Welcome to Macintosh Computer Day!

The Macintosh (/ˈmækᵻntɒʃ/ mak-in-tosh; (branded as Mac since 1998) is a series of personal computers (PCs) designed, developed, and marketed by Apple Inc. Steve Jobs introduced the original Macintosh computer on January 10, 1984. This was the company's first mass-market personal computer featuring an integral graphical user interface and mouse.[1] This first model was later renamed to "Macintosh 128k" for uniqueness amongst a populous family of subsequently updated models which are also based on Apple's same proprietary architecture. Since 1998, Apple has largely phased out the Macintosh name in favor of "Mac", and the product family has been nicknamed "Mac" or "the Mac" since the development of the first model.

http://nypost.com/2017/01/24/miami-blocks-a-former-nyc-high-school-star-from-transferring/ (nypost.com; Brazilier)

After four years at the University of Miami, Gus Edwards has fulfilled his duty as a student-athlete. He is on pace to graduate in May with an undergraduate degree in liberal arts and has accepted his role as a backup running back. Now, with one year of eligibility left, the former Tottenville High School star wants to be closer to home to be able to receive family support for his recently born son and get an opportunity as a feature back.

There’s just one problem: The Staten Island native is being blocked by Miami from transferring to either of the two programs that interest him the most — Pittsburgh and Syracuse — a source close to him told The Post, because those two programs are on the Hurricanes’ schedule next season. Considering Miami coach Mark Richt’s history, this comes as a surprise.

Richt said in August he didn’t block transfers because “life is too short.” While head coach at Georgia in 2012, Richt made a similar statement and he never blocked a transfer to a specific school while with the Bulldogs from 2001-15. He even allowed Georgia transfers to go to SEC rivals such as Alabama and Auburn.

“I want our guys to stay, and sometimes when they do choose to leave, I still like the kid and I still want the kid to have success,” he said in 2012. “If he thinks he will have success at a school you compete against, then so be it.”

GREENSBORO, NC – The 2017 Atlantic Coast Conference football schedule released Tuesday again includes one of the most difficult nonconference slates among the Power Five conferences.
  • With Clemson and Florida State winning two of the last four national championships, ACC programs will face teams in 2017 that have won 10 of the last 11 national titles.
  • ACC teams will play more games (22) against Power Five nonconference teams than any of its peer conferences. The ACC will also have a higher percentage (.393) of its nonconference games against Power Five opponents than any other league.
  • ACC teams will play more games against nonconference teams (7) that were ranked in last year’s final Associated Press Top 25 than any other Power Five conference. The ACC also has the second-highest percentage of games against teams ranked in the final AP poll of any of its peers.

Georgia Tech's Johnson rips ACC scheduling (espn; Adelson)

Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson lashed out at the ACC soon after the 2017 schedule was released because three teams have a bye before facing the unorthodox Jackets triple-option offense, more than any other team in the league.

This is a familiar complaint from a coach who has called the ACC's scheduling intentions into question several times over the last five years. He believes the extra time his opponents get to prepare serves to benefit them and hurt Georgia Tech.

"The conference tries to screw us every way they can," Johnson told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Tuesday.
"It happens every year. It has to be intentional. There's no other explanation for it," Paul Johnson says of ACC scheduling. Mike Zarrilli/Getty Images
It also happened last season. Three teams had a bye before playing Georgia Tech, once again more than any other ACC team. In 2017, Clemson and Wake Forest have open dates before playing Georgia Tech. Miami is the third team, but Georgia Tech also gets a bye before playing the Hurricanes.

ACC teams are not allowed to request bye weeks before playing specific teams, though Johnson is convinced otherwise.

"It has to be it," Johnson said. "It happens every year. It has to be intentional. There's no other explanation for it."

The ACC referred to a statement made last year from senior associate commissioner for football Michael Strickland, who oversees league scheduling.

