Welcome to Flag Day!

Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, which took place on June 14, 1777. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson made a proclamation establishing June 14th as Flag Day. In August 1949, National Flag Day was established by an act of Congress, which was signed by Harry Truman. However, Flag Day is not an official federal holiday. Before the government recognized Flag Day, citizens had been celebrating it and working to bring it to prominence for many years. Bernard J. Cigrand, a schoolteacher from Waubeka, Wisconsin, held the first formal observance of “Flag Day”, or “Flag Birthday”, at Stony Hill School in 1885. Cigrand continued to advocate for Flag Day and became the president of the American Flag Day Association and the National Flag Day Society. Cigrand is usually described as the “Father of Flag Day”. On June 14, 1894, over 300,000 public school students celebrated Flag Day in parks across Chicago. In the 1890's, observances took place in other cities such as New York City and Philadelphia. Currently, the week of June 14th is known as “National Flag Week”, and the president makes a proclamation urging people to fly flags for its duration. Flags are flown on government buildings as well.

Former Syracuse football player Ashton Broyld trying out for Jacksonville Jaguars (PS; Bailey)

Former Syracuse football player Ashton Broyld is trying out for the Jacksonville Jaguars this week during the team's mandatory veteran minicamp.

Broyld, who also took part in a rookie minicamp for the Jaguars, is still pursuing his NFL dreams after being dismissed from SU two years ago and having a quiet final collegiate season at West Georgia. In three seasons with the Orange, he worked at quarterback, running back, wide receiver and hybrid back, amassing 852 combined rushing and receiving yards, as well as one touchdown.

The versatile athlete and former Rush-Henrietta (N.Y.) Senior High School star quarterback was enrolled at SU this year and working toward finishing his degree. He's competing in Jacksonville at tight end.

Broyld's opportunity with the Jaguars likely stems from his close connection to the coaching staff. Head coach Doug Marrone, offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett and running backs coach Tyrone Wheatley all overlapped with Broyld at Syracuse.

Former SU wide receiver Amba Etta-Tawo is also in Jacksonville after being signed as an undrafted free agent.

Antwan Cordy — Meet the 2017 Syracuse Football team - The Juice Online (the juice; Cheng)

Antwan Cordy waited more half a year for the moment.

Midway through Syracuse’s annual spring game in April, the redshirt junior safety jumped a route and intercepted a pass thrown by second-string quarterback Zach Mahoney. He took it all the way back for the only score of the first half in what was a game dominated by defense.

“Getting back the dome, having great plays, being physical,” Cordy said, “it felt great to be out there with my team.”

Indeed, it was the first time that Cordy was with his teammates since week two of the 2016 season when Cordy broke his forearm trying to make an endzone tackle against Louisville. Cordy was forced to watch from the sideline for the remaining 10 games as the SU defense surrendered 38.6 points per game, ranking a ghastly 120th in the country.

The struggles on defense were mostly expected from a team that was transitioning from Scott Shafer’s aggressive, blitzing defense to new defensive coordinator Brian Ward’s Tampa-2 scheme.

But the injuries didn’t help.

Top 50 teams in 2017: No. 48, Syracuse (news-gazette.com; Asmussen)

Our preseason countdown continues ...

No. 48: Syracuse

Coach: Dino Babers
2016 record: 4-8
Projected 2017 record: 8-4
Circle the date: Nov. 4 at Florida State
Bowl trip: Quick Lane

Why No. 48: In Babers we trust. The former Eastern Illinois coach didn't get to a bowl in his first season, but he did a major overhaul to the Orange offense. No more vanilla. Syracuse plans to throw the ball all over the field, which will be easier with a healthy Eric Dungey at quarterback. The junior has all sorts of help. No team in the country has more returning starters than the 20 that will play for Babers. Ervin Phillips is coming off a 90-catch season and will be Dungey's favorite target. The nonconference schedule is reasonable, other than a trip to LSU. The Orange get Clemson at home, but have consecutive road games at Miami and Florida State late in the season.

Last year's ranking: N/A

Previous rankings: No. 50, Western Kentucky, No. 49 Vanderbilt

Preview 2017: ACC Quarterback Ranking & Situation (collegfootballnews.com; Fiutak)

Going into the summer, what’s the quarterback situation and ranking for every ACC team?

Not everyone quarterback situation is settled, but where does each ACC team stand at the most important position? The ranking is based on the entire quarterback situation.

ACC
14. Boston College
Patrick Towles is gone after a shaky season, but Darius Wade is a decent backup option who saw little time. The dual-threat junior has to fight off Anthony Brown, a great-looking 6-1, 210-passwer who can move.

And the starter will be … Anthony Brown, RFr.
Boston College 2017 Preview

13. Duke
Everything changed after Thomas Sirk announced he was transferring. He’d have been the backup anyway, but now there’s no question that this is Daniel Jones’ offense. He stepped in and threw for over 2,800 yards and 16 scores with 486 rushing yards and seven touchdowns.

And the starter will be … Daniel Jones, Soph.
Duke 2017 Preview

12. Wake Forest
John Wolford had an okay season as a part of the overall puzzle, but he threw just nine touchdown passes with ten picks. However, he took off for 521 yards and six scores. Kendall Hinton was the starter before suffering a knee injury. He’s the starter, but Wolford is No. 1A.

And the starter will be … Kendal Hinton, Jr.

Uncommon places to watch films in Syracuse this summer (PS; Muoio)

Do you enjoy watching movies in the summer, but are bored of going to a normal movie theater? Are you more interested in watching films in a different setting? Here are places throughout Syracuse hosting movies this summer different from the typical movie theater.

Syracuse Contemporary Irish Film Festival

Syracuse's first-ever Irish Film Festival will take place from June 22-24 at the Everson Museum of Art.

The three-day festival takes place in June because it best with their community partner ACR Health, Micha Crook said.

June 22 will feature "Queen of Ireland", which is the film's big screen premiere in Syracuse. There will also be an opening night raffle to benefit ACR Health and The Q Center.

The June 23's feature film will be "A Date for Mad Mary". This film has yet to appear anywhere in the United States. It is really cool to be able to premiere the movie first in Syracuse, Crook said.

On June 24, there will be five short films in the afternoon. Short films are a great way for Irish producers and directors to get experience, Crook said. These films will be both in English and Irish with English subtitles.
