Welcome to Geek Pride Day!

Geek Pride Day is an initiative to promote geek culture, celebrated annually on May 25.[1]

The initiative originated in Spain in 2006 as (Spanish: Día del orgullo friki) and spread around the world via the Internet.

Origins
Tim McEachern organized unconnected events called Geek Pride Festival and/or Geek Pride Day 1998 to 2000 at a bar in Albany, New York, which are sometimes seen as a prelude to Geek Pride Day.

In 2006, the Spanish blogger Germán Martínez known online as señor Buebo organized the first celebration, the day was celebrated for the first time in Spain and on the Internet, drawing attention from mainstream media.[2][3][4] The biggest concentration took place in Madrid, where 300 Geeks demonstrated their pride together with a human Pac-Man. A manifesto was created to celebrate the first Geek Pride Day, which included a list of the basic rights and responsibilities of geeks.[5]

In a sign of respect for Dino Babers' prolific offense and Syracuse's slow progress bringing in ACC-level players, the SU football team placed a program-best five players on Athlon's All-ACC preseason teams for 2017.

It's the most players Syracuse has had on Athlon's All-ACC preseason teams since joining the conference in 2013.

Syracuse quarterback Eric Dungey and wide receiver Erv Philips were named Third Team, along with SU linebacker Zaire Franklin. Punter Sterling Hofrichter earned the highest preseason accolades and was named to the First Team. He is only the second SU player to be listed that high by Athlon, joining running back Jerome Smith. Wide receiver Steve Ishmael was named Fourth Team.

It's the first time that Syracuse had had its quarterback represented on the list, and the second consecutive year that Franklin and Ishmael have been included on Athlon's list.

Syracuse tied for 11th among the 14 schools in number of players represented on the lists. The Orange had more than Boston College and Virginia (4 each), while tying Georgia Tech with five.

Three-star Class of 2018 running back Jawhar Jordan announced on Twitter that he'd verbally committed to Syracuse on Wednesday night.

Jordan, who plays for Chandler (Ariz.) Hamilton High School had offers from Arizona, Oklahoma State, Iowa State and a number of other schools, according to a variety of recruiting website.

Jordan is ranked as a three-star player by recruiting websites Scout, Rivals and 247 Sports. Scout ranks Jordan as the No. 33 running back in the country, while 247 Sports' composite rankings puts Jordan as the No. 74 running back in the country. He is listed at 5-foot-10 and 160 pounds.

Jordan is the second three-star running back committed to Syracuse in the Class of 2018, joining Florida's Akeem Dixon. The pair should help shore up the future of a unit that struggled last year for the Orange.

Despite a productive passing offense, Syracuse averaged just 3.2 yards per carry in 2016. Dontae Strickland was SU's most prolific ground option, averaging 47.17 yards per game. Showing improvement in that area is a goal that's been put forth by both head coach Dino Babers and athletic director John Wildhack.

“I’m from New York, so nothing like playing where it all began,” Jordan said to Sports360AZ.com. “I really like the coaches, I feel like we have a really good connection. I feel like [head] Coach [Dino] Babers has something special planned and it’s coming soon.”

The Husky running back is coming off a 1,269 yard junior season where he scored 18 touchdowns and averaged 7.3 yards per carry and 9.6 yards per reception. He burst onto the scene as a sophomore with seven touchdowns in eight games and a freshman season where he scored 30 touchdowns.

Boston College has gotten off to a fast start this spring in recruiting, picking up nine pledges heading into the all-important June camp season. The Eagles rank 35th nationally, and seventh in the ACC, in 247Sports’ composite team rankings.

BC’s biggest pickup so far — figuratively and literally — is in-state offensive lineman Finn Dirstine. Dirstine is a consensus top-400 prospect who also had an offer from Syracuse.

The 6-5, 320-pound Dirstine is one of three players the Eagles have added from Lawrence Academy in nearby Groton, Mass. The others are tight end Joey Luchetti and defensive tackle Ryan Betro.

Recruiting services are higher on Dirstine than they are on Luchetti or Betro. However, the latter two bring stability and an important local anchor to BC’s 2018 class.

Evan Stewart’s early-May commitment thrilled Boston College’s coaching staff. The 6-1, 190-pound Stewart helped lead St. Joseph Regional in Montvale, N.J., to a state championship in 2016. Among ACC schools, Stewart pick the Eagles over UNC, NC State, Pitt, Syracuse, Louisville and Virginia.

BC can use Stewart in a variety of ways. He projects as a college safety, but he can also contribute on special teams.

Boston College has already locked in a pair of 2018 quarterbacks: Johnny Langan and Matt Valecce.

Langan threw for nearly 2,000 yards and 19 touchdowns his junior season at Bergen Catholic in Oradell, N.J. A converted wide receiver, the 6-3, 200-pound Langan added eight rushing touchdowns the past two seasons. His high school coach, Nunzio Campanile, is the brother of Eagles defensive backs coach Anthony Campanile.

Per BC Interruption, Valecce threw for over 2,700 yards and 27 touchdowns in 2016, with just seven interceptions. The 6-5 Valecce is a pro-style gunslinger.

A Florida company is considering the closed LaFayette Hills Golf & Country Club for a factory that would make electricity-generating glass.

Arthur Marino Jr., manager of Saf-Glas LLC, of Riviera Beach, Fla., said the company is looking at the country club at 4480 LaFayette Road for an 80,000- to 100,000-square-foot manufacturing facility, headquarters, and research and development center.

The company, which also makes disaster resistant and security glass products, also is considering sites in two other states, but the LaFayette property is its first choice, he said.

According to its website, the company has developed a completely transparent, distortion-free glass infused with "nano-particles." The particles redirect components of the light spectrum to the edge of the glass while letting most of the spectrum through. Marino said circuitry hidden in the frame around the glass generates electricity that can lower a building's energy cost by 25 percent to 40 percent.

The glass can generate electricity from sunlight, diffused and ambient light and even light reflected from the ground, according to the company. Marino said batteries can store some of the power for use at night.

He said the product has applications for commercial and residential buildings, as well as vehicles and ships.
