Welcome to Thomas Crapper Day!

Yes its true. Today we celebrate the man behind the porcelain throne – Thomas Crapper.

Though credited by many as the inventor of the flush toilet, Crapper was not, but he did popularize the WC (water closet).

He was a shrewd businessman, salesman and self-publicist. In a time when bathroom fixtures were barely spoken of, he heavily promoted sanitary plumbing and pioneered the concept of the bathroom fittings showroom*

Crapper did hold numerous patents that helped modernize indoor plumbing. His company, Thomas Crapper & Co. Ltd., is still creating reproductions of his original designs.

BTW – About the word Crap …

…is old in the English language, one of a group of nouns applied to discarded cast offs, like “residue from renderings” (1490s) or … probably extended from Middle English crappe “chaff, or grain that has been trodden underfoot in a barn” (c. 1440), deriving ultimately from Late Latin crappa, “chaff.”

Yet another purported explanation is that Crapper’s flush toilet advertising was so widespread that “crapper” became a synonym for “toilet” and people simply assumed that he was the inventor.*

Pierre committed to Syracuse in early November after withdrawing his pledge to Western Kentucky.

How have recent National Signing Days gone for SU? (TNIAAM; Cassillo)

Yesterday we talked about what to expect for next Wednesday’s National Signing Day, including Syracuse Orange signees, our coverage here and the likely Dino Babers nickname parade.

There aren’t any glaring concerns at the moment over any of the 18 signees, though Ifeatu Melifonwu’s recent discussions with Michigan (no offer yet) certainly raise some eyebrows.

You also don’t always know when a kid is going to flip from your school or to your school. So unless you’re locked in a battle for a top-300 prospect (we rarely are), your three-star guys are pretty content sticking with you by now. And your top guys either look solid (like current commit Tommy DeVito) or they don’t.

Looking back on Syracuse’s previous national Signing Days, we wanted to see what happened, where we ranked and how those classes have turned out thus far:

2016
Babers started his new regime from scratch, basically replacing all but a few previously-committed players leftover from Scott Shafer’s time as coach. Despite the late reset, Syracuse still managed a top-60ish class on Signing Day, coming in around 10th in the ACC.

National Signing Day: Where does Syracuse football Class of 2017 stand? (PS; Bailey)

In six days, Syracuse head coach Dino Babers, his assistant coaches and the SU recruiting staff will huddle together in a room with their eyes locked on a fax machine.

All of the work that group has put in since arriving more than a year ago will be put to the test. Which Class of 2017 recruits will send in national letters of intent? Will any of SU's top commits be poached by more prominent programs in the 24th hour? Will Syracuse reach down and pluck a pledge from a lesser school?

National Signing Day always promises intrigue and excitement. Here's what you need to know about where the Orange stands less than a week out:

Mike Weaver to Play in New York Next Season (mytwintiers.com)

Elmira's own Mike Weaver is coming back close to home next year-for one game only.

Weaver and the Wake Forest football program has an ACC Conference game at Syracuse on Saturday, November 11th at the Carrier Dome. The redshirt junior is coming off his best year in college football.

Weaver finished tied for 12th in the nation in field goals made (21) and helped Wake Forest to its first bowl win since 2008. The Demon Deacons topped ranked Temple in the Military Bowl in December, 34-26. Weaver connected on two field goals and was 4-for-4 on extra points in the bowl game.

18 Sports will keep you covered on the future of Weaver as he embarks on his final year of play at Wake Forest in 2017.

Coal Region's character, toughness wins on the field (dailyitem.com; Ritzman)

People from the Coal Region are different.

They speak differently. Their ancestors had different work-related challenges. And, according to a panel discussion Thursday afternoon at Bucknell, the Coal Region has done inordinately well at athletics.

"I think we can all agree that the Coal Region and athletics go hand-in-hand," moderator Drew Kelly said. "But why is that? ... Toughness? Is that the common thread?"

According to former Bucknell basketball player and coach Pat Flannery, the link is due to character. That character includes the toughness and perseverance needed to work in a coal mine.
...
...
It wasn't just in one town that people in the Coal Region came together for athletics.

"There's one story I wanted to tell and maybe it could only happen in the Coal Region," Flannery said.

Flannery's nephew played football at Syracuse and Flannery said the only reason Syracuse knew about his nephew was because Berwick coach George Curry told the Syracuse coaches to take a look at him.
...
...
"I couldn't love where I grew up more," Flannery said. "It was just a different kind of culture."

The giant supermarket company Albertsons has reportedly dropped its efforts to buy Schenectady-based Price Chopper.

But Food Trade News says several financial sources have told it that Albertsons is no longer interested in Price Chopper, preferring instead to focus on its plan, announced in July 2015, to take the company public.

Price Chopper is owned by Golub Corp. Golub operates 136 Price Chopper and Market 32 stores New York, Vermont, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and New Hampshire. It operates four Price Chopper stores in Onondaga County.

Based in Boise, Idaho, Albertsons is one of the largest food and drug retailers in the United States, operating more than 2,200 stores in 33 states and the District of Columbia. The stores operates under 18 names, including Albertsons, Safeway, Vons, Jewel-Osco, Shaw's, Acme, Tom Thumb, Randalls, United Supermarkets, Pavilions, Star Market and Carrs.

Nice Syracuse shoutout. They brought up Chandler Jones in he role of a villain but didn't mention that he and Dwight have a Syracuse connection. Oh well. Freeney sounds as though position coaching is in his future. I'd love to see him up on the hill giving tutoring to our DL
