Welcome to National Spaghetti Day!

Today is National Spaghetti Day! Did you know that in the year 2000, 1.3 million pounds of spaghetti were sold in American grocery stores? If all of those packages were lined up, they would circle the Earth nine times!

The first historical reference to boiled noodles (found in the Jerusalem Talmud) suggests that the Arabs invented the dish thousands of years ago. What’s remarkable about this record is that it actually refers to dried noodles purchased from a vendor, which means that pasta has been sold in stores since at least the 5th century!

Today we associate pasta with the Italians, who have revolutionized the dish and invented a wide variety of pasta shapes. These include farfalle, conchiglie, rotini, penne, tortellini, and, of course, spaghetti. Spaghetti is the most common round-rod type of pasta and in Italian, “spaghetti” means “little lines.” Spaghetti is traditionally served with tomato sauce and Parmesan cheese, but you can also add meat, garlic, oil, and pepper for extra flavor.

Kaaya’s latest 2017 SU foe to declare for NFL Draft (TNIAAM; Cassillo)

Because that’s how this website works, much has already been made about the potential difficulty of the 2017 Syracuse Orange football schedule here. Even with an improved team come the fall, SU still has quite a hill to climb given road trips to Florida State, LSU, Louisville and Miami, plus home dates with Clemson and Pitt -- and that’s before glancing at the rest of the challenging slate.

While that all remains true, things are at least getting slightly easier (for now) given all of the underclassmen declaring for the NFL Draft since the season ended.

The latest Orange foe to pass on another year of college (and a potential matchup with Syracuse) was Miami Hurricanes quarterback Brad Kaaya yesterday.

Given the likelihood that he’ll be selected in the first day or so this spring, it’s no surprise to see Kaaya elect to head to the pros. In 13 games this year, the junior threw for 3,532 yards, 27 touchdowns and just seven interceptions. He had 9,968 yards and 69 touchdowns in his career at Miami.

Kaaya’s not the only notable underclassman to declare for the draft, either. Thankfully — and despite the prospect of putting up a career’s worth of yards against the Orange’s defense — several others have already declared, too. Among them:

James Conner, RB, Pittsburgh
Dalvin Cook, RB, Florida State
Leonard Fournette, RB, LSU
Wayne Gallman, RB, Clemson
Davon GodChaux, DT, LSU
David Njoku, TE, Miami
Artavis Scott, WR, Clemson
DeShaun Watson, QB, Clemson
Mike Williams, WR, Clemson
Joseph Yearby, RB, Miami

CNY in the NFL: A look at how Syracuse football and Central New York performed in Week 17 (PS; photo gallery)

Chandler Jones (Arizona Cardinals) The former firstround draft pick out of Syracuse ended his season with 1.5 sacks and two quarterback hits in a 446 victory against the Los Angeles Rams. Jones is a free agent after the season, but the Cardinals are going to keep him in Arizona. The team has said it plans to use the franchise tag on Jones if the two sides aren't able to secure a longterm deal.

Syracuse Football: Doug Marrone is a hot candidate, does he deserve it? | FOX Sports (foxports.com; Edsen Sr)

Former Syracuse football head coach, Doug Marrone, is again a hot NFL coaching candidate. But the question is, does he deserve to be?
As I have previously stated I have been a Syracuse football season ticket holder since 2008. So I understand the draw of Doug Marrone. He was the most desired candidate available by Tim Green and Floyd Little. He was also the first Syracuse alumni to be the head coach since 1948. (Reaves H. Baysinger). This seemed like a match made in heaven, a home town boy coming back to his alma mater to restore it to the Glory Days.

Things did not start or finish well however. The first campaign earned the Orange only four wins (only one win in the power house that was the Big East football). The remaining years he met with some success, going 8-5 twice, however play was not consistent. His third year with the team yielded only a 5-7 record. He also did not leave a lot in the tank for his hand picked replacement who only managed a 14-23 record the three seasons following Doug Marrone’s departure.

Along the way he failed to perform one of his primary responsibilities as a college coach, teach and develop his young players. An example of that is Mike Williams who walked away from the team as the leading receiver for the Orange due to a disagreement with the head coach. There also was not a lot of love lost between the head ball coach and his assistant coaches. Bob Casullo who worked with Doug both in the NFL and at Syracuse referred to him as self-centered and greedy.

62 New York diners worth a visit, 1 for every county (newyorkupstate.com; photo gallery)

62 diners to check out in New York With more than 500 diners scattered all over New York State, no diner list can ever be complete. With old ones closing and newer ones having grand openings, the diner scene is everchanging.

Here is a list of 62 diners, one from each county. Our only criterion was that we wanted them to have the word "diner" in their name (and 59 out of 62 do!). Are they the best diners? Probably not. Are they the oldest? Some are. Are they interesting? Yes. But one thing in common is that they all reflect the changing image of the American Diner, from small railroad car diners of yesteryear to the big chrome, steel and glass "diner palaces" of today. So, admitting that we have missed more than 400 of them, which diner from which county would you add to our list?
