National-Moon-Day-July-20-e1468264038681.jpg

Welcome to Moon Day!

National Moon Day is observed annually on July 20 and commemorates the day man first walked on the moon in 1969. NASA reported the moon landing as being “…the single greatest technological achievement of all time.”

On July 20, 1969, Apollo 11 landed the first humans, Americans Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, on the moon. Armstrong stepped first onto the lunar surface, six hours after landing and spent two and a half hours outside the spacecraft. Aldrin spent slightly less time but together they collected 47.5 pounds of lunar material to bring back to Earth. Michael Collins piloted Apollo 11 and remained alone in orbit until Armstrong and Aldrin returned.

Watched by millions, the event was broadcast on live TV to a world-wide audience and all witnessed as Armstrong stepped onto the lunar surface and described the event as “one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind.”

Syracuse football quarterback Eric Dungey named to Davey O'Brien Award Watch List (PS; Bailey)

Syracuse football quarterback Eric Dungey was named to the Davey O'Brien Award Watch List on Wednesday. The honor is given annually to the nation's best quarterback.

Dungey, a junior, is one of 30 signal-callers on the initial listing. He was also included on the preseason watch list for the Maxwell Award, which goes to college football's top player regardless of position.

In two seasons as the Orange's starting quarterback, Dungey has thrown for 3,977 yards and 26 touchdowns. He set school records for passing yards (2,679) and yards of total offense (2,972) last year, thriving in the hurry-up, spread system installed by head coach Dino Babers.

Dungey, who hasn't finished either of the last two campaigns due to apparent head injuries, bulked up this offseason in anticipation of his third collegiate season.

Syracuse begins its preseason camp in less than two weeks and opens its 2017 season against Central Connecticut State in the Carrier Dome on Sept. 1.

2017 Could Be A Coming Out Party For OITNF (Syracuse Football) (itlh.com; Edsen Sr)

Will 2017 be a coming out party for Orange is the New Fast? Here are some thoughts on the upcoming Syracuse football campaign.

Now that I have you pumped up for the upcoming season, let us take a step back and look at the upcoming season. Last year probably went as most national swami’s thought it would. “Syracuse is a basketball fish swimming in a large football pond”, “Until Jim Brown suits up again the Orange will be basement dwellers in the ACC” are a few of the quotes that I heard tossed around.

On the flip side, as someone that bleeds Orange I saw last season a different way. Yes we went 4-8 on the year but at least three of those games could have gone either way; but recognize a few important facts.

  • Eric Dungey the Orange Heisman hopeful #Dungey4Hesiman did not play in the last 3 ¾ games, being knocked out early in the first quarter against Clemson;
  • Dino Babers, as I have said before, is still cooking with someone else’s groceries. We are getting closer to a fully Babers recruited team but we are not there yet.
Speaking of Dino’s shopping cart, the Orange recruiting class ranked 10th out of the 14 ACC teams
according to both At their request, this network is being blocked from this site. and . This is not setting the world on fire but the class was ranked ahead of Boston College, Georgia Tech, Wake Forest and Virginia. Three of those four had significantly better records than the ‘Cuse last year (9-4, 7-6, 7-6) so there is a glimmer of hope.

2017 All-ACC Preseason Football Team Announced | News (theacc.com)

Defending national champion Clemson leads all schools with five selections to the 2017 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Preseason Football Team announced on Wednesday.

The team was selected by a vote of 167 media members that were credentialed for last week’s ACC Football Kickoff in Charlotte.

The Tigers’ defensive tackle tandem of Christian Wilkins and Dexter Lawrence were both selected, along with the Clemson offensive trio of wide receiver Deon Cain, tackle Mitch Hyatt and guard Tyrone Crowder.

Miami, which was predicted to place first in the Coastal Division in the media preseason poll announced earlier this week, placed four players on the All-ACC preseason team. Preseason ACC favorite Florida State, defending Coastal Division champion Virginia Tech and NC State each had three players selected.

Eleven of the league’s 14 football programs placed at least one player on the 2017 All-ACC Preseason Team.

Reigning Heisman Trophy winner Lamar Jackson of Louisville was chosen to repeat as ACC Player of the Year after a record-setting 2016 campaign in which he averaged 393.4 yards per game of total offense and accounted for 51 touchdowns, both ACC single-season records. His 1,571 rushing yards and 21 rushing touchdowns were also ACC records for a quarterback.

Sophomore surge: Second-year ACC football coaches look for gains (augustafreepress.com; Graham)

No excuses now, right? You know the league, by and large. Florida State and Clemson play for national titles. Georgia Tech runs the option. Everybody has linebackers and safeties flying all over the field, speed at wideout, depth at running back, quarterbacks putting up video-game numbers.

And perhaps most importantly, you know what you have, and your guys know your program.

“For all of us that are taking on new programs, I think we relish the chance where we can from the sideline in practice or a game say where this is going to be good. I think that’s what any great teacher and anyone that cares about young people, that’s what we want,” Mendenhall told reporters at last week’s ACC Kickoff.

Syracuse coach Dino Babers is headed toward his third Year 2. At Eastern Illinois, his second team, in 2013, went 12-2, after a 7-5 year in 2012. His second Bowling Green team was 10-3 in 2015, after an 8-6 Year 1 in 2014.

Babers thinks he has the precise moment that things will click for his team nailed down: Year 2, Game 4.

(Which means: watch out, LSU, which hosts the Orange on Sept. 23.)

“Second year, Game 4, everywhere I’ve been – this is my third stop – that’s when the lightbulbs go on,” Babers said. “I don’t know why. It’s somewhere around there, plus or minus two. But somewhere in the second year, somewhere around the middle of the season, they get it. What it is, I don’t know, but that normally is what happens, and the team and everything starts to change.

“I’m all for that thing happening this year, second year, somewhere around Game 4,” Babers said.

Mendenhall thinks the Year 2, Game 4 pinpoint may be a bit too specific, but he does agree generally with the notion that “there will come a time for every program and every new coach that has a real impact on his players where there is a moment where you recognize it.”
