Welcome to Chinese Language Day!

As the world’s most widely spoken language it seems appropriate that Mandarin Chinese has one day every year dedicated to it. This officially marked day of Mandarin language celebration was established by the United Nations as a way of celebrating the language’s history and overall contribution to the world. It is hoped that by having one day every year to celebrate Mandarin Chinese this additional focus on the language will encourage more people around the world to take it up. With China likely to become the largest economy in the world it is important that the wider world becomes interestingly more proficient in this wonderful language. Chinese Language Day is annually celebrated in April. A great way to get involved in the celebration is to join a Mandarin class or attend one of the many Confucian Hubs now established by China in countries around the world.

祝你有美好的一天

Which State Is Syracuse Football Amping Up Recruiting In? | Orange Fizz - Free Syracuse Recruiting News, Always Looking at the Future of the Orange (orangefizz.net';Aki)

Tyrone Sampson’s verbal commitment to the Orange certainly makes the Dino Babers era feel different. SU isn’t used to getting high profile prospects in recent memory, but Babers addition of Sampson, as well as Class of 2017 quarterback Tommy DeVito, proves that the second year head coach has some pull across the recruiting landscape. Babers has done this by targeting areas that previously have been unchartered territory. We’ve seen the Orange recently dip its toe in the international pool by targeting a handful of Canadian players, but in the States, Babers has been recruiting hard in Michigan.

Before Babers’ arrival, the Orange had just three players from the Great Lake State on its roster, but since Babers has arrived, he’s already added five, and you can make a case for six if you count Eric Coley who spent the bulk of his high school career at Portage Northern High School in Michigan. That exceeds the Oranges entire haul of Michigan native recruits since 2003. One of the main breeding grounds for talent is coming out of Cass Tech High School which has produced a top two player in the state every year since 2012, with those players attending elite football programs like Michigan, Ohio State and Notre Dame. Starting next year, Syracuse will have two players from Cass Tech on its roster, most notably freshman-to-be defensive end Zach Morton.

While Michigan may not be looked at as a football powerhouse state, it’s one that is on the rise. Some of its recent NFL products are Kirk Cousins, Antonio Gates and Allen Robinson. Along with that, the University of Michigan owns eight of the state’s top ten Class of 2017 recruits. While it’s very common to recruit in house, we are talking about a Jim Harbaugh-led Wolverines program that can have its pick at any player in the country. Harbaugh also knows that he needs the country’s elite talent in order to uphold the Michigan standard.

Syracuse agency member says tax deal for Armory Square hotel a bad idea (PS; Moriarty)

The vice chair of the Syracuse Industrial Development Agency says she plans to vote against nearly $3 million in tax breaks for a proposed 110-room Hampton Inn hotel in Armory Square.

"I don't think we need another hotel," M. Catherine Richardson told syracuse.com after a meeting of the agency Tuesday. "It's not serving any of the special purposes that we look for. It's not a bad building that needs to be restored. It's not a horrible neighborhood that needs an anchor to make it look better."

During the meeting, Richardson said she intended to vote against the tax breaks being sought by 231 Walton LLC, of Pittsford, an entity created by Baywood Hotels Inc.

However, she and the two other agency members at the meeting agreed to postpone a vote until next month because no one from Baywood was present to answer questions about the project. Baywood representatives were expected to attend Tuesday's meeting.

Richardson said she believes the city has enough hotel rooms, with the addition of several new hotels in recent years. Among the new hotels are a 102-room Courtyard by Marriott and a 78-room Residence Inn by Marriott just a block away from the proposed Hampton Inn in Armory Square.

The two Marriotts opened in 2013 with a generous tax deal from the industrial development agency. Under the deal, which was first approved in 2008 and then reapproved in 2011, the hotels are receiving a full exemption from property taxes for 15 years, followed by a three-year phase-out of the exemption.