"When building our conference schedule, the charge from our schools is to create a schedule that complies with our parameters to ensure competitive equity, fulfills our television obligations and maximizes exposure for ACC Football," the statement read. "Within the logistics of this process, it must also take into account all of the institutionally scheduled non-conference games."

For perspective, the ACC must work up 14 different schedules and that requires fitting in eight conference games in between nonconference games that are already set by individual schools. In the past, other ACC teams have faced an inordinate number of teams off bye weeks. In 2014, Florida State played four teams coming off open dates and still made the College Football Playoff. Florida State also played three teams off byes in 2013, the year it won the national championship. That same year, Clemson and Duke also played three teams off an open date.

How the ACC used coaches, quarterbacks to overtake the SEC in 2016 (cbssports.com; Solomon)

The ACC struck out the last time it seriously made noise to compete in football with the SEC. Knowing football money dictates how economics work in college sports, ACC commissioner John Swofford expanded in 2004-05 to add Miami, Virginia Tech Hokies and Boston College Eagles .

This was a period when the ACC split 36 games against SEC, which was saddled with several NCAA probations, from 1999 to 2003. Arguments got made by coaches and in the media that the ACC had surpassed the SEC and better positioned than its neighbor for the future due to expansion. Florida State Seminoles 's Bobby Bowden even bragged in 2004 that, by adding Miami, "The state of Florida is going to learn about the ACC" and "the stepbrother is down in Gainesville."

Yeah, that didn't happen. The SEC won seven straight national titles with Alabama Crimson Tide , Florida, LSU Tigers and Auburn Tigers . The ACC, which has won only seven football national titles in its history, went 14 years without winning one during its longest drought since 1953-81.

Fast forward to today. The ACC -- not the Big Ten, as I wrote earlier this year -- turned out to be the best conference in 2016 thanks largely to coaches and quarterbacks. The question now: Is the ACC better positioned to sustain success than the last time it surpassed the SEC in football?

"Now we just need to continue that upward trajectory of staying there, and that's hard to do," Swofford said. "But to stay there, you have to get there first."

Examining college football's controversial targeting rule and how it impacts Notre Dame (ndinsider.com; Vorel)

Torii Hunter Jr. was targeted by DeShone, then targeted by Deshon.

The rest, he can’t remember.

The play began innocently enough, with a third-and-12 on Texas’ 19-yard line. Notre Dame trailed 31-28 with 36 seconds remaining in the third quarter of its season opener on Sept. 4, and junior quarterback DeShone Kizer took a shotgun snap, dropped back two steps, set his feet and threw.

The football met a leaping Hunter in the middle of the Longhorn end zone, arcing neatly into a window over the linebacker and between the corner and safety. The 6-foot, 195-pound senior corralled it in front of his facemask and pulled it into his stomach.

But unfortunately, he landed — and Deshon Elliott hit the lights.

Joanie Mahoney's car stolen, quickly recovered (PS; Baker)

Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney's car was stolen last week and recovered several days later by Syracuse police.

The vehicle -- a black Audi A8 -- was stolen in the Town of DeWitt and reported to the DeWitt Police Department.

Mahoney's spokesman, Justin Sayles, said today that the car was returned quickly. He thanked the agencies involved with its recovery.

"The County Executive is very happy that her car was returned quickly," said Sayles in a statement. "She is grateful to the Syracuse Police Department and the DeWitt police for working together and providing exceptional service. At this time there are no other details regarding the incident and we would refer any additional questions to the SPD or DeWitt police."

No further information was immediately available, including from where the vehicle was stolen or where it was found.

A spokesman for the Syracuse Police Department said there was no city report on the stolen vehicle. The DeWitt Police Department could not be reached Tuesday afternoon.

Mahoney and her family live in the Town of DeWitt.

"The conference tries to screw us every way they can," Johnson told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Tuesday.
"It happens every year. It has to be intentional. There's no other explanation for it," Paul Johnson says of ACC scheduling.
Then don't teach a style of play that, while technically legal, can easily injure players and ruin careers. Karma, Paul. Karma.
