Syracuse Football: 2017 Signee Nykeim Johnson is a Hidden Gem | FOX Sports (loud house Carey)

The Syracuse football program got some great recruits, but several of them flew under the radar. Here’s one signee you should be paying attention too.
One of Syracuse football’s least talked about recruits in the class of 2017 has been Nykeim Johnson. The speedy wide receiver out of Friendship Academy in Washington D.C has flown under the radar a bit.

What Johnson lacks in size, measuring at 5-foot 9-inch 165-pound, he makes up for in speed. At their request, this network is being blocked from this site. lists Johnson’s 40-yard dash time at 4.42, he clearly has tremendous speed and agility.

Johnson will likely line up in the slot for Syracuse. He will be competing for Brisly Estime’s former position along with guys like Sean Riley and Sean Avant.

Both are extremely inexperienced and Johnson has a real shot to come in here and make an impact from day one. Lets look at some of his highlights:

Syracuse finishes 11th in ACC recruiting rankings (TNIAAM; Cassillo)

The Syracuse Orange had an unsurprising National Signing Day outside of the late get of Mykelti Williams. So in terms of players and rankings, we knew where we stood and that we weren’t shifting much with the events of February 1.

Still, it’s good to see Syracuse’s 2017 class finish 11th overall in the ACC, and even higher up if you look at the per-recruit averages (instead of the total score) on the 247 Sports composite rankings.

TNIAAP: National Signing Day/NC State Recap (TNIAAM; podcast; Cassillo & Gilberg)

National Signing Day was the main focus of Syracuse Orange fan’s world on Wednesday -- until a ridiculous basketball game broke out and grabbed all of our attention away. So is life if you’re a fan of this athletic program.

In this week’s episode, John Cassillo is joined by Ari Gilberg to recap all of National Signing Day, the NC State win, and of course, beer. Some of the larger talking points:

  • Running down what happened in Syracuse recruiting
  • Orange football scheduling talk, because of course
  • Talking ourselves into an unlikely NCAA Tournament run
  • John Gillon was a man on fire last night
  • Chris Elmore’s potential offensive fit, and running changes in 2017
  • All about late addition Mykelti Williams
  • Want more beer? Follow John (and Dan) on Untappd!

First Football 'Select-a-Seat' Event is Saturday (cuse.com)

Looking for the best seat in the house to watch Orange football?

Find your answer and secure your 2017 season tickets at Syracuse's first "Select-a-Seat" event of the New Year Saturday, Feb. 4 in the Carrier Dome. After you pick where you sit for football, stay and support the Orange men's basketball team for its noon ACC clash with No. 9 Virginia.

Beginning at 10 a.m., fans are invited to test drive the view from marked sections of the Dome until the conclusion of the basketball game. Once fans have made their selections, they can make their purchases from ticket representatives stationed in Section 243 on the concourse between Gates N and P, or in the backcourt area by Section 119. New season tickets will also be on sale at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B).

The first 50 fans to purchase tickets Saturday will receive a free mini football signed by Orange head coach Dino Babers. The first 100 to buy receive a complimentary Syracuse football t-shirt.

Orange Director of Athletics John Wildhack will be in the backcourt to greet fans from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Members of the football team will be there as well, signing autographs.

Syracuse's 2017 football schedule features seven home dates, including ACC matchups with Pittsburgh (Oct. 7), Clemson (Oct. 13), Wake Forest (Nov. 11) and Boston College (Nov. 25).

Season tickets are on sale now online and by phone (888-DOME-TIX). They start for as little as $125, a savings of more than 15 percent compared to single-game prices.

House of the Week: Former Syracuse football coach Scott Shafer's Fayetteville home (PS; Pucci)

The thing Missy Shafer will miss most about her Fayetteville home isn't even the home itself.

It's the backyard. The giant salt water pool where her husband, former Syracuse University football coach Scott Shafer, hosted a Memorial Day barbecue for about 15 of his players. The custom-made pergola cut from a hemlock tree from along Salt Springs Road. The cozy nook along the stone wall where the coach enjoyed smoking a cigar.

The mounted TV, outdoor stone kitchen and large stone patio make the backyard ideal for hosting parties. At the same time, the stone gas-powered fire pit provides the right setting for quiet evenings.

"It's truly a private oasis," Missy Shafer said.

Scott Shafer played Division I college football, but he was also recruited out of high school as a Division I basketball player, his wife said. He's been known to challenge his players to a game of 1-on-1 at the driveway basketball hoop.

The Shafers bought the hoop more than 10 years ago, while Scott was the defensive coordinator at Western Michigan University. When he took over as defensive coordinator at Stanford, the hoop came with him. When Scott returned to Michigan to be the defensive coordinator for the University of Michigan, the hoop returned as well.

But the hoop will stay in Syracuse, as will an adjacent 0.60-acre plot of land the Shafers purchased in 2012.

Always nice how they fire coaches right after signing day.
