Welcome to World Water Day!

March 22nd is World Water Day - a day to pause and acknowledge the global water crisis, then take a step to act.

Of the millions of people without safe water, most live in rural, hard-to-reach places. People like Qasim and his family, who live in a parched, remote village in Southern Ethiopia. Safe water is hard to access here--there are only so many natural springs, and hand-dug wells simply can’t go deep enough.

We want to bring safe water and the good news of Jesus to Qasim. But to do that, we need to go deeper than ever before. Help us fund the first-ever Lifewater drill rig to serve more than 100,000 people in Bensa and West Arsi, Ethiopia--people who will otherwise not have reliable access to clean water in their community.

Syracuse starts spring ball; QB Eric Dungey healthy again (washingtonpost.com; Kekis; AP)

Syracuse is back on the field after a snowy end to winter, and coach Dino Babers has it a little bit easier the second time around.

“The main thing is basically that everybody knows what they’re doing,” Babers said Monday. “I really appreciate the speed that practice went at today.”

Babers also appreciated the fact that starting quarterback Eric Dungey is healthy again and back in the lineup.

“He’s just a leader,” Babers said. “He’s a lot more confident. Obviously, his head is fine. He’s out there and he’s leading our football team. We’re always better when Eric is on the field.”

Dungey was ecstatic to be back and hopeful that his junior year will be injury-free. He was knocked out in the first quarter at eventual national champion Clemson last November after a hard hit to the head/shoulder area by linebacker Dorian O’Daniel. Dungey, who was leading the Atlantic Coast Conference in passing yards and completions per game, was ruled out of the game by the Orange training staff and never took another snap. He ended up missing the final three games of the season after undergoing tests. Results of those tests were kept confidential .

Dungey, listed at 6-foot-3 and 221 pounds this spring, also missed four games in 2015, suffering at least one concussion from a vicious hit early in the season against Central Michigan.

Syracuse Football opens Spring Practice (cnyvcentral.com; Tamurian)

2017 Syracuse Football is officially underway.

Sure, the season opener is just shy of six months away and fall practice a month sooner than that but the foundation for the team will be laid over the next month.

Much to the delight of fans across Central New York, the rock of that foundation was under center on day one and looks great.

Eric Dungey, for the second season in a row, looks noticeably more built. The roster on Cuse.com reports he's 223 lbs, up from 207 in 2016.

Crucial news considering that Dungey missed four games for the second season in a row after a nasty hit from eventual national champ Clemson ended his season.

"He's just a leader" Head Coach Dino Babers said after practice.

"He's a lot more confident this year, obviously his head is just fine and he's leading our football team out there. We're always better when Eric Dungey's on the field" Babers added.

The Orange will hold 15 practices, including the annual Spring Showcase over the next month. The Spring Showcase is at 10:00 a.m. on April 22.

NFL Draft 2017: WR Amba Etta-Tawo compared to Chris Conley (arrowheadaddict.com; Conner)

The Kansas City Chiefs were among the many teams checking in on Syracuse football’s pro day, where they watched wide receiver Amba Etta-Tawo among other prospects.
The Kansas City Chiefs already have one young, speedy, physical receiver on the roster in Chris Conley. They might be interested in another. Amba Etta-Tawo is a one-year Syracuse product after transferring from Maryland, but he made a significant impact in that single season with 94 catches for 1,482 yards and 14 touchdowns.

Just a few of the @NFL teams attending #CuseProDay.

The knock on Etta-Tawo is that he’s largely a one-year wonder which raises red flags many times that the player might not be set for long-term success, rather more of a product of a system’s scheme and emphasis. That definitely applies in Etta-Tawo’s case for some scouts, but the raw physical tools are most certainly in place and could intrigue the right team with a later pick if they can project him to be productive down the road.

Etta-Tawo’s NFL.com profile compares him to Chris Conley, an interesting choice considering that Conley proved himself to be a great physical specimen at the Combine who suffered from playing in Georgia’s run-heavy attack. Conley never had the standout stats that Etta-Tawo produced, with a career-high of only 657 receiving yards during his senior season.

Virginia Tech's Justin Fuente more concerned about receiver than QB this spring

Virginia Tech opens spring practice today. We talked with head coach Justin Fuente about the team’s approach to Year 2 in his system after winning the Coastal Division in Year 1.

Q. How much more comfortable do things feel this spring? On one hand, you’ve got a year under your belt here. On the other, there’s a lot of turnover in personnel, particularly on offense.

A. It’s some of all those things. We have a better feel of what we’re doing and what practice should look like. But obviously offensively we’ll have some new guys out there taking reps that haven’t played much. But we go back to square one on both sides of the ball anyway. It’s just usually my experience that the guys with more experience accelerate through the first five days of installation pretty quickly. For some of our players, it’s the first day. For our coaches and some of our players, it’s pretty comfortable.

Good move getting Arkeilpane on the staff. With his vast experience running college athletic departments, he can help advise Wildhack on things John might not be familiar with.

And as a former SU football player, at the least, he has ins with other SU football players, many of whom hit it big in the business world and are possible donors for the football program. Couple that with his fund raising expertise and he should be a very valuable resource for the department.
