and offensive linemen on the receiving end of touchdowns.

That success, however, can attract outside attention, particularly in a profession as transient as coaching. Panthers coach Pat Narduzzi, though, believes his program can and will take the necessary steps to retain Canada.

“I know the business we’re in,” Narduzzi said Monday at his weekly press conference. “People look and see where you are and what you’re doing. If they like you, they can come get you. We have a great staff. People are going to go get them. But we’re going to do what we can do to make sure Matt stays here for a while.”

After being let go at North Carolina State, Pitt hired Canada in January after previous coordinator Jim Chaney left for the same position at Georgia.

His first season with the Panthers has exceeded virtually all expectations, as an offense that had to replace its top playmaker from last year, wide receiver Tyler Boyd, is 15th in the Football Bowl Subdivision in scoring offense (39.3 points per game), up more than 10 points from what it averaged last season. Pitt’s 432 points this season are the most in program history.

When Narduzzi made the hire, he did so with the expectation Canada would be with the program for an extended period time, as is the case with most any coaching addition.

“As a young head coach, you certainly hope so,” Narduzzi said. “I had the same expectation when we hired Chaney. Sometimes you get snowed or whatever. But I’ve known Matt for a long time. We’ve got a great relationship. I think he’s having fun.”

Syracuse Football: Their Season Is Officially Cooked (insidetheloudhouse.com; Edsen Jr)

The Syracuse football team had slim hopes of making a bowl game prior to Saturday’s game against Florida State. After their loss, their season is officially cooked.

The Syracuse football team built a lot of excitement up during the offseason with the splashy signing of new head coach Dino Babers. Despite Orange being the new fast, it hasn’t been enough this season.

It sure wasn’t enough Saturday against perennial power-house, Florida State, who came in on a mission. Specifically a guy we talked up throughout our pregame coverage was Dalvin Cook and he came to play Saturday.

On Saturday he became the Seminoles’ all-time leading rusher and he pounded the Orange defense all day long. While on offense for the Orange, they just haven’t been able to run the football all season long.

The Orange have run for less than 70 yards combined over the last two weeks and if the Orange are ever going to turn things around, they’ll find a running game. Also beyond the field, we have to give a huge congratulations to all the Seniors who put it on the line for Syracuse throughout their careers.

Half streaker A topless man runs down the sideline during a game against Florida State. I think this is the first time in all my years I have seen someone come out of the stands and run down the field. He ran from one end to the other jumping back into the stands where the Florida State fans were. Very weird. Nikon D4S camera 200400 f4 mm lens (400mm ISO 5000 Aperture 4.5 Shutter 1/800)

Watch: Downtown Syracuse blanketed with lake effect snow (video) (PS; video; Collins)

While the massive, lingering snow storm closed schools on Monday, many people still had a commute to make.

In downtown Syracuse, plows struggled to keep up with the constant snow, cars slowed down and pedestrians navigated around snow banks.

Outside of the city, traffic came to a standstill in some places. I-81 was closed in both directions in the early evening due to accidents.

The National Weather Service has extended the lake effect warning – which was initially set to expire Monday night -- until Tuesday morning, so expect tomorrow's commute to be snowy and slow as well.

News, Notes & Quotes - Nov. 22

- Brian Kelly is fed up with the lack of targeting calls on hits to Deshone Kizer, who was knocked out late of Saturday’s loss to Virginia Tech.

"It's just not right. We're either going to protect the quarterback or we're not going to protect the quarterback," Kelly said. "... Just have to figure out what they want to do with this. The supervisor of officials has got to make a clear edict as to how they want this officiated. He clearly has not made it clear enough how this is going to go."

Kelly invoked Cam Newton and added, "I'm going to ask them to go see Roger Goodell. That may be the way to do it. Maybe he could do something about it."

Maybe he should talk to his defense too. Remember this? I believe it happened really early in the ND-Syracuse game. Almost like he was coached to do it...
